About On Record: In Conversation with Toyah Willcox
Steel Pulse bassist Amlak Tafari and broadcaster Satnam Rana present twenty-two conversations with Birmingham musicians, promoters, managers, venue owners and entrepreneurs who have all contributed to local, national, and international music culture. Join us and our special guests for conversations about their lives in music, their connections to the city, and how Birmingham has inspired or influenced them, personally and musically.

Selected dates also feature free live performances from the artists appearing On Record. The first of its kind, On Record is a multi-artist, multi-genre concept album forming a sonic love letter to the city of Birmingham. Produced as part of the Birmingham 2022 Festival, the eleven-track album will be available on a limited vinyl release and across all streaming platforms.

From her early days as a Birmingham punk to the recent internet phenomenon of Toyah and Robert’s Sunday Lunch, Toyah Wilcox has become an award-winning rock legend as well as a much-loved actress, and music composer. In this conversation we’ll dig deep into Toyah’s enduring career, what influences and drives her.

And what a career! Toyah has amassed thirteen top 40 singles, recorded twenty-five albums, written two books, appeared in over forty stage plays, acted in over twenty feature films, including Derek Jarman’s seminal punk epic, Jubilee, and presented hundreds of TV programmes in her own charismatic, outspoken, and impossible to categorise way. She released Posh Pop, her first solo studio album since 2008, in August 2021.

Produced in partnership with B:Music

Toyah & Robert: Ukraine We Hear You – Press

March 1st, 2022

Press for Toyah & Robert’s “Ukraine We Hear You” (Images © Toyah Willcox)

Classic Rock/Louder: Toyah and Robert Fripp film bonus cover version in reaction to Russian invasion: A rare serious moment in the Willcox-Fripp kitchen as the couple stand with Ukraine and perform Living Colour’s Cult Of Personality – Last than 48 hours after posting their lively cover of The Black Keys’ Lonely Boy, Toyah Willcox and Robert Fripp have filmed another cover version, and this time they’ve got their serious faces on. Giving the video the title Ukraine We Hear You, Fripp and Willcox perform Living Colour’s Cult Of Personality, presumably in “tribute” to Russian president Vladimir Putin, who ordered the invasion of Ukraine by Russian Armed Forces on February 24 – Continue reading…

Tone Deaf: Robert Fripp and Toyah release bonus cover for the Ukrainian people: Just after dropping a cover of ‘Lonely Boy’ by The Black Keys, Robert Fripp and Toyah returned with an ode to the Ukrainian people – Robert Fripp and Toyah, it’s fair to say, have been having a really fun time making their Sunday Lunch services since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. The pair have covered everyone from The Undertones to Patti Smith to The Velvet Underground – throughout each cover, Fripp happily strums his guitar while smiling pleasantly, as his partner Toyah dances loosely and wildly around him in their kitchen. It’s an endearing ritual and it clearly works for them – Continue reading…

Brooklyn Vegan: Toyah and Robert Fripp Say “Ukraine We Hear You”, Cover Living Colour’s “Cult Of Personality”: Toyah Wilcox and King Crimson’s Robert Fripp have been covering songs in their kitchen since lockdown on their saucy and very popular “Sunday Lunch” YouTube series, but they just dropped a new one in support of Ukraine. They’ve covered Living Colour’s politically minded 1988 hit “Cult of Personality,” and have done so in a more serious manner than usual, without the razzle dazzle, though Toyah does work a little clever mirror magic when she sings “Neon lights, a Nobel Prize / Then a mirror speaks, the reflection lies.” They also made a version of the flag of the President of the Ukraine that’s affixed to their kitchen cupboards, and at the end the title “Ukraine We Hear You” comes across the screen – Continue reading…

Metal Sucks: King Crimson’s Robert Fripp and Toyah Willcox Perform Solemn, Boobless Cover of Living Colour’s “Cult of Personality” In Solidarity With Ukraine: At this point, we are used to the “Sunday Lunch” videos made by King Crimson guitarist Robert Fripp and his wife, the actress and singer Toyah Willcox, being funny viral snippets that mostly involve Toyah shaking her gals on camera. But now, Fripp and Toyah have recorded a chaste and grim-faced version of Living Colour’s “Cult of Personality” as a display of solidarity with Ukraine – Continue reading…

NME: Robert Fripp and Toyah Willcox cover The Black Keys on Sunday Lunch: The pair took on ‘Lonely Boy’ from their kitchen – King Crimson founder Robert Fripp and his wife, singer Toyah Willcox, have shared a cover of The Black Keys‘ hit ‘Lonely Boy’ – check it out below. The cover is a part of the pair’s ‘Sunday Lunch’ video series which was launched in 2020. The series has so far seen the couple share renditions of songs by Ramones, Nirvana, David Bowie, Metallica, Billy Idol, The Rolling Stones, Judas Priest, The Prodigy, Guns N’ Roses, Alice Cooper and many more through Willcox’s YouTube channel – Continue reading…

Classic Rock/Louder: Watch Toyah brandish a giant clock as we revisit the UK’s most chaotic kitchen: On their latest Sunday Lunch broadcast, Robert Fripp and Toyah Willcox breathe new life into The Black Keys’ Lonely Boy – Another weekend has come and gone, and another broadcast from the Fripp-Willcox kitchen in deepest rural Worcestershire has beamed its way into the nation’s hearts. This week, coltish duo Robert Fripp and Toyah Willcox visited the back catalogue of Akron’s finest, The Black Keys, and delivered a rousing version of their 2011 smash Lonely Boy – Continue reading…

