Brighton News: Gig Review – Posh Pop Tour | Hastings

March 20th, 2022

Sensational Toyah Brings Her ‘Posh Pop Tour’ to East Sussex

TOYAH + HOLLY DEANNA (CURRLS) – ST MARY IN THE CASTLE, HASTINGS 12.3.22

The music scene in Hastings has steadily been getting back on its feet this year and is starting to thrive once again. Tonight’s show at St Mary In The Castle is a sure sign of a return to normality though you could hardly describe Toyah as ‘normal’.

My first encounter with Toyah may have been as a 16 year old hearing ‘Sheep Farming In Barnet’ and being most intrigued by her, or it could have been watching her playing ‘Monkey’ in ‘Quadrophenia’ around the same time, but whichever I was hooked.

I got around to seeing her in the flesh for my one and only time at Drury Lane Theatre Royal on Christmas Eve, 1981, which was actually broadcast on BBC2 as an ‘Old Grey Whistle Test’ special. I say seeing her in the flesh but my main recollection of that night is being stuck in the balcony about as far away as you could get. I then lost my return tube ticket home, but luckily the train inspector was full of Christmas cheer and allowed me through the barrier.

Tonight was my opportunity to reconnect having lost touch with her career and was surprised to find out that she has released 16 albums, of which 11 are as a solo artist. Throw in a few compilation albums and a box set, and you have quite an accomplished music career. Of course that isn’t the end of her talents as she has appeared in over 20 films, presented on television, appeared in numerous shows, and done a fair bit of charity fundraising.

Far Out: Robert Fripp and Toyah Wilcox support Ukraine: Over the course of the Covid-19 epidemic, King Crimson guitarist Robert Fripp issued a series of videos featuring his wife Toyah Wilcox on lead vocals. Classic Rock/Louder: Ghost hunter ‘strangled’ in Toyah Willcox’s haunted home: On a recent episode of Celebrity Help! My House is Haunted, ghost hunters investigated Toyah Willcox’s home with unexpected consequences – Usually featuring self-proclaimed psychics and supernatural investigators shrieking hysterically into night vision lenses every time their camera crew bump into furniture, ghost hunting shows on TV have largely been disappointing. This was not the case last month, however, when paranormal experts visited Toyah Willcox’s home in Pershore, Worcestershire, for Celebrity Help! My House is Haunted, to find out whether the pop star’s abode was supernaturally troubled, as she suggests – Continue reading…

Birmingham Mail: My House is Haunted cleaner ‘had a bad feeling in the en suite’ of eerie home: Toyah’s Pershore haunted house has further ghostly revelations from its former cleaner – Further spooky revelations have surfaced about the Worcestershire haunted house where TV ghost hunter Barri Ghai was filmed being ‘strangled’ by an evil spirit in the loft. Now the former cleaner of the historic Pershore property has come forward revealing there were public hangings in the attic. The Georgian house is owned by 1980s pop icon Toyah Willcox, who got the TV Help! My House is Haunted team in to help her after experiencing “persistent paranormal activity” since she moved in 20 years ago. Former cleaner Chrissi Rock, from Evesham, said: “I used to clean Toyah’s house in 1997 before she bought it – Continue reading…

Consequence: Robert Fripp and Toyah Support Ukraine with Neil Young and Living Colour Covers: The couple perform “Rockin’ in the Free World” and “Cult of Personality” to condemn Russia’s invasion of Ukraine – During the course of the pandemic, King Crimson guitarist Robert Fripp and his singer wife, Toyah Willcox, have been distracting music fans with lighthearted and eye-catching covers of iconic rock tunes. This week, the couple took a more serious tone as they turned their attention toward the war in Ukraine, performing Neil Young’s “Rockin’ in the Free World” and Living Colour’s “Cult of Personality.” For their latest “Sunday Lunch” performance, Robert and Toyah take on Young’s “Rockin’ in the Free World.” While the original may have been an indictment of American policies under the George H. W. Bush administration at the time Young released the song in 1989, it’s clear that the Robert and Toyah are focusing on Russia’s current attack on the freedom of the Ukrainian people right now – Continue reading…

Tone Deaf: Robert Fripp and Toyah release bonus cover for the Ukrainian people: Just after dropping a cover of ‘Lonely Boy’ by The Black Keys, Robert Fripp and Toyah returned with an ode to the Ukrainian people – Robert Fripp and Toyah, it’s fair to say, have been having a really fun time making their Sunday Lunch services since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. The pair have covered everyone from The Undertones to Patti Smith to The Velvet Underground – throughout each cover, Fripp happily strums his guitar while smiling pleasantly, as his partner Toyah dances loosely and wildly around him in their kitchen. It’s an endearing ritual and it clearly works for them – Continue reading…

Brooklyn Vegan: Toyah and Robert Fripp Say “Ukraine We Hear You”, Cover Living Colour’s “Cult Of Personality”: Toyah Wilcox and King Crimson’s Robert Fripp have been covering songs in their kitchen since lockdown on their saucy and very popular “Sunday Lunch” YouTube series, but they just dropped a new one in support of Ukraine. They’ve covered Living Colour’s politically minded 1988 hit “Cult of Personality,” and have done so in a more serious manner than usual, without the razzle dazzle, though Toyah does work a little clever mirror magic when she sings “Neon lights, a Nobel Prize / Then a mirror speaks, the reflection lies.” They also made a version of the flag of the President of the Ukraine that’s affixed to their kitchen cupboards, and at the end the title “Ukraine We Hear You” comes across the screen – Continue reading…

Unlike Black Keys’ singer Dan Auerbach’s complaint that he has a love who keeps him waiting, Robert and Toyah are always right on time with their “Sunday Lunch” performances — hence a giant clock prop, a hand-drawn clock poster, and a large yellow watch – Continue reading…

Clarence Hall: It Wasn’t A Mystery

February 26th, 2022

Earlier in the month, the Clarence Hall hosted the iconic music legend, Toyah Willcox, as part of her Posh Pop Tour. As promoter Jamie Richards of Woodfired Summit said: “It wasn’t a mystery why the crowd loved her. Such talent, such presence, such enthusiasm and so much energy”.

Hall Trustee David Jeremiah was in the audience, and has contributed the following perspective:

“Music defines us. I identify with R&B and Rock and Roll so, Toyah’s arrival on the “Hip Hop” “Punk” music scene in 81/82 had passed me by. Nevertheless, during lockdown, I had become hooked on “Toyah and Robert’s Sunday Lunch” – see it on YouTube. Knowing she was appearing at the Clarence Hall, I bought four tickets and persuaded Ann and two old rocker friends to come along.

The gig was a sell-out. The Hall was buzzing, and the music was loud. Without a doubt the evening was a roaring success and Toyah, admitting to never being in this part of the world before, was effusive about Crickhowell in general and the Hall in Particular.
