Super Deluxe Edition: Cherry Red Steps Up Toyah Reissues

July 13th, 2022

Cherry Red steps up Toyah reissues with massive Anthem box set

1981 album gets the super deluxe treatment

Toyah’s 1981 album Anthem will be reissued in September across three physical formats, one of which is a large seven-disc super deluxe edition box set which comes with a signed print.

The album was the first to feature the new line-up of Toyah Willcox, Joel Bogen, Nigel Glockler, Phil Spalding and Adrian Lee. It reached number two in the UK album charts and contained a pair of top ten hits in ‘It’s A Mystery’ (which was issued in February ’81 as part of the ‘Four From Toyah’ EP) and ‘I Want To Be Free’ which was issued just before the album in May of that same year. Audio for the reissues has been remastered by Nick Watson (from the original master tapes) and approved by Joel Bogen.

Songs Smiths: 40 Years Ago: Maneaters “Nine to Five”

July 13th, 2022

“July 9, 1982”: Adam Ant and Toyah are the subject of a little more exploitation by Polydor Records. A song that the pair did together four years ago for the “Jubilee” soundtrack has been dusted off and released as a single. After Adam’s lawyers caught wind of this impending single, they insisted that it not be packaged as “Adam Ant & Toyah” as they had intended, but instead as “The Maneaters,” the name that the song appeared originally under.

Metro: Age Won’t Change Toyah Willcox

June 24th, 2022

Age won’t change Toyah Willcox: ‘We’ve never stopped being rockers, we are just rockers in a different time and place’

Toyah Willcox says she’s far more than a punk princess

Born out of a lockdown-powered creative burst, Toyah Willcox and musician husband Robert Fripp’s weekly online Sunday Lunch videos have quickly become regular news events.

Cheeky, audacious, entertaining, and even eye-watering, each episode has been attracting hundreds of thousands of views.

But if you think they’re big now, wait till you hear what’s next.

‘We are developing a stage show and a movie is in development as well,’ reveals Toyah, adding that the duo are even considering an album.

‘But once you get into a studio situation you’ve got to rethink everything, and how people will experience that in an album form.

‘It’s not a no, but it takes an awful lot of consideration.’

Cover Me: In The Spotlight – Toyah & Robert

In the Spotlight: Toyah Willcox & Robert Fripp

In the Spotlight showcases a cross-section of an artist’s cover work. View past instalments, then post suggestions for future picks in the comments!

Hmmm–“In the Spotlight” could well be the giveaway, being exactly where at least half of this odd couple seems, more than anything else, to want to be. Odd couple? Well, back in the day, I daresay that the idea of Robert Fripp, the complex guitar wrangler of King Crimson fame, besuited and besitted always, having a lengthy and lasting marriage with Toyah Willcox, the punk-pop princess of Birmingham with the look-at-me dramatics, was not one of life’s great certainties.

I confess to being quite delighted by the couple’s first forays into Sunday Lunchtime COVID-19 entertainment, as much for the bizarre hoops Mrs. Fripp could put her permanently-bemused husband through, in the sake of raising the spirits of those who stumbled onto these little vignettes of, apparently, their life.

According to Willcox, the purpose of these weekly vids was primarily to lift Fripp out of the black dog that permeated him as lockdown locked down, depriving him of both an outlet for and an income for his art. So, on 5th April 2020, those idly browsing the net became party to the extraordinary image of the couple, dressed to the nines, having a bop to Bill Haley’s vintage hit, “Rock Around the Clock.” And looking to be having a whale of a time.

The Guardian: Toyah Willcox and Robert Fripp Look Back

May 30th, 2022

Toyah Willcox and Robert Fripp look back: ‘He came from the 60s, having multiple girlfriends at once’

The musicians recreate a photo from their wedding – a day of panic, pasta and paparazzi

Toyah Willcox and Robert Fripp are a rock star couple turned lockdown YouTubers. Actor and musician Willcox, 64, rocketed to fame during the punk rock era, appearing in cult movies such as Quadrophenia, before releasing 80s hits such as It’s a Mystery.

Meanwhile, Fripp, 76, is a founding member of King Crimson, and has collaborated with artists including David Bowie and Brian Eno.

Both prolific musicians, they launched the successful Sunday Lunch video series in 2020, in which they cover classic songs in their home in Pershore, Worcestershire.

Toyah: This photograph was taken on our wedding day in 1986, which started off really dull and rainy, but as soon as we got to the church the sun came out. Robert was terrified. I was enjoying it, but very nervous: I had to keep the ceremony secret so photos weren’t leaked to the press. Sadly, the papers got wind and we were chased by paparazzi for two days afterwards. They were banging on the car door, shouting and saying that if we didn’t let them get a picture they were going to print a bad story about us. It wasn’t fun.

Toyah! Toyah! Toyah!: Review by We Are Cult

May 21st, 2022

Alive, She Cried: ‘Toyah! Toyah! Toyah!’