Guitar.Com: Fripp and Toyah Are Lonely Boys With New Black Keys Cover: Fripp offers some rare backing vocals – Sunday Lunch, the covers series featuring Robert Fripp and Toyah Wilcox, is back – in the kitchen for a cover this week is the Black Keys’ track Lonely Boy. The cover features some rare backing vocals from the King Crimson guitarist, while Toyah Wilcox wields the rather existential prop of a gigantic metal clock that eclipses the entire screen – Continue reading…

Consequence: Robert Fripp and Toyah Are Right on Time with The Black Keys’ “Lonely Boy”: The couple clock in with a playful take on the chart-topping rock hit – It’s more Sunday fun from King Crimson guitarist Robert Fripp and his singer wife Toyah Willcox, who deliver a very timely rendition of The Black Keys’ “Lonely Boy.” Toyah busts out a revealing white bodysuit for the couple’s take on The Black Keys’ chart-topping rock hit, as they play up the whole time aspect of the song’s lyrics. Unlike Black Keys’ singer Dan Auerbach’s complaint that he has a love who keeps him waiting, Robert and Toyah are always right on time with their “Sunday Lunch” performances — hence a giant clock prop, a hand-drawn clock poster, and a large yellow watch – Continue reading…

Brooklyn Vegan: Watch Toyah and Robert Fripp cover The Black Keys’ “Lonely Boy”: This week on their “Sunday Lunch” covers series, Toyah and King Crimson’s Robert Fripp knock out The Black Keys’ 2011 hit “Lonely Boy.” Robert offers up rare backing vocals on this one and Toyah, ever literal with her props, wields a giant clock face while the handmade poster on their cupboard reads “Fripp O’Clock.” For fans of flubs, bloopers and outtakes, this week’s video also pulls back the curtain a little – Continue reading…

Metal Sucks: King Crimson’s Robert Fripp and Toyah Willcox Cover The Black Keys’ “Lonely Boy”: King Crimson guitarist Robert Fripp and his wife, the actress and singer Toyah Willcox, are back with the latest entry in their ongoing “Sunday Lunch” series of cover videos. This Sunday, Fripp and Toyah take on the Black Keys’ “Lonely Boy.” This cover features Toyah wearing more clothing than we’re used to, though she definitely makes sure the gals are on blast – Continue reading…

Clarence Hall: It Wasn’t A Mystery

February 26th, 2022

Earlier in the month, the Clarence Hall hosted the iconic music legend, Toyah Willcox, as part of her Posh Pop Tour. As promoter Jamie Richards of Woodfired Summit said: “It wasn’t a mystery why the crowd loved her. Such talent, such presence, such enthusiasm and so much energy”.

Hall Trustee David Jeremiah was in the audience, and has contributed the following perspective:

“Music defines us. I identify with R&B and Rock and Roll so, Toyah’s arrival on the “Hip Hop” “Punk” music scene in 81/82 had passed me by. Nevertheless, during lockdown, I had become hooked on “Toyah and Robert’s Sunday Lunch” – see it on YouTube. Knowing she was appearing at the Clarence Hall, I bought four tickets and persuaded Ann and two old rocker friends to come along.

The gig was a sell-out. The Hall was buzzing, and the music was loud. Without a doubt the evening was a roaring success and Toyah, admitting to never being in this part of the world before, was effusive about Crickhowell in general and the Hall in Particular.

Rolling Stone: Robert Fripp, Toyah Willcox Cover Smashing Pumpkins’ ‘Bullet With Butterfly Wings’: The video is part of the pair’s weekly Sunday Lunch series – Robert Fripp and Toyah Willcox have been serving up their Sunday Lunch cover series on YouTube for over a year, and for their latest effort the pair has unleashed a raucous version of Smashing Pumpkins’ “Bullet With Butterfly Wings.” In the video, the King Crimson guitarist takes on guitar duties while Willcox, clad in a revealing goth top with literal butterfly wings, gives the vocals a punk rock flair. Classic Rock/Louder: Wind machines, nipple tape…must be time for Toyah & Robert Fripp’s Sunday Lunch: This week everybody’s favourite wacky couple cover The Smashing Pumpkins’ Bullet With Butterfly Wings – As we’re sure you’re all well aware by now, Sunday Lunch at the Willcox-Fripp household is about much more than mere Yorkshire puddings and roast taters. Week after week, Toyah and Robert deliver highly entertaining, kooky covers of some of rock’s biggest hits, performed for the most part, it seems, as a way of adding some spice to their relationship. If you find yourself questioning whether you should really be watching Toyah flirtatiously dance while rocking nipple tape much to her husband’s delight, don’t worry, you’ve just stumbled upon their Sunday Lunch series, which by the way, probably shouldn’t be played on your work computer – Continue reading…

Guitar.Com: Fripp and Toyah Get Their Grunge On With Cover Of Smashing Pumkins’ Bullet With Butterfly Wings: “Bullet With Butterfly Wings as you’ve never seen or heard it before.” – Robert Fripp and Toyah Wilcox’s Sunday Lunch covers series is back: on the table this week, a take on Smashing Pumpkins’ Bullet With Butterfly Wings. Last week, the pair headed back to the old school punk they covered all across January for a special Valentine’s Day rendition of Too Drunk To Fuck by The Dead Kennedys. Far Out: Robert Fripp and Toyah release cover of Smashing Pumpkins: King Crimson bandleader Robert Fripp has issued a cover of ‘Bullet With Butterfly Wings’, featuring wife Toyah Wilcox on lead vocals. The song is a cover of a Smashing Pumpkins tune that was released in the 1990s. The song sits among a series of covers the duo have recorded in their spare time. This recording is notable for Fripp’s casual tone, as the guitarist says “bollocks” as he hits the wrong notes at one juncture in time. The pair have been releasing video renditions of rock numbers since 2021, performing numbers written by The Clash, The Prodigy and Alice Cooper – Continue reading…
