With 30 albums, 25 feature films and countless theatre and TV presenting roles under her belt, punk rocker Toyah Willcox is one of the biggest stars of the 1980s. But her first brush with fame came in less glamorous surroundings – when Rod Stewart visited the caravan park she used to go to every weekend with her family near Birmingham, the Wyre Mill Club.

“One day this group of people who used to come here turned up with Rod,” recalls Toyah. “I was only six at the time, so I didn’t really know who he was. I just remember everybody was going absolutely crazy and the girls were all screaming, ‘oh my god, it’s Rod Stewart!’.

“The club is just that kind of place, where stars come to hide. Paul Weller was here recently and we’ve snuck Kate Bush in here before. When I became famous, I’d go there myself to escape the paparazzi.”

Since she burst on to the music scene as the front woman of the new wave band Toyah in 1977 following appearances in plays, Toyah, 64 has rubbed shoulders with many famous faces. Also an actress, she starred alongside Phil Daniels in 1979 mod flick Quadrophenia and iconic actor Laurence Olivier in 1984 TV movie the Ebony Tower, and she also went into the I’m A Celebrity jungle in 2003.

Mirror: Masked Singer Fans Think Panda Is Toyah!

January 26th, 2022

Masked Singer fans ‘rumble’ celebrity on show – but for more than one character

The Masked Singer UK fans say they’ve got clues and proof that one star is under the mask, but she’s been named as playing multiple characters

The Masked Singer UK viewers have shared their thoughts on Twitter over the latest batch of characters. One name in particular has been shared constantly with fans believing they have proof she is on the show. However, the particular celebrity has in fact been suggested for multiple characters, while one in particular.

Musician, actress, and TV presenter Toyah Willcox is tipped to be unmasked as Panda on the hit ITV series, with fans convinced it is her. That said, she’s also been thrown into the mix for Rockhopper and Mushroom, as well as Firework.

Basically, fans are convinced the vocals and clues match her for all of the characters, but she can’t possibly be playing all of them can she? While we wouldn’t put it past the double-bluffing bosses on the show, the characters have all appeared on stage at the same time at one point, or at least most of them have. It is also very unlikely they have one celebrity performing as more than one character, meaning someone else has to be the other characters.

It’s Panda that has had the most guesses as being Toyah by viewers, with many convinced the vocals gave the game away.

• Continue reading at The Mirror. NB. The Sun, Express, Independent and others have a similar story but they have Cyndi Lauper as Panda. The Masked Singer continues this Saturday evening on ITV at 7pm. Have a listen…. Definitely not Toyah but it does sound sort of like Cyndi!

mirror14aAs Paul Ross is (unsurprisingly) sent home, here’s what we learned from week two of the celebrity diving competition

Toyah Has A Close Shave – But Still Scores High: Toyah Willcox, described as the princess of punk as she sashays across the pool to the sound of Pink’s ‘So What’, looks like she’s up for the challenge of the competition… Her performance is really good – but Toyah tucks in so early that her hair actually brushes the board as she falls into the water. Any closer and she could have smacked her head, suffered partial memory loss. Imagine… The judges loved Toyah’s energy and skill, praising her for punching above her weight. She gets an 8, 8.5 and 7.5, equalling an impressive 24.

Toyah And Anna Duke It Out In The Splash-Off: After Paul Ross and Martin are (unsurprisingly) sent home, and Keith Duffy is put through to next week, it falls to the two honourable ladies of the evening, Toyah and Anna, to duke it out for a position in the semi-final… Jo Brand wants Toyah to go through, and reminds us all she’s had a hip operation, but the other judges choose Anna and she is sent through with Keith.

Here is the print version of Toyah’s interview with the ‘Mirror’ from Tuesday. It is, of course, the same interview that was published on their website.  This edition also includes the great photo of Toyah from 1981.

‘For 40 years I’ve survived on three hours’ sleep a night’: Toyah Willcox on her battle with insomnia

Born with a twisted spine, a clubbed right foot and one leg shorter than the other, singer and actress Toyah Willcox has also suffered from chronic insomnia for 40 years.

Now the 54-year-old, who lives with her husband, musician Robert Fripp, 66, has finally found relief through having acupuncture.

I’ve suffered from chronic insomnia for 40 years. It started when I was a 14-year-old dyslexic schoolgirl revising for my exams in Birmingham. I experienced the typical teenage stress that the pressure of cramming for exams, and then sitting there for hours on end doing them brings.

During what felt like a solid month of exam papers, I just stopped sleeping. Once the pattern set in, it became a habit and I never really addressed it because back then no one really talked about insomnia. You’d just had a bad night’s sleep.
