Toyah Newsy Bits & Pieces!

March 9th, 2013

• The News at toyahwillcox.com was updated yesterday, with info on Hormonal Housewives, Weekend Guitar Trio, the Breaking Through newsletter and Toyah’s live dates so far for 2013.

 • Something I always reiterate when posting news here about gigs has been advised officially: “If a gig doesn’t appear on the official GIGS page or on any of Toyah’s official webspaces then it means it has not been confirmed, so please bear this in mind when seeing online notices for gigs including Toyah in their line-up.” – Always best to double check or wait for official confirmation to avoid disappointment and/or losing money.

 • Toyah mentions in her March blog that there is a lot of press to come during the Hormonal Housewives tour over the next two-and-half months. She will also record an interview for BBC Radio 2’s Steve Wright Show and will guest on Channel 5’s The Wright Stuff after all.

 • More Hormonal Housewives tweets from Toyah this week, including yesterday: “Kings Lynn was fabulous! Great audience. 2nite sold out. agent can’t even get ticket“. Viist Toyah at Twitter.

 • The debut week of Hormonal Housewives’ shows finishes tonight with a performance at Leas Cliff Hall, Folkestone.

Every little thing that you say or do… I couldn’t resist giving yesterday’s photo of Toyah as Madonna, circa Hung Up/Confessions On A Dancefloor, a bit of a makeover. Time goes by, so slowly! Click to zoom!

• Toyah has tweeted about the first night of Hormonal Housewives: “An exceptionally good First night. Great audience, great show. WOW! Loving it“. Toyah fan Jacqui Keeler saw the show last night in Bromley and loved it, saying Toyah is full of energy.

Hormonal Housewives second show is tonight at the Ipswich Regent Theatre.

PR Newswire: Toyah is mentioned (as a supporter of previous BUAV campaigns) in this press release today: Joanna Lumley, Twiggy, Jenny Seagrove, Chrissie Hynde and Kimberly Wyatt Join Cruelty Free International to Celebrate the End of Animal Cosmetics Testing in Europe

• Toyah fan Vanessa has named her gorgeous new goat after one of her favourite female singers. The newly christened Toyah not only now shares the same name but also has very similar looking Changeling horns too. (Thanks to Vanessa)

Ramblings is now available to listen to a BBC iPlayer for the next week, and is also downloadable as a podcast for the next 30 days. Toyah talks to, and walks with, Clare Balding in Croome Par, Worcestershire, chatting about her health, childhood and family life, how her career began and future plans. A great interview. It’s also repeated on BBC Radio 4 on Saturday at 6am.

• Lots of great feedback on Twitter for Ramblings: “Always love Ramblings but esp enjoying today’s with the resilient Toyah. Inspiring for us who are also recovering from injury“, “Just heard lovely Toyah on Ramblings with claire Balding” and “Just listened to Clare Balding taking to Toyah Willcox on Ramblings – fabulous interview” are just a few of the comments.

• As mentioned a couple of times last week, Toyah guested on In Conversation with Steve Allen on LBC yesterday morning. The half-hour programme is available to listen to as a podcast from the radio station’s website. (NB. There is a charge to download LBCs podcasts – full info at their website)

• Toyah is supporting “Acupuncture Awareness Week”, which began today and runs until 3rd March. There have already been a number of recent Toyah interviews and articles focusing on this, lots of tweets too over the last few days linking to her video interview, and no doubt there will be more over the next seven days.

Hull Daily Mail: How acupuncture has helped Toyah finally get a good night’s sleep: Toyah Willcox has tried everything from sleeping pills to herbal remedies to enjoy what many of us take for granted – a normal night’s sleep. “When I was young I just regarded not sleeping as a fantastic way to pack more into my days. I always reasoned that life’s so short, it seemed crazy to waste it sleeping,” she says.

Weekend: Toyah tweeted a photo of the cutest rabbit in Britain on Monday… who just happens to be perusing Gloucestershire Echo’s ‘Weekend’ supplement from Saturday, with Toyah on the cover!

• Saffron cites Toyah as an influence again in another new interview: Spark Sunderland: Republica: Back & Ready To Go: “Singers like Toyah and Siouxsie and the Banshees, they’re quite individual front women you know. They were like the first of their kind; their look the way they sang and the lyrics.”

