Anthem Tour 2022: Brighton Concorde 2 Review by Scene Sussex

October 13th, 2022

Toyah live Brighton, Support Currls
7 October 2022, Concorde 2.

Toyah brings Anthem to Brighton. Gig Report!

Toyah: Toyah Is a four times Brit Award nominated English musician, singer, songwriter, actress, producer and author. In a career spanning more than 40 years, Willcox has had 8 Top 40 singles, released over 20 albums, written two books, appeared in over 40 stage plays and 10 feature films, and voiced and presented numerous television shows.

As a singer, actress and TV presenter, Toyah is in a world beating class of her own, she is, in the words of ABBA, a super trouper. If you dont belive me, sit down with a coffee and have a run through her history on her Wikipedia page! Extraordinary.

Toyah: The Band: The last time I was lucky to photograph Toyah was when she visited Worthing to warm up her album ‘Posh Pop’. This LP put Toyah back in the Top 30 for the first time since 1984. The time before that was Brighton in November 2019 when she played chalk to promote her 2019 charting album ‘In The Court Of The Crimson Queen‘. A new line up of new faces apart from Mike Nichols (bass). Two guitars, drums, bass and keys and Toyah, gave us a full on auditory explosion of sound. This is a classy five-piece band, working with Toyah they helped make the evening snappy and definitely uplifting.

Bordon Herald: Electric Ladies Tour

May 21st, 2022

Toyah, Lene Lovich and Saffron of Republica help Hazel O’Connor

The Electric Ladies tour by Toyah, Lene Lovich and Saffron of Republica in support of Hazel O’Connor is coming to The Anvil in Basingstoke on June 16 at 7.45pm.

Hazel is still recovering from suffering a bleed on the brain and is unable to join the tour, but she will be very much with the others in spirit. Her singing and acting career took off in 1980 when she played Kate in the film Breaking Glass while also writing and performing its soundtrack album. This produced hits including Will You, the tale of a woman who nervously edges towards spending the night with her new man for the first time.

Toyah Willcox is one of the most recognisable faces in UK pop culture, clocking up an impressive ten hit singles and eight hit albums, including a gold-selling anthem, and her recent hit album, Posh Pop. Her biggest hits include It’s A Mystery, Thunder in the Mountains and I Want To Be Free.

She will be joined on this tour by new wave pioneer Lene Lovich, whose hits in the late 1970s included Lucky Number and I Think We’re Alone Now, and 1990s indie rock chick Saffron from Republica, whose hits included Ready To Go.

Performing alongside their full band, each artist will perform their own set alongside some collaborations. Some of Hazel’s songs will also be performed, and a portion of the income from each show will go directly towards helping her with her ongoing recovery. For tickets, priced £32, call 01256 844244 or visit anvilarts.org.uk

The News: Princess Of Punk Gone All Posh Pop

February 2nd, 2022

No mystery why Princess of Punk gone all Posh Pop

Once known as the Punk Princess, Toyah has proved she has proved she is no one-trick pony.

She is an actor of note, featuring in films such as Jubilee, Quadrophenia and recent The Ghosts Of Borley Rectory, as well as TV shows such as Shoestring, Minder, Kavanagh QC and Maigret.

She has supplied her voice to animated Mr Bean series and Teletubbies and has “done” Shakespeare’s The Tempest, writes Martin Hutchinson.

But to most of us, she is a singer who took the charts by storm when she first erupted on the scene in 1980. After five releases that failed to interest the mainstream chart, despite going top ten in independent charts, Four From Toyah EP –that included the fantastic It’s A Mystery – reached number four in mainstream UK singles’ charts and was the first of four consecutive releases to top UK independent charts.

She followed her breakthrough with I Want To Be Free and another release Thunder In The Mountains, both of which were top ten hits, before follow-up EP Four More From Toyah.

Toyah has also had ten chart albums, including 1981’s Anthem, which got to number two in the charts.

Charles Hutch Press: Posh Pop Queen Toyah In Pocklington

January 26th, 2022

Sunday Lunch video star and Posh Pop queen Toyah to play Pocklington in March

Eighties’ pop star Toyah will play Pocklington Arts Centre on March 3 on her up-close-and-personal Posh Pop Tour.

Her “lively cinematic sound” will combine Toyah’s vocals with keyboards and stand-up bass in her arrangements of such hits as It’s A Mystery, Thunder In The Mountains and I Want To Be Free, modern-day works Sensational and Dance In The Hurricane and selections from last autumn’s Posh Pop album.

