Celebrating: Be Proud Be Loud (Be Heard)

April 3rd, 2022

“You give me, fire!”

This weekend has been something of an official “unofficial” celebration of one of Toyah’s most glorious pop moments.

The uplifting 1982 anthem Be Proud Be Loud (Be Heard) – written by Toyah Willcox and Joel Bogen, and originally released in August 1982 – and it’s gorgeous related imagery. With a Toyah At Home special, a retro, and incredibly rare, performance of the song from Italian music show, Popcorn, which aired on Italian TV channel Canale 5 from 1980 to 1985!

Official Toyah popped the cherry on the icing of the “Be Proud” cake by also sharing a previously unseen shot from the Be Proud Be Loud (Be Heard) beach photo session.

“Soul deep!”

Aside from all that, how ahead of the curve was Toyah? The positivity and message of Be Proud Be Loud (Be Heard) is relatable, and relevant, to right now. And the song still sounds so good, from that zoom-in intro to the very last second… (Photo © Cherry Red Records / Screen Caps from a video that is © Canale 5)

Edinburgh Evening News: Ferris Bueller & Toyah Willcox

March 29th, 2022

Liam Rudden: How can Ferris Bueller be 60 and Toyah Willcox 63 when in my head I’m still 23?

Last week, I nipped down to Carlisle to see Toyah Willcox in concert, a wee bundle of energy as always, as she revisited 40 years of hits for an hour or more I was a teenager again… until she mentioned she is now 63. Now, I don’t know about you, but in my head the icons of my youth have remained trapped in a time bubble that allows them to defy the ageing process. Consequently, it’s only when reminded of their advancing years I remember that I too am old.

Brighton News: Gig Review – Posh Pop Tour | Hastings

March 20th, 2022

Sensational Toyah Brings Her ‘Posh Pop Tour’ to East Sussex

TOYAH + HOLLY DEANNA (CURRLS) – ST MARY IN THE CASTLE, HASTINGS 12.3.22

The music scene in Hastings has steadily been getting back on its feet this year and is starting to thrive once again. Tonight’s show at St Mary In The Castle is a sure sign of a return to normality though you could hardly describe Toyah as ‘normal’.

My first encounter with Toyah may have been as a 16 year old hearing ‘Sheep Farming In Barnet’ and being most intrigued by her, or it could have been watching her playing ‘Monkey’ in ‘Quadrophenia’ around the same time, but whichever I was hooked.

I got around to seeing her in the flesh for my one and only time at Drury Lane Theatre Royal on Christmas Eve, 1981, which was actually broadcast on BBC2 as an ‘Old Grey Whistle Test’ special. I say seeing her in the flesh but my main recollection of that night is being stuck in the balcony about as far away as you could get. I then lost my return tube ticket home, but luckily the train inspector was full of Christmas cheer and allowed me through the barrier.

Tonight was my opportunity to reconnect having lost touch with her career and was surprised to find out that she has released 16 albums, of which 11 are as a solo artist. Throw in a few compilation albums and a box set, and you have quite an accomplished music career. Of course that isn’t the end of her talents as she has appeared in over 20 films, presented on television, appeared in numerous shows, and done a fair bit of charity fundraising.
