Official Toyah: The Changeling Resurrection II

May 3rd, 2012

On Tuesday Toyah’s official website announced a new 12-date ‘Changeling Resurrection II’ UK tour for Autumn 2012, and also revealed a fantastic new tour poster.

The tour opens in Middlesbrough on 19th September and will also visit Sheffield, Birmingham, Glasgow, Manchester, Redhill, Telford, King’s Lynn, Bridport, St.Alban’s, London and Brighton. With brand new images created especially for the tour and material not performed in thirty years, this is a true celebration and re-interpretation of one of Toyah finest albums alongside hit singles.

The tour will wrap up on Saturday 3 November 2012 at Brighton Concorde 2 in a special show. The Changeling Resurrection II – Rewound & Extended will act as a finale to the tour at the same venue it began at in April.

Toyah said of the Spring tour: “I can’t believe how well received the  Changeling Resurrection has been!”

All Gigs: Toyah Announces The Changeling Resurrection II

May 3rd, 2012

The 11-date tour marks the 30th anniversary of legendary albums The Changeling and Warrior Rock – tickets on sale now/Friday 4th May

Toyah announces The Changeling Resurrection II UK Tour for Autumn 2012

Following the success of a sold-out spring tour mark three decades since the release of Toyah’s fourth album, The Changeling, the former punk pixie is taking the show back out on the road; this time coupling it with the anniversary of her second album of 1982, the live record Warrior Rock.

The new dates will see the diminutive star perform a ‘true celebration and re-interpretation’ of what is undoubtedly one of her finest works, alongside a collection of hit singles including I Want To Be Free and Thunder In The Mountains. In more recent times, Toyah has continued her highly credible career as a TV and film actress and made a number of high profile guest appearances. Thankfully, in recent years she has returned to her first love as a highly decorated punk pop star with a distinctly theatrical accent.

The Changeling Resurrection: News Briefs

May 2nd, 2012

• There is still one date of the ‘The Changeling Resurrection’ Spring tour to go, on Saturday in Bishop’s Stortford (tickets available here), with Toyah headlining ‘Stortfest 2012’, but already there is a whole new ‘Changeling Resurrection’ Autumn tour to look forward to, and even (very vague) murmurs of a similar 30th anniversary outing for ‘Love Is The Law/Rebel Run Tour’ in 2013.

• The tour has been a huge success, probably even more so than last year’s ‘From Sheep Farming To Anthem’, with incredible fan response via Facebook, You Tube and Twitter. Proof, if it was ever in any doubt, how loved ‘The Changeling’ album is.

• tenek on ‘The Changeling Resurrection’: For us the Toyah tour is now over sadly! Played to lots of people over the 5 nights and met many new friends. (Source: tenek @ Twitter) View all of our tenek news.

• Soley Mourning on ‘The Changeling Resurrection’: End of Tour: Well, first of all what a great tour – we’ve had a real blast and met some really cool people along the way. All of the gigs have been excellent and we have thoroughly enjoyed them. Shame its over now until next time. Thanks to everyone who came and saw us and thanks to Toyah and her crew for really making us feel welcome. Pictures to follow! (Source: soleymourning.com) View all of our Soley Mourning news.

Toyah News Briefs

April 30th, 2012

• A rare shot from a well-known 1978 Toyah photo session has appeared online. It was used as a “pin-up” in Issue 16 of the fanzine Ripped and Torn in January 1979. Photos from this session were most famously used on the cover of, and inside, ‘Record Mirror’, also in January 1979.

• Lärwi has compiled a great video to mark the 30th anniversary of ‘The Changeling’ and ‘Warrior Rock’, with music from 1982 and visuals from 2012. View it at You Tube.

• ‘Ieya’ is included in ‘The Epileptic Gibbon Podcast Music Show’ in their 77th podcast: “Episode 77: The Far Distant Dead”. View here.

Tommy’s Garage: Toyah Willcox, Pioneer of Punk + New Wave: She’s an incredible woman and artist. We Love Toyah!

• The Changeling Resurrection 2012′: Autumn Tour: Numerous dates for the Autumn tour are already all over the internet. No point in mentioning them here until they are officially confirmed. This one, however, at Rechabite Hall, Telford (a new venue), is worth a look. Their flyer is full of great bands.

Nottingham Contemporary: Derek Jarman Jubilee

April 30th, 2012

To mark what would have been director Derek Jarman’s 70th birthday, Nottingham Contemporary Arts Centre are showing Jubilee on 5th June at The Space.

Derek Jarman Jubilee (1978): Honouring the name behind the Jarman Award in what would have been his 70th year we are screening a film that many regard as Derek Jarman’s first masterpiece. In Jubilee, Queen Elizabeth I is transported to a bleak, broken Britain – where violence and anarchy reign and Buckingham Palace is a recording studio for punk musicians. Serving to upset and unnerve the conventional cinemagoer, Jubilee defines the confrontational abandon of punk cinema.

The Bridge: Toyah Talks Lady Gaga Comparisons

April 30th, 2012

Toyah was interviewed on ‘The Bridge 102.5’ on Saturday morning on The Nick Alatti Show.

Nick asked Toyah about Lady Gaga and that some have said she was the forerunner to her. Toyah said: “If you look at something in a compartment, nothing is new. Lady Gaga is completely different to what I’m doing, but I was doing it 30 years ago. I suppose I’ve always used image to go hand in hand with my music. It’s important to me. The music compliments the imagery as well. It’s something I’ve always been interested in. I don’t go onstage in a little black dress or a demure little cocktail dress, I’ve always gone onstage and made a statement”.

Toyah also said that ‘The Changeling Resurrection’ tour was structured with “four day breaks” to enable her to be able to sing the songs with her voice in peak condition.

• Not sure if Lady Gaga has been influenced by Toyah’s visuals, I’d say the creative team working with Katy Perry have plundered Toyah’s visuals far more. Has to be said, though, that the intro vocals to Gaga’s Government Hooker do sound more Toyah than Toyah.

Don’t Fall In Love (I Said)

April 27th, 2012

Time Flies! On this day, 27th April 1985 (yup), 27 years ago Toyah’s 15th single, and first ‘solo’ release, ‘Don’t Fall In Love (I Said)’ entered the UK singles chart. In retrospect, it’s a great pop song, written by Toyah and Simon Darlow, with an incredible b-side, ‘Snow Covers The Kiss’ (written by Toyah, Joel Bogen & Christopher Neil). Then there’s the unforgettable video. Personally, I can’t wait to hear it live on the ‘Minx: Trash & Tease 2015’ tour ;-))