Wales Online: Hannah Jones: There’s nothing wrong with dyeing your hair: Once upon a time, I copied Toyah Willcox. I went about pretending to have a lisp – I don’t think Ebbw Vale was ready for a 10-year-old lumper prancing around in a home-made ra-ra skirt and answering “It’s A Mystery” whenever I was asked a question. The best thing about my Toyah years, though, was discovering the joys of back-combing and bleach.

This is Gloucestershire: A new Toyah interview was included in the Gloucestershire Echo’s ‘Weekend’ magazine on Saturday: Singer and actress Toyah Willcox tells us how she finally managed to beat her insomnia. (Only available in the magazine)

The Guardian: From Rock’s Backpages: Toyah is namechecked in a newly published retro article at ‘The Guardian’: Neil Tennant on the 1985 Brits – a classic feature from the vaults: The Brits are coming! We’re marking the annual bunfest by reliving Neil Tennant’s visit to the 1985 ceremony for Smash Hits, courtesy of Rock’s Backpages – the world’s leading archive of vintage music journalism… Photographers are in a frenzy in the foyer snapping anyone remotely famous, like Bob Geldof and Paula Yates, Howard and Jan Jones, Meat Loaf, Toyah …

The Brit Awards: Check out Toyah in the “History” section of The Brits website.

Media Molecule: On Tuesday evening Google News were listing that over 100 online articles were currently mentioning Toyah and ‘It’s A Mystery’ in relation to the Media Molecule teaser game page. Even the IMDb got in on the action.

Birmingham Post: Star names of stage and screen pay tribute to 100-year-old Birmingham Rep – Another press report on the Birmingham Rep’s Centenary.

Media Molecule/It’s A Mystery: Newsy Bits!

February 12th, 2013

Who would have thought a few days ago that ‘It’s A Mystery’ would be being mentioned all over the internet this week? Media Molecule using Toyah’s, second, Top Of The Pops appearance from 1981 on their “teaser” page for a new, highly anticipated, game project has led to mention of the song, and Toyah going sorta “viral”. Here are a few more of the many websites reporting the story:

Gamezone: The new project is listed as “?”, and the dedicated page contains a YouTube video of Toyah Willcox singing “It’s a Mystery.” Attempting to scour the source code for any hints, Media Molecule has cleverly teased the keywords: “what are we doing at the moment, exactly, mystery, new game, how awesome will it be?, who knows.”

Gameranx: In place of further information about what the game entails (or whether it’s a game or not at all), right now all they’ve posted is a video of early 80s UK New Wave artist Toyah singing her song “It’s A Mystery” on a classic episode of Top Of The Pops.

Video Gamer: Click through to the game and you are greeted with a YouTube embed of Toyah Wilcox hit ‘”It’s a Mystery”. It sure is.

Playstation Universe: The developer behind the critically-acclaimed LittleBigPlanet series has seemingly posted up a teaser for a new project. Media Molecule’s official website notably includes a ‘?’ among its list of games, with the page linking to a clip from Toyah’s ‘It’s a Mystery.’ No further information is given.

Warp Zoned: The list of games on the developer’s website includes their previous titles as well as a question mark. The question mark links to the music video for “It’s A Mystery,” a minor hit for the UK band Toyah in 1981. Sadly, the lyrics aren’t much help: It’s a mystery, oh, it’s a mystery, I’m still searching for a clue, It’s a mystery to me, A shot in the dark, The big question mark in history, Is it a mystery to you? (minor hit? It was huge Warped Zone ;))

Victoria & Albert Museum: Jubilee @ The V&A: A fantastic photo of Jordan is included in the prestigious museum’s collection.

Penny Black Music: Cheek of Her: Megaphonic EP: Toyah is mentioned in this new review… There are even spoken lyrics over what could be the harmonies of a choir of flouncy girls lead by the love child of Siouxsie Sioux and Toyah Willcox.

Unofficial Toyah Top 20 2103: The results of the first part of James and Lärwi’s Toyah Song Poll are in, and the second part is now online. Toyah’s full back catalogue, excluding collaborations, was included and has been voted down to a final 28. 100 people participated in the fun poll so it’s hardly definitive but still interesting (and thanks to James for taking the time to organise it all). Vote here.