These will be complemented by stories from her colourful 40-year career that has gained YouTube momentum latterly with Toyah’s Sunday Lunch videos with husband Robert Fripp, drawing ten million views since being started in lockdown. A new season was launched last weekend with their quickfire take on The Undertones’ Teenage Kicks.

Toyah: Posh Pop Tour, Pocklington Arts Centre, Thursday, March 3, 8pm. Box office: 01759 301547 or at pocklkingtonartscentre.co.uk.

Ahead of her Pocklington show, Martin Hutchinson profiles Birmingham-born singer, actor, television presenter and writer Toyah Willcox

Once known as the “Punk Princess”, Toyah has proved that she is no one-trick-pony. She is an actor of note, featuring in films such as Jubilee, Quadrophenia and Ghosts Of Borley Rectory and the TV shows Shoestring, Minder, Kavanagh QC and Maigret.

She supplied her voice to the animated Mr Bean series and Teletubbies and has ‘done’ Shakespeare, playing Miranda in Derek Jarman’s 1979 film version of The Tempest.

To most of us, however, Toyah is a singer, who took the charts by storm when she first erupted on the scene in 1980. After five releases that failed to interest the mainstream Top 40, despite going top ten in the independent charts, Toyah broke through with the Four From Toyah EP, featuring the fantastic It’s A Mystery that propelled it to number four.

Retro Pop: Toyah Scores Highest Solo Album Placement

September 5th, 2021

Toyah scores highest solo album placement with ‘Posh Pop’

The ’80s icon has teased plans to tour the album across the UK, Europe and the US.

‘Posh Pop’ is Toyah’s best charting album of her solo career. The singer’s 16th LP, featuring the singles Levitate, Zoom Zoom and Summer of Love, debuted at No. 22 on the UK chart, beating her solo debut ‘Minx’, which peaked at 24.

It’s beaten only by ‘Anthem’ and ‘The Changeling’, both of which were released by the singer’s eponymous new wave band, of which she was frontwoman. ‘Anthem’ was a UK No. 2 hit, while ‘The Changeling’ reached No. 6. The live album “Warrior Rock’ also hit No. 20.

Posh Pop: Toyah’s Highest Charting Studio Album Since 1982!!

September 3rd, 2021

This is incredible news, and a huge congratulations to Toyah. As well as Simon Darlow, Bobby Willcox and the entire team who brought us Posh Pop.

The 2021 studio album charts today at #22 on the Official UK Album Chart. Posh Pop becomes Toyah’s highest charting studio album since 1982, when The Changeling peaked at #6. Warrior Rock: Toyah On Tour, a live double album – which will be reissued in the next year or so, as will the rest of Toyah’s post-The Blue Meaning Safari Records’ back catalogue – peaked at #20 that same year.

The only other Toyah albums to peak higher than this are Anthem (1981) #2, The Changeling (1982) #6 and the aforementioned Warrior Rock: Toyah On Tour (1982) #20. Posh Pop equals with, another live album, Toyah! Toyah! Toyah! (1980) which hit #22 in early 1981.

Further great news is that Posh Pop achieves Toyah her highest ever chart position as a solo artist, and the album is also #1 on the official Independent chart, #6 on the official Physical chart, #6 on the official Sales chart, #9 on the official Vinyl chart, #20 on the official Download chart and #8 on the official Scottish chart. Phew! Amazing stats! If the Album Chart was, as it used to be, simply a sales chart Toyah would certainly have a Top 10 album!!

Anthem Deluxe/Remastered: Review by Goldmine

September 22nd, 2022

Toyah’s ‘Anthem’ gets the super deluxe treatment, and never sounded so good!

It’s a mystery why Toyah was never eternally enormous. But the thunder in the mountains has never sounded so good.

Toyah / Anthem
Cherry Red (3-CD, 1 DVD, 2-LPs, 1-45rpm Box Set)

This is it – the big one, both in commercial terms and, compared to previous releases in Toyah’s reissue series, packaging, too.

Anthem was Ms Willcox’s fourth album, but it was home, too, to her greatest single hits yet – and if you only need one super deluxe early ’80s album, this might well be it.

