PAC Photography: Toyah/The Humans

April 26th, 2012

‘PAC Photography’, who will be at The Robin, Wolverhampton this Saturday to photograph Toyah’s ‘Changeling Resurrection’ gig, have an excellent selection of archive photos of Toyah and The Humans at their website.

The website includes photos of Toyah from the ‘From Sheep Farming To Anthem’ gig at the Slade Rooms, Wolverhampton last October and photos from two of The Humans concerts, at The Public, West Bromwich and HMV Institute, Birmingham, both also from last October. (access via: View your pictures – Live Music)

There are also photos taken at The Power of Three film premiere at the Everyman Theatre in Hampstead, London in November last year. (access via: View your pictures – events)

So So Gay: Blue To Headline Blackpool Pride 2012. Toyah is also mentioned in this article published today.

• Toyah Montaging: I’ve, quite literally, thrown together a couple of Toyah video montages. At The Rainbow and some career clips. I’d love to do a more professional and substantial career montage at some point, with lots of interview and music clips, almost like a documentary type retrospective.

Toyah on TV: Rajan And His Evil Hypnotists TONIGHT!

April 25th, 2012

Just a reminder that Rajan And His Evil Hypnotists, which originally aired on E4 in 2005, is repeated tonight.

Rajan And His Evil Hypnotists: 4Music
Wed 25th April: 11.35pm

Rajan and his evil team make a grown man petrified of Santa Claus, while 80s pop star Toyah has a most unusual chat show experience – with no idea that her host is a hypnotised member of the public. Other trance subjects drink vinegar, pour ice down their trousers, arrest the over-60s for underage drinking, and regress to being a three-year-old child in a supermarket.

Classic Toyah: ‘It’s A Mystery’ @ You Tube

April 24th, 2012

Yes ‘It’s A Mystery’ has possibly been uploaded to ‘You Tube’ more times than is necessary but this addition today is quite cool. The video clip looks great thanks to a clever montage of photos and clips from one of the Top Of The Pops appearances. Click below to view.

Toyah Timeline | 1979: Look! Hear! (Series One)

April 24th, 2012

Toyah was one of a bunch of presenters of Look! Hear! for three series between 1979 and 1981. The programme, covering music and the arts in The Midlands, was made at BBC Pebble Mill and gave bands like Duran Duran, The Beat and The Selector their first tv exposure.

The first series of Look! Hear! aired weekly in early 1979. Chris Phipps, Ann Butler, Liz Cotton and John Holmes, who were all ‘Radio Wolverhampton’ DJs, were the other presenters.

Toyah News Briefs

April 24th, 2012

• As expected with a sold out London gig, a lot of footage has been uploaded to ‘You Tube’ over the last couple of days. Check out Steve Day’s, up close and personal, Warrior Rock. It has the distinction of being the very first clip made available online, from a gig that is already being compared to some of the legendary Toyah concerts.

The Birmingham Press: What’s On At The Robin: On Saturday there’s the return of eighties icon Toyah, who since her chart days has honed her act into a top-line live performance. She’ll be celebrating the thirtieth anniversary of her influential album The Changeling, which itself spawned the live follow-up Warrior Rock. There are four support acts and the fun starts at 7pm. Tickets £19.50,

Lost Turntable: Tony Banks’ Soundtracks: In 1984 he composed the score for a low-budget sci-fi flick called Lorca And The Outlaws (it was released as Starship on VHS). In addition to the score, he also composed the original songs, “You Call This Victory” featuring vocalist Jim Diamond and “Lion of Symmetry” featuring vocals by the amazing Toyah Willcox.

Toyah Timeline | 1979: The Resurrection Tour

April 24th, 2012

Toyah made her first live appearance on New Year’s Eve 1977, fronting Ninth Illusion in Swiss Cottage, London. There were only two gigs under this name. Rechristened TOYAH, their first gig was at Finchley Christ College Disco in April 1978, followed by a string of dates through the rest of that year. The debut TOYAH tour was ‘The Resurrection ’79 Tour’, starting on 27th March 1979, at London Dingwalls, playing 12 dates throughout the UK in March and April. This tour visited some legendary live venues: Factory, Manchester, Eric’s in Liverpool, Tiffany’s in Edinburgh and Music Machine, Camden. The line up was: Toyah (Vocals), Joel Bogen (Guitar), Mark Henry (Bass), Steve Bray (Drums), Pete Bush (Keyboards). (Thanks to toyahwillcox.com)

Toyah News Briefs

April 24th, 2012

Prosceneium: Calamity Jane: This set for Calamity Jane was originally built for the highly acclaimed professional tour starring Toyah Willcox.

• A new ‘Blackpool Pride 2012’ flyer has been released, with Toyah included. View it here.

Time Out London: Time Out Says: Last year she celebrated the thirtieth anniversary of her most successful album ‘Anthem’ and tonight she’ll be celebrating 30 years since the release of her second best-selling LP, ‘The Changeling’. Toyah Timeline | 1979(?): Little Girls Don’t

April 23rd, 2012

Timeline wise this one is slightly tricky. Little Girls Don’t, made by ‘ITV Playhouse’, looks like it could have been filmed in either 1977 or ’78, but the credited date on the programme is 1980. To confuse matters more this didn’t air until March 1981. I’m plonking it in 1979 for now…

A Resurrection For ‘The Changeling Resurrection’

April 23rd, 2012

As I’ve received so many photos from the first three ‘Changeling Resurrection’ gigs the only sensible option is to collect them together, all in the one place. Like this. So… I’m going to add a dedicated TCR page at Dreamscape’s Gallery: A resurrection for The Resurrection! It’ll probably take a few days to complete. Stay tuned for a preview of some of Damon’s photos…

Changeling Resurrection: Toyah Takes London… into Nightflight

April 22nd, 2012

Andrew York’s stunning art, celebrating ‘The Changeling Resurrection 2012’ playing London (it’s sold out dontcha know!). Andrew generously created this Toyah masterpiece especially for Falling To Earth, helping us to mark the occasion in style! Toyah tweeted late this afternoon: “At last! At bush hall! Very busy. There’s 2 film crews in tonite. Can’t wait 2 rock“. Fitting that, the incredible, ‘The Changeling’ is finally being celebrated as it always should have been.

This evening, as Londoners mark the album’s 30th with Toyah, I’ll be consoling myself by ploughing through my new Doctor Who: Revisitations 2 box set (a pressie from a brilliant mate – Thanks Mark!). Please click above to view a larger version of the “Toyah Takes London” art, and here for a version without text. (Thanks again to, the amazingly talented, Andrew and to Dean Stockings/Sean Chapman for the wonderful photo/imagery • Original photo © Toyah Willcox/Dean Stockings | Art by Andrew York • View more from the shoot at toyahwillcox.com)