First-Thoughts: A huge forum thread “discussing” Patsy Kensit, which over the last six weeks also includes Weight Watchers, Toyah and ‘Sensational’. To save you the bother of trawling through the, seemingly endless, posts I’ve cherrypicked the best one :) – “Giving serious thought to joining Weight Watchers. Mostly because I want to dance to Toyah’s Sensational with Patsy Kensit.”

• It’s the final couple of days of, the first part of, James and Lärwi’s Toyah Song Poll. Voting closes tomorrow so there’s still time to get involved. The top two from each album will then be voted on to find fans current favourite song. It’s not going to be a Top 50 as I, incorrectly, previously mentioned, more likely to be either a Top 20 or 15! Vote here.

Entertainment Focus: Hormonal Housewives returns to Woking: Hormonal Housewives is returning to Woking’s New Victoria Theatre for one night only on Monday 18th March. Toyah Willcox and Julie Coombe star in the hilarious show which will features all-new sketches and all the best bits from the successful 2012 tour. Written by Julie and her husband John McIsaac, Hormonal Housewives looks at everything that makes today’s women tick…

You Tube: Two clips of Toyah, possibly from around 2008, in fine voice playing It’s A Mystery and I Want To Be Free with The Subs have just been uploaded to ‘You Tube’. These clips are filmed from various angles and edited professionally but I’m not sure where they originate from.

Supporting Acupuncture Awareness Week is actress and singer Toyah Willcox who, like many others, feels that acupuncture has made a huge impact to her life. View an article on this here.

BBC Hereford & Worcester: Toyah Willcox talks about living in Pershore: The star of stage and screen talks passionately about her Worcestershire hometown. She says she’s flattered to see a sudden surge in the number of younger people coming to her gigs after Florence & The Machine and Marina & The Diamonds cited her as a major influence. This radio interview with Toyah, from September 2010, was added to the ‘BBC H&W News’ page yesterday.

Valentine Entertainments: The Karnival of Kitsch!: Toyah is mentioned in Andi Fragg’s bio on this site’s festival line-up page. (they also use one of Andi’s banners that I designed :))

2-Toyah: The idea of a Toyah “tribute” act/band is possibly a good one, especially as there is so much great music and  imagery to pay homage to. I’m not sure advertising for auditionees on Gumtree is the best way to go about it. Who knows!

Official Toyah: Newsy Bits

Toyah Newsy Bits & Pieces!

February 2nd, 2013

• The first of the BBC’s two-part Queens Of British Pop series airs again tonight on BBC Four at 11pm. Toyah was, inexplicably, left out of the television series when it first aired in March 2009. Dreamscape and other fans were suitably outraged at the time. However an online vote after the series aired placed her 7th in the BBC Queens Of British Pop poll: 1. Kate Bush, 2. Annie Lennox, 3. Kim Wilde, 4. Kylie Minogue, 5. Dusty Springfield, 6. Leona Lewis, 7. Toyah, 8. Geri Halliwell, 9. Siouxsie Sioux, 10. Kirsty MacColl. It’s an interesting programme all the same, featuring Siouxsie, Kate Bush,  Dusty Springfield and Marianne Faithfull, among others, in this first part, which will be available to watch at BBC iPlayer post broadcast.

Twitter: Toyah tweeted yesterday that “”My guilty pleasure has arrived in the post…rabbiting on magazine….heaven

King’s Heath Walk Of Stars: Two new plaques will be joining Toyah on the King’s Heath Walk Of Fame later this year. The Birmingham Post reports that the organisers are “creating new plaques for Fuzzbox’s Jo Dunne and The Move guitarist Trevor Burton following on from the first last year for Kings Heath-born Toyah Willcox.”

Total Bliss: Define Colour: It’s hard to imagine a world without hair color… This photo feature includes a great shot of “redhead” Toyah from Parkinson in 1981 – the one that was also used in a hairstyles article in Vogue last year.

Worcestershire Life: 2012 Christmas Quiz Answers: A question about Toyah was included in this festive quiz and the answers have now been revealed… and may just surprise you! 46. Who is Worcestershire actress Toyah Willcox married to? a) Robert Plant.

