Sky News/Gem106/Orange: Hundreds Trapped in Cars Overnight

March 12th, 2013

Unfortunately Toyah didn’t make it to last night’s Hormonal Housewives performance in Brighton due to the snow causing tailbacks of up to 30 miles in Kent and Sussex.

Toyah tweeted several times from her car that she had been on the A23 a few miles from Brighton for more than six hours attempting to reach the theatre!

Overnight there have been numerous news reports, including Sky News, Gem 106 and Orange News, who mention Toyah being caught up in the chaos and also publish one of her tweets.

Hundreds of motorists have been trapped overnight in their cars for up to 10 hours after heavy snow brought traffic in Sussex to a standstill… The worst affected areas were the A23 between Crawley and Brighton and the M23 around Handcross Hill.

Cheryl Baker, the 1980s pop star with the Eurovision-winning group Bucks Fizz, was among those stuck on the roads as she tried to make her way along the A23 to Brighton to her children. In a series of furious tweets she said: “8 hours and still at a complete standstill. Bloody ridiculous. And they KNEW snow was coming. “Could have flown to NY by now. Was it the wrong kind of snow?”

Toyah Willcox, another 1980s pop star also found herself stranded on the A23 around 15 miles from Brighton tweeted: “Still on A23, not moved yet northbound is moving freely. 6 hours! Come on snow isn’t that bad.”

Maigret: Complete Collection: Newsy Bits & Pieces!

March 11th, 2013

Various recent press and reviews for the newly released Region 1 DVD box set of Maigret: The Complete Collection.

USA Today: DVD extra: Michael Gambon’s ‘Maigret’ out this week: New boxed set features complete collection of episodes from 1992 detective series ‘Maigret’ starring Michael Gambon (Harry Potter’s Hogwarts Headmaster Dumbledore).

Sentinel Source: Old ‘Maigret’ returns to DVD in new edition: “Maigret” has now been reissued in a boxed set of 4 DVDs holding the 12 episodes that comprise Series 1 and 2 of this wonderful police drama.

HK Film News: Maigret: Complete Collection – DVD Review: A woman’s body is discovered in the basement of an upperclass hotel in “Maigret and the Hotel Majestic”, which finds the detective getting physical with an irate prostitute (Toyah Willcox) and receiving some nasty scratches across one side of his face.

Blog Critics: DVD Review: Maigret, Complete Collection: There are some actors who have the ability to make everything they do seem effortless. Somehow they manage to make their characters seem like a natural extension of themselves.

DVD File: Maigret: The Complete Collection: DVD Review: Maigret: The Complete Collection isn’t must-see crime drama programming, but Gambon’s performance really is something special, so fans of the subgenre shouldn’t hesitate to give these discs a spin on their rental queues. A/V quality isn’t sensational (and there are no bonuses included at all), but from the right vantage point, these episodes can be pretty fun.

Slicing Up Eyeballs: Top 100 Albums of 1980

March 9th, 2013

Great news! ‘Sheep Farming in Barnet’ is included in Slicing Up Eyeballs‘ Top 100 Albums Of 1980 poll, announced online yesterday. The respected and influential music website – named after a lyric in the song ‘Debaser’ by the amazing PIXIES – is running a year-long “Best of the 80s” feature – an ambitious, year-by-year poll to determine just what were the best albums of each year of the 1980s.

‘Sheep Farming in Barnet’ places at #92 and is in the company of some truly incredible albums. Slicing Up Eyeballs’ poll for 1981 opens next week – Surely ‘Anthem’, with some support from Toyah’s online fans, will also figure?

• Coincidentally, I put together a ‘Sheep Farming in Barnet’ image earlier this week before I knew about the Slicing Up Eyeballs poll, Click above to view a larger version.

Liverpool Echo: Toyah Willcox and The Art Of Reinvention

March 9th, 2013

A new Toyah interview, by the Liverpool Echo, published yesterday.

Toyah Willcox on Hormonal Housewives and the art of reinvention

There was the feisty, whip-cracking heroine of Calamity Jane, then a femme fatale devil in high-heeled boots in Vampire’s Rock.

Now Toyah Willcox is on her way back to the Liverpool stage as one of a trio of ‘hormonal housewives’ in the show of the same name which makes three visits to Merseyside this spring.

“It’s comedy, and I think comedy is a fantastic art form,” she explains of her decision to join the show which is helmed by Ken Alexander, the Royal Court’s new artistic director. “Everyone thinks comedy is light-hearted and that’s it. It’s not – it has to be so well planned, you have to be setting it up at least a page before.

Toyah Newsy Bits & Pieces!

March 9th, 2013

• The News at toyahwillcox.com was updated yesterday, with info on Hormonal Housewives, Weekend Guitar Trio, the Breaking Through newsletter and Toyah’s live dates so far for 2013.

 • Something I always reiterate when posting news here about gigs has been advised officially: “If a gig doesn’t appear on the official GIGS page or on any of Toyah’s official webspaces then it means it has not been confirmed, so please bear this in mind when seeing online notices for gigs including Toyah in their line-up.” – Always best to double check or wait for official confirmation to avoid disappointment and/or losing money.

 • Toyah mentions in her March blog that there is a lot of press to come during the Hormonal Housewives tour over the next two-and-half months. She will also record an interview for BBC Radio 2’s Steve Wright Show and will guest on Channel 5’s The Wright Stuff after all.

 • More Hormonal Housewives tweets from Toyah this week, including yesterday: “Kings Lynn was fabulous! Great audience. 2nite sold out. agent can’t even get ticket“. Viist Toyah at Twitter.

 • The debut week of Hormonal Housewives’ shows finishes tonight with a performance at Leas Cliff Hall, Folkestone.

ESP Magazine: Hormonal Housewives

March 7th, 2013

It’s a mystery how women cope with their hormones but 80s star Toyah Willcox aims to have a laugh finding out.

The singer – she of the orange hair and wild make-up back in the day – turned actress some time ago and is now appearing in a great new sketch style show with Julie Coombe called Hormonal Housewives which should be a good giggle on Tuesday March 12.  Is your man more James May than Christian Grey? Then this is the show for you!

Toyah says – “Girls… don’t let anyone tell you otherwise, 40 is the new 20. I’m now 54 and life isn’t slowing down. I tour my band, do TV and travel the world. I’ve even played Billie Piper’s mother in Diary Of Call Girl.

Ipswich Star: Review: Hormonal Housewives with Toyah Willcox

March 7th, 2013

A review of the second show of the Hormonal Housewives tour. Praise for Toyah and the cast by the Ipswich Star.

Men were definitely in the minority at the Ipswich Regent.

There was an element of men-bashing, and with such a female-biased audience, it obviously went down well. But running deeper than that, most of the audience will have been able to pick at least one thread they could relate to, giving them a unity with the cast.

A great girls night out.
