Bordon Herald: Electric Ladies Tour

May 21st, 2022

Toyah, Lene Lovich and Saffron of Republica help Hazel O’Connor

The Electric Ladies tour by Toyah, Lene Lovich and Saffron of Republica in support of Hazel O’Connor is coming to The Anvil in Basingstoke on June 16 at 7.45pm.

Hazel is still recovering from suffering a bleed on the brain and is unable to join the tour, but she will be very much with the others in spirit. Her singing and acting career took off in 1980 when she played Kate in the film Breaking Glass while also writing and performing its soundtrack album. This produced hits including Will You, the tale of a woman who nervously edges towards spending the night with her new man for the first time.

Toyah Willcox is one of the most recognisable faces in UK pop culture, clocking up an impressive ten hit singles and eight hit albums, including a gold-selling anthem, and her recent hit album, Posh Pop. Her biggest hits include It’s A Mystery, Thunder in the Mountains and I Want To Be Free.

She will be joined on this tour by new wave pioneer Lene Lovich, whose hits in the late 1970s included Lucky Number and I Think We’re Alone Now, and 1990s indie rock chick Saffron from Republica, whose hits included Ready To Go.

Performing alongside their full band, each artist will perform their own set alongside some collaborations. Some of Hazel’s songs will also be performed, and a portion of the income from each show will go directly towards helping her with her ongoing recovery. For tickets, priced £32, call 01256 844244 or visit anvilarts.org.uk

Brighton News: Gig Review – Posh Pop Tour | Hastings

Sensational Toyah Brings Her ‘Posh Pop Tour’ to East Sussex

TOYAH + HOLLY DEANNA (CURRLS) – ST MARY IN THE CASTLE, HASTINGS 12.3.22

The music scene in Hastings has steadily been getting back on its feet this year and is starting to thrive once again. Tonight’s show at St Mary In The Castle is a sure sign of a return to normality though you could hardly describe Toyah as ‘normal’.

My first encounter with Toyah may have been as a 16 year old hearing ‘Sheep Farming In Barnet’ and being most intrigued by her, or it could have been watching her playing ‘Monkey’ in ‘Quadrophenia’ around the same time, but whichever I was hooked.

I got around to seeing her in the flesh for my one and only time at Drury Lane Theatre Royal on Christmas Eve, 1981, which was actually broadcast on BBC2 as an ‘Old Grey Whistle Test’ special. I say seeing her in the flesh but my main recollection of that night is being stuck in the balcony about as far away as you could get. I then lost my return tube ticket home, but luckily the train inspector was full of Christmas cheer and allowed me through the barrier.

Tonight was my opportunity to reconnect having lost touch with her career and was surprised to find out that she has released 16 albums, of which 11 are as a solo artist. Throw in a few compilation albums and a box set, and you have quite an accomplished music career. Of course that isn’t the end of her talents as she has appeared in over 20 films, presented on television, appeared in numerous shows, and done a fair bit of charity fundraising.

Clarence Hall: It Wasn’t A Mystery

February 26th, 2022

Earlier in the month, the Clarence Hall hosted the iconic music legend, Toyah Willcox, as part of her Posh Pop Tour. As promoter Jamie Richards of Woodfired Summit said: “It wasn’t a mystery why the crowd loved her. Such talent, such presence, such enthusiasm and so much energy”.

Hall Trustee David Jeremiah was in the audience, and has contributed the following perspective:

“Music defines us. I identify with R&B and Rock and Roll so, Toyah’s arrival on the “Hip Hop” “Punk” music scene in 81/82 had passed me by. Nevertheless, during lockdown, I had become hooked on “Toyah and Robert’s Sunday Lunch” – see it on YouTube. Knowing she was appearing at the Clarence Hall, I bought four tickets and persuaded Ann and two old rocker friends to come along.

The gig was a sell-out. The Hall was buzzing, and the music was loud. Without a doubt the evening was a roaring success and Toyah, admitting to never being in this part of the world before, was effusive about Crickhowell in general and the Hall in Particular.