NME: Elton John’s Top 10 Batshit Crazy Concert Outfits: Toyah Willcox called – she wants her hair back.

Absolute 80s Radio: ‘It’s A Mystery’ has just been played this afternoon on AR. Apparently the ‘I Want To Be Free’ video is also being shown a lot on Vintage TV at the moment. (Thanks Michael)

The Visitors: No, not ABBA’s 1981 album… The hits to Dreamscape last night and this morning have went through the roof. Always great news when the site is busy, though this time a large chuck of the visitors have arrived after searching for “wagon’s den geordie shore charlotte” or similar!!

• Toyah, photographed at RTÉ in Dublin, last night guesting on Katherine Lynch’s Wagon’s Den. I think this airs this Thursday at 10.30pm on RTÉ 2, and will no doubt eventually appear on You Tube. There’s a little more info on Wagon’s Den in our previous post here. (Photo © Contact Music – View the full version at their website)

Quadrophenia Live: It was announced yesterday that The Who will play the full Quadrophenia album on their forthcoming UK and Ireland arena tour. This was reported all over the internet and many of the articles included a namecheck for Toyah: Metro, NME, Contact Music.

Toyah on TV: While on the subject of Quadrophenia, just a reminder that the film airs again tonight. Full details here.

I Am Still Ashley Elsdon: Still Buying Vinyl: There are a handful of tracks that are on a list, the kind of list you know somehow you’ll never get to the end of. For me it’s a list of tracks I had once and now I’ve no idea where they are, so I have to get them again. This EP from Toyah is one. It has a track on it called Urban Tribesman, which I really loved, but it just doesn’t seem to be available on download or on a CD anywhere.

The Toyah Top 50 (Unofficial): In 2008 Toyah’s Official Website published the Toyah Top 50 to mark Toyah’s 50th birthday (view those results here). Five years later, just for fun and completely unofficial, Larwi and James at Facebook are doing something similar. Click here for more info and to take part. (Thanks to James Armstrong & Lärwi)

Texas Toyah Potatoes!: Toyah’s been unpacking and tweeted a great photo from her travels yesterday: “Finally unpacking from changeling tour & found this TOYAH POTATO sack from texas!!!!! Excellent!” (PS. How cute is WilyFred the rabbit?)

25th Anniversary Gig: 10 years ago Toyah played an amazing concert at the Mean Fiddler, London in celebration of 25 years of being a live performer. I’d thought no footage from this had ever been made available. Until yesterday when Damon posted this. No sound and only 21 seconds but still great to see even a teeny weeny bit of film from that fantastic night. (Thanks to Damon King)

The Electricity Club: An Interview With Republica’s Saffron: A couple of mentions for Toyah in this new interview, including Saffron citing Toyah as an influence: Fronted by the vivacious Saffron, their rousing techno punk rock were like Toyah fronting New Order… Who were your own influences as a singer/performer? My main influences as a singer and performer range from Toyah Willcox, Siouxsie Sioux, Grace Jones to Stevie Nicks, Kate Bush and David Bowie. (Photo © Mark Evans)

Grolsch Film Works: Top 10 | Punks on Film: 9. Jubilee (Derek Jarman, 1978): Perhaps the quintessential British punk film (Jarman must be one of its most credible “punk” directors), Jubilee features a host of punk stars of the period – from Toyah to Adam Ant, and an anarchic tone, which combined with the location shooting of urban decay and economic depression, captured the spirit of the times.

Walker Art Centre (Minneapolis): Expanding The Frame: Tribute to Experimentation: The tribute to Derek Jarman kicks off with the area premiere of Isaac Julien’s touching documentary about the filmmaker, Derek, on Friday February 20, and includes several of the filmmaker’s most well-known films, including Jubilee (February 21), Caravaggio (February 21), Sebastiane (February 22), and a selection of the director’s music films (February 26).

Bard Of Ely: Why dyeing your hair with crazy colour hair dyes is a fun thing to do: Singer, actress and TV personality Toyah Willcox, who came to fame with her hit songs back in the 1970s Punk and New Wave scene is another celebrity who has often dyed her hair in flamboyant colours.

