The Great British Walk: Toyah Willcox

September 12th, 2012

Toyah tells The National Trust about her favourite walk at Croome Park in Worcestershire. Why not tell ‘The National Trust’ about your favourite walk? Watch Toyah’s walk by clicking below, and view all of our Toyah related ‘Great British Walk’ news here.

There’s also a brief Toyah article on Toyah’s Great British Walk at the National Trust website: It’s the setting of Croome Park that appeals to Toyah Willcox, the multi-talented singer, performer and writer. ‘We tend to forget the fabulous countryside we have all around us, and it’s there for us to discover’, she said. There’s also a PDF file available with details of Toyah’s walk.

… I’m Just A Street Creature!

September 4th, 2012

It isn’t included in ‘The Changeling Resurrection’ set lists, but ‘Street Creature’ – which could/should have been a single back in 1982 – is still a huge fan favourite. Probably the “poppiest” track on ‘The Changeling’ and a song Toyah had an absolute ball performing on Get Set For SummerThree Of A Kind and Razzmatazz in ‘Summer ’82 (For Michael :))

Manchester Pride 2012: News Briefs

August 30th, 2012

A few newsy bits on Toyah’s Manchester Pride PA. There was a very large crowd for Toyah headlining the Women’s Stage at Sackville Gardens (Alison Moyet was the Main Stage headliner) and after the gig Toyah chatted to, and was photographed with, fans at the artist’s gate.

• Toyah tweeted: “Manchester Pride was excellent. Great crowd & so friendly & welcoming. I Loved it.”

• A lot of footage from Toyah’s set have been uploaded to You Tube. Highlights include, the previously mentioned, Thunder In The Mountains, It’s A Mystery, I Want To Be Free and Echo Beach.

• There’s also a 17 minute upload of Toyah’s performance. View here.

• The photos I’ve posted here over the last few days will be added to Dreamscape’s Gallery soon. View all of our Toyah at Manchester Pride news.

Thanks to Paul Lomas and Paul Cable for the photos, videos and info!!

August 17th, 2012

The complete, four-part, late 70s version of Quatermass, starring John Mills and Simon MacCorkindale, in which Toyah also had a small role as Sal, is available to view in full at ‘You Tube’. This was made by Euston Films, filmed in 1978 and aired on ITV in October and November 1979: Chapter One: Ringstone Round; Chapter Two: Lovely Lightning; Chapter Three: What Lies Beneath; Chapter Four: An Endangered Species. View a photo of Toyah taken during the filming here. The series has previously been released on VHS and DVD but is currently unavailable. This was also released as a television film in 1979, The Quatermass Conclusion, an edited down version of these four episodes. View further info at Wikipedia.

Classic Toyah on TV: Get Set For Summer (1982)

August 12th, 2012

This has always been one of my favourite Toyah TV appearances, especially as there is very little footage from 1982 of live performances of songs from ‘The Changeling’: It’s BBC1’s Get Set For Summer from July 1982. The band perform ‘Castaways’, ‘Street Creature’ and ‘Brave New World’ and Toyah is also interviewed by Peter Powell. View all at Dreamscape’s You Tube playlist. (Thanks to Andi)

July 17th, 2012

Just uploaded to You Tube. The incredible ‘Blue Meanings’ from last night’s Hare & Hounds gig.

Spectrum: Florence & The Machine @ No. 1

July 15th, 2012

As expected, Florence & the Machine have scored their first number one single with ‘Spectrum (Say My Name)’. It entered the UK Top 40 this evening. View the video.

I know some disagree but I still think the video and imagery is heavily influenced by early 80s Toyah and Kate Bush (who were in turn influenced by David Bowie of course). Good to have a decent song at number one for a change :) I’ll shut up about Florence now!!!

Rock In The City: Toyah Special 1981

July 13th, 2012

Someone has, just today, uploaded the full HQ Rock In The City Toyah Special, from 1981, to You Tube. National Lottery’s Greatest Hits: It’s A Mystery (1999)

May 25th, 2012

Music was very much on the backburner at the time so when Toyah appeared on the National Lottery’s Greatest Hits in 1999 it was an exciting moment. It was a great performance and Toyah even wore a classic Melissa Caplan outfit for the occasion. Show host Angela Griffin introduced Toyah by claiming ‘It’s A Mystery’ was a “number one hit”. Not quite but who cares it was just good to see Toyah singing on TV again. She also released the lottery balls and as she pressed the button exclaimed “may this finger make you rich“! Unfortunately it didn’t. View at You Tube, and see larger caps here. (Thanks to Paul Lomas)

Birthday 2012: Look! Hear!: Full Edition

May 18th, 2012

Toyah co-presented Look! Hear! for ‘BBC Midlands’ for three series between 1979 and 1981. The programme covered music and the arts in The Midlands and was made at BBC Pebble Mill studios. This programme, from the 1981 series, includes two live performances from Duran Duran. Click below to watch the full edition (in six parts). (Thanks to Andi)

Birthday 2012: Dear Heart: Full Edition

May 18th, 2012

Toyah appeared in, what was billed as a “younger version of Not The Nine O’Clock News“, Dear Heart in Spring 1982. There was only one series, which aired on BBC2. The best known of the numerous characters Toyah played was probably “Super Advice Person”, who appeared every week. Click below to view a full edition (in five parts). (Thanks to Andi)

Toyah News Briefs

April 30th, 2012

• A rare shot from a well-known 1978 Toyah photo session has appeared online. It was used as a “pin-up” in Issue 16 of the fanzine Ripped and Torn in January 1979. Photos from this session were most famously used on the cover of, and inside, ‘Record Mirror’, also in January 1979.

• Lärwi has compiled a great video to mark the 30th anniversary of ‘The Changeling’ and ‘Warrior Rock’, with music from 1982 and visuals from 2012. View it at You Tube.

• ‘Ieya’ is included in ‘The Epileptic Gibbon Podcast Music Show’ in their 77th podcast: “Episode 77: The Far Distant Dead”. View here.

Tommy’s Garage: Toyah Willcox, Pioneer of Punk + New Wave: She’s an incredible woman and artist. We Love Toyah!

• The Changeling Resurrection 2012′: Autumn Tour: Numerous dates for the Autumn tour are already all over the internet. No point in mentioning them here until they are officially confirmed. This one, however, at Rechabite Hall, Telford (a new venue), is worth a look. Their flyer is full of great bands.