Cherry Red continue with their impressive re-releases of Toyah’s albums, writes James Collingwood.

After only two albums it may have seemed slightly early in Toyah’s career to record a live album. However there appeared to be three reasons for the release of Toyah! Toyah! Toyah! in 1980.

One: Toyah had been filmed for a one-hour ATV documentary that included clips from this gig and brought her nationwide coverage. Two: It was a last add on gig of a UK tour and would be the last time she played with this particular band. Thirdly: She was on the cusp of stardom and becoming a regular Smash Hits and Look-In cover star.

Cherry Red continue with their impressive chronological repackaging of Toyah’s Safari Records albums with their re-release of the live album Toyah! Toyah! Toyah! Presented as an expanded deluxe CD+DVD and a limited edition coloured vinyl LP this album includes the full ATV documentary Toyah!, originally broadcast December 1980, a 24-page booklet with artwork and photos, an introduction by Toyah herself and sleeve notes by Toyah’s archivist and compiler Craig Astley.

Toyah must have been the hardest working woman in showbiz at the time and really was on a mission to succeed. She seems to have been everywhere. As well as fronting and touring with the band Toyah was constantly working as a TV, film and stage actress. On stage she had recently appeared in Nigel Williams’ Sugar and Spice at the Royal Court. She had appeared as Monkey in Quadrophenia, in Derek Jarman’s Jubilee and The Tempest, and who can forget her appearance in Shoestring!

Bordon Herald: Electric Ladies Tour

May 21st, 2022

Toyah, Lene Lovich and Saffron of Republica help Hazel O’Connor

The Electric Ladies tour by Toyah, Lene Lovich and Saffron of Republica in support of Hazel O’Connor is coming to The Anvil in Basingstoke on June 16 at 7.45pm.

Hazel is still recovering from suffering a bleed on the brain and is unable to join the tour, but she will be very much with the others in spirit. Her singing and acting career took off in 1980 when she played Kate in the film Breaking Glass while also writing and performing its soundtrack album. This produced hits including Will You, the tale of a woman who nervously edges towards spending the night with her new man for the first time.

Toyah Willcox is one of the most recognisable faces in UK pop culture, clocking up an impressive ten hit singles and eight hit albums, including a gold-selling anthem, and her recent hit album, Posh Pop. Her biggest hits include It’s A Mystery, Thunder in the Mountains and I Want To Be Free.

She will be joined on this tour by new wave pioneer Lene Lovich, whose hits in the late 1970s included Lucky Number and I Think We’re Alone Now, and 1990s indie rock chick Saffron from Republica, whose hits included Ready To Go.

Performing alongside their full band, each artist will perform their own set alongside some collaborations. Some of Hazel’s songs will also be performed, and a portion of the income from each show will go directly towards helping her with her ongoing recovery. For tickets, priced £32, call 01256 844244 or visit anvilarts.org.uk

Toyah! Toyah! Toyah!: Review by At The Barrier

May 18th, 2022

Third instalment in Cherry Red’s deluxe reissue series of Toyah’s Safari Records catalogue

Release Date: 13th May 2022
Label: Cherry Red Records
Formats: CD + DVD, Limited edition neon yellow vinyl

So – here we are again. Just about a year ago, we were pleased to review the deluxe reissue of Toyah’s second album, The Blue Meaning, and now, here comes installment number three in Cherry Red Records’ Toyah reissue series – a CD/DVD reassessment of the seminal 1980 live album, Toyah! Toyah! Toyah! And, as usual, it’s a cracking package. The CD-half of the package comprises, for the first time, the entire concert – complete with encores – from Toyah’s show on 17 June 1980 at Wolverhampton’s legendary Club Lafayette. The CD is accompanied by a DVD of the 1980 ATV documentary film ‘Toyah’ – a splendid period piece that captures Toyah at home, at work and at play, just as she reached the very cusp of her major commercial breakthrough. As usual, the package comes complete with an informative booklet, this time with detailed sleevenotes from Craig Astley, Toyah’s official archivist, and an introductory reminiscence from Toyah herself.

The gig at the Club Lafayette was added, for the benefit of the ATV camera crew, to the itinerary of Toyah’s 1980 Ieya Tour to provide some live footage for inclusion in the documentary that was in the process of being compiled. The band played a slightly shorter set than was normal for the time, with material drawn exclusively from the debut album Sheep Farming In Barnet and the (then) new release The Blue Meaning and the resulting live album, Toyah! Toyah! Toyah! was a triumph. Toyah is on top form as she shrieks, squeaks, groans and howls her way through a dramatic performance. The recording captures the enclosed atmosphere of the packed club wonderfully – in the way that the best live albums always seem to manage – and the setlist is inspired. Toyah! Toyah! Toyah! Reached number three in the indie chart and stayed in that chart for over a year and was Toyah’s first album to creep into the national album chart, peaking at number 22. Big things were just around the corner, and that impending breakthrough seems to ooze from the very grooves of this album.