• The new video for Toyah’s Sensational has just been released. Here is another clip featuring the song, uploaded to You Tube a couple of years ago, featuring footage from The Sarah Jane Adventures. There’s also a SJA video set to It’s A Mystery, and a Doctor Who one too!

Dangerous Minds: Punk Rock, Now More Than Ever: The Gospel According To Henry Rollins And Various Old Punks: I’m no Henry Rollins fan but when he’s good he can be very good, as he is in this short piece on punk rock, Is Punk Back From The Dead?, that was broadcast on British TV recently. The clip also includes some thoughts on punk from John Holmstrom, Tony James (Generation X), Mark Perry (Sniffin’ Glue) and Toyah Willcox. The consensus: punk now more than ever!

Pun Based Name: Copy? Compliment? Coincidence?: For whatever reason, lots of album covers seem to pay tribute to lots of other ones… 15. Kate Bush – Never For Ever (EMI, 1980) & Toyah – Anthem (Safari, 1981): Anthem was probably Toyah’s best album; a nice mix of post-punk and new wave/synth pop influences.

Leamington Courier: Family fun, theatre, comedy and music live in Leamington: Toyah Willcox will star in Hormonal Housewives, a comedy evening of sketches covering what makes women tick – or ticked off.

In Concert 1981/Rebel Run Tour 1983: Low quality, but still really good, fan radio and concert recordings of War Boys, Neon Womb and I Explode at You Tube.

How You Feel: Learning To Love British Film: Jubilee: Derek Jarman doesn’t usually pull too many miseryguts Brit flick clichés, and in his punk outing Jubilee – actually one of the only films about punk made in the brief time punk wasn’t dead – he should be even more innovative and outrageous than usual.

Arran Art: An (Odd) Day in the Dark: The Tempest will be screened at Arran’s free mini-film festival next month (Saturday 2nd February). 3.15-4.45pm – The Tempest: Derek Jarman’s 1979 idiosyncratic adaptation of Shakespeare’s Tempest with Toyah Willcox as Miranda. Forget any notions of worthiness – this film challenges the idea of ‘faithful’ literary adaptation and celebrates the visual magic of cinema as thoroughly as the magical arts of Prospero.

T-Shirts: Fancy a Toyah-related t-shirt? ‘WeAdmire.net’ have Jubilee and Quadrophenia apparel for sale.

Steve Lamacq’s Roundtable: The edition of Roundtable from ‘BBC 6Music’ in which Toyah was a guest is available to listen to/download via ‘Castroller’. This originally aired in November 2012.

Folkestone People: Hormonal Housewives come to Leas Cliff Hall: Eighties pop star Toyah Willcox is to appear in sketch show Hormonal Housewives, showing at Leas Cliff Hall later this year.

Morning Star: Culture: Heathcote Williams – The Queen of Diamonds: Toyah’s co-star in The Tempest.

• A full transcript of Bev Meets… Toyah Willcox, which aired a couple of times over Christmas on ‘BBC WM’, is now available at the really great ‘Toyah Willcox Interview Archive’.

Love Me: One of my favourite Toyah songs. From the magnificent ‘The Blue Meaning’. I never thought I’d hear someone covering it but littletroll has done just that. Listen at Soundcloud.

January 17th, 2013

• Toyah’s appearance on last night’s Channel 4 News saw an increase in visitors to Dreamscape, certainly our busiest day for a while. Unfortunately a high-profile appearance also brings out the keypad warriors of Twitter, questioning whether Toyah was “punk”. There’s something slightly hilarious about people associated with punk nitpicking about who was more punk! Wasn’t that the sort of petty, elitist, judgemental way of thinking punk was fighting against?

You Tube: Fart For Your Rights: Toyah tweeted on Monday: “Take note, my hubby’s response to no royalty payments“.

You TubeIt’s A Mystery and I Want To Be Free – Acoustic covers of two Toyah classics by Danny McEvoy.

This is Sussex: Go on and have a bit of a laugh this year: The Hormonal Housewives are back, and this time they mean business.

WS County Times: Comedy classics at the Hawth: The Hormonal Housewives are back, plus this time Toyah Willcox takes on a leading role.
