Christmas 2022 Countdown: Day 11: Musical Milestones

December 15th, 2022

Christmas 2012, Toyah guested on Marlow FM’s ‘Musical Milestones’ on The Eclectic Light Show.

She discussed her life and career in relation to music and what it has meant to her, as well as its importance in her life. Toyah also chose six pieces of her favourite music, for significant reasons which she discusses during the programme.

The music choices were by Gustav Holst (Mars, The Planet Suite), Simon & Garfunkel (Bridge Over Troubled Water), T. Rex (Ride A White Swan), David Bowie (Life On Mars), Shakespears Sister (Stay), Muse (Supermassive Black Hole).

“Music embodies your soul, it embodies your physicality, it embodies your thoughts…”

This aired on Christmas Eve that year, and at the time marlow FM didn’t have a Listen Again function so I recorded it and uploaded to Dreamscape a low quality mp3 of the 30-minute special. Click below to listen/download.

Their tactics of moving the stall and reducing prices have no effect, until they’re approached by one interested party who engages Will in conversation about his style and method. Halfway through their conversation Will’s stunned to realise he’s talking to Toyah Willcox. Will’s a big fan. Toyah takes a shine to one of his works. Will offers it free, but Toyah insists on paying. When she’s gone star struck Will can’t believe it – who cares what anyone else thinks of his work when Toyah loves it!

Lilian reassures nervous Adil in the fortune telling tent; he’s doing really well and his last client was very famous. Adil’s oblivious, and later is keen to quit while he’s ahead having given Jean Harvey a reading she was happy with. Lilian reckons he’s found his calling. She encourages him to go and look round the rest of the fete, but when Denise turns up Lilian can’t help offering Adil’s services for one last reading. With no knowledge of Denise, terrified Adil does his best. He hits on the idea that she has a secret admirer at work. Denise is amazed, and confides to Lilian that this knowledge has helped her with a dilemma she has. Midge Ure reveals the bizarre world of musicians on tour

He spills the beans on ‘the rider’, tour catering, tricky artists and overprotective managers and the most eye-watering examples of rock ‘n’ roll excess, and frugality, backstage. Getting a rock tour on the road is a massive undertaking, particularly if the star has a large entourage. Just feeding the crew is a military operation.

Having spent nearly 30 years on the road, Midge is perfectly placed to reveal the reality of musicians on tour. Fascinated by this bizarre backstage world, Midge goes on a mission to track down music promoters, tour managers, caterers, roadies, record company employees and the stars themselves to gather together the most intriguing and amusing backstage tales. The programme also hears from Jason Donovan, Boy George, Kim Wilde, Toyah Willcox and Martin Kemp.