Disc one here is the original album; disc three is a DVD stuffed with promos and TV appearances; discs two and four add in the outtakes, demos, remixes, backing tracks and live cuts. Including the nine bonus tracks appended to the album itself, and four more on tucked away elsewhere, there’s some 40 largely unreleased performances to get your teeth into. Plus the album on picture disc, a 12-inch mini album and a four track 7-inch EP. Which can, if you wish, be slimmed down to a simple 2CD + DVD package, or reduced even further to a gold colored LP of Anthem alone. In every guise, Anthem shines brightly.

The most confident sounding of Toyah’s early albums, if not the most unexpected (that remains her debut), Anthem was the sound of Toyah finally finding her direction. The songs are generally stronger than before, the band is definitely tighter, and her voice feels more controlled, without losing an iota of its original idiosyncrasy.

Clarence Hall: It Wasn’t A Mystery

February 26th, 2022

Earlier in the month, the Clarence Hall hosted the iconic music legend, Toyah Willcox, as part of her Posh Pop Tour. As promoter Jamie Richards of Woodfired Summit said: “It wasn’t a mystery why the crowd loved her. Such talent, such presence, such enthusiasm and so much energy”.

Hall Trustee David Jeremiah was in the audience, and has contributed the following perspective:

“Music defines us. I identify with R&B and Rock and Roll so, Toyah’s arrival on the “Hip Hop” “Punk” music scene in 81/82 had passed me by. Nevertheless, during lockdown, I had become hooked on “Toyah and Robert’s Sunday Lunch” – see it on YouTube. Knowing she was appearing at the Clarence Hall, I bought four tickets and persuaded Ann and two old rocker friends to come along.

The gig was a sell-out. The Hall was buzzing, and the music was loud. Without a doubt the evening was a roaring success and Toyah, admitting to never being in this part of the world before, was effusive about Crickhowell in general and the Hall in Particular.

Turn Up The Volume: Cover Of The Week

September 6th, 2023

Toyah and Robert Fripp bring us fun, hilarity and music every Sunday for more than two years now from their kitchen with covers of pop & rock classics.

It’s not that they weren’t already famous before the Covid-19 lockdown started.

Toyah and Fripp have both remarkable careers on their résume and they’re definitely not done yet, as Toyah proved crystal clear with her 2021 Posh Pop album and Robert still touring with King Crimson, his band of a lifetime.

And regularly they leave their beloved kitchen to play live together, as happened last May at the Stone Valley South Festival in Great Amwell, England where they played, as part of their set, their vivid cover of David Bowie‘s 1977 mega-hit Heroes, on which Fripp played guitar back then.

Toyah and Robert recently celebrated their 37th anniversary together, cause they’re lovers, and that is a fact, yes they’re lovers, and that is that.

Blitzed: An Interview with Toyah

September 12th, 2022

Toyah remains an iconic figure across several decades of the UK music scene. Outside of her acting career, she chalked up a series of chart hits as a musician including ‘It’s A Mystery’, ‘I Want To Be Free’ and ‘Thunder In The Mountains’.

More recently, she returned with the album Posh Pop which reached the top 25 in the UK charts. She also enjoys her regular (and popular) Sunday Lunch video shows, alongside husband Robert Fripp.

This October sees Toyah supporting Billy Idol as part of his Roadside tour. Meanwhile, Toyah’s classic 1981 album Anthem is also being reissued this September. Blitzed sat down with Toyah to discuss her busy autumn plans…

You’ve got the Billy Idol tour coming up in October, which is an interesting contrast. You’re both very different, yet at the same time you’re both seasoned travelers from that fervent 80s pop scene.

It’s great and don’t forget punk rock. Billy used to be based in London with Generation X, which is when I met him. We both have 45-year careers, are quite diverse in our individual journeys as musicians and then you’ve got Television performing Marquee Moon.

I think it’s quite a clever line up because I’m only on stage for 7:30 to 8:00 o’clock and I’ve got to fit in 28 albums and 15 hit singles. That’s quite a journey to make, but what all of us have in common on this bill is we started in punk and we’ve both, all of us, evolved into rock. I think it’s quite diverse. I’m not just an 80s icon. I’ve been pretty present, especially in the last few years. I think it’s a very clever mix I hope that I can get in some good punk rock material. Obviously the 80s material, but also the new stuff as well because Posh Pop went to No. 1 in 36 charts, 22 in the main charts on August the 27th last year and I’m certainly going to be including some Posh Pop tracks.
