Dreamscape’s Christmas Wish: Toyah In Doctor Who!

December 15th, 2023

Toyah is currently receiving a lot of praise for her performance in the, just released,  Doctor Who related audio drama, Children Of The Circus, in the role(s) of The Band of Infinite Harmony.

Sci Fi Bulletin: Toyah Willcox is spectacular as the Band of Infinite Harmony, a gestalt musician maimed into something approaching harmonious perfection by the Gods of Ragnarok

Warped Factor: Joining them is 1980s icon Toyah Willcox, who plays The Band of Infinite Harmony, a multi-voiced role that she relishes, culminating in a solo song featured as a bonus track.

• So, here’s that question again – When is RTD (Russell T. Davies, Doctor Who showrunner) going to get his arse in gear and cast Toyah in the main, BBC, series? (Image/Logo © BBC/Disney)

Classic Pop: Trevor Horn Talks Toyah & Robert & Relax!

December 13th, 2023

Toyah & Robert are referenced a couple of times in the latest issue of Classic Pop magazine, in articles on Trevor Horn and his recently released album, Echoes: Ancient & Modern. Toyah & Robert cover, the Frankie Goes To Hollywood 1983 super hit, Relax, on the album. It’s a radically different version of the song too.

Review: The overriding mood on Echoes is stately and graceful. If that means Horn appears to be trolling adherents of the filth and mayhem of the original Relax by getting Toyah to happily croon over a new just-so glide, think of it instead as a fresh remix. That’ll be Mr Toyah, Robert Fripp, doing its precise guitar. Him and Horn know what they’re doing.

Feature: Then Trevor happened to catch Toyah and Robert Fripp covering Slave To The Rhythm on one of their online lockdown shows, and the deck was duly shuffled.

“I’ve always liked Toyah – I’ve bumped into her loads of times, she’s like a ball of energy. I like her vibe. So they did it. And I think it came out pretty well, even though I was afraid of messing around with it too much. I restrained myself. Robert’s solo is definitely one of my favourite guitar solos I’ve recorded.”

County Press: Toyah & Robert/Isle Of Wight Festival

YouTube hits Toyah and Fripp at Isle of Wight Festival in Photos

The husband and wife musical partnership of Toyah Willcox and Robert Fripp — both from strangely different but equally experimental musical backgrounds — performed their popular Sunday Lunch Live show in the Big Top.

It was enjoyed by the musically nostalgic and those of younger generations perhaps searching for their own musical roots to follow.

Sunday’s afternoon show was, as you would expect with Fripp, musically precise, while Toyah showed infectious, punk-rooted enthusiasm with her performance.

She performed a set which included some of her solo classics, It’s a Mystery and I Want to Be Free, together with some great pop standards, such as Bowie’s Heroes and Billy Idol’s Rebel Yell.

With a career spanning more than 40 years, Willcox is perhaps best known for fronting the band Toyah between 1977 to 1983 before going solo in the mid-1980s

There are plenty of celebrities connected to Dorset from award-winning Hollywood actors to popstars and renowned radio DJs. Whether they were past alumni of schools in the county or have settled here in their later life, it seems Dorset shows no bounds when it comes to its celebrity connections.

This is true of punk Princess Toyah Willcox who has opted for a quiet life in Dorset secluded away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Her connections to the county run deeper than you might think from being married in Dorset to owning a home here.

Punk babe Toyah Willcox has had a varied career – from writing books to performing with her band, it seems there’s nothing she won’t try. Take a look at some of the rebellious rockstar’s raunchiest looks

Toyah Willcox has been on the scene for more than four decades as a jack of all trades, having tried her hand at everything from singing and acting to presenting.

Birmingham-born Toyah was known as a rebel and, due to her bold hair colours and flamboyant style, she was once known as “The Bird of Paradise” during her youth.

She began her career in theatre before she turned her passion to music. While playing a role at the National Theatre, she started Toyah and the band became very successful.

Posh Pop: Toyah’s Highest Charting Studio Album Since 1982!!

September 3rd, 2021

This is incredible news, and a huge congratulations to Toyah. As well as Simon Darlow, Bobby Willcox and the entire team who brought us Posh Pop.

The 2021 studio album charts today at #22 on the Official UK Album Chart. Posh Pop becomes Toyah’s highest charting studio album since 1982, when The Changeling peaked at #6. Warrior Rock: Toyah On Tour, a live double album – which will be reissued in the next year or so, as will the rest of Toyah’s post-The Blue Meaning Safari Records’ back catalogue – peaked at #20 that same year.

The only other Toyah albums to peak higher than this are Anthem (1981) #2, The Changeling (1982) #6 and the aforementioned Warrior Rock: Toyah On Tour (1982) #20. Posh Pop equals with, another live album, Toyah! Toyah! Toyah! (1980) which hit #22 in early 1981.

Further great news is that Posh Pop achieves Toyah her highest ever chart position as a solo artist, and the album is also #1 on the official Independent chart, #6 on the official Physical chart, #6 on the official Sales chart, #9 on the official Vinyl chart, #20 on the official Download chart and #8 on the official Scottish chart. Phew! Amazing stats! If the Album Chart was, as it used to be, simply a sales chart Toyah would certainly have a Top 10 album!!

Reader’s Digest: Toyah Willcox: I Remember

August 20th, 2021

Toyah Willcox is an English musician, actress and TV presenter. From fronting a band to releasing solo music, there is little that she hasn’t done across a four-decade career

My childhood was definitely privileged. We had hot water, heating, food, we had our own home, and I went to a private school.

Having a limp, dyslexia and a lisp. I wasn’t even aware of it. I was having a perfectly happy childhood until people pointed out that I had a physical difference to everyone else in the room. Then, when I was sitting my 11-plus people realised that I was not on the same page as everyone else because of dyslexia. Alan Sugar, Richard Branson—you could name a thousand people who have exactly the same experience as me and we’re doing perfectly well. I have such a wonderful life. I have overcome so much.
