My Vintage: Toyah’s Final Song Choice

April 7th, 2012

Toyah’s final song choice from My Vintage, ‘The Lovecats’ by The Cure.

“My career has spanned many decades. My first success with music actually started in the late Seventies when I started to top the Indie Chart. I was actually number one on the first Indie charts for 12 months. Then, in 1981 I started to have mainstream hits, and the interesting thing about “Eighties” music, it’s perceived as quite popularist but there were some artists around in the Eighties who were incredibly diverse…”

My Vintage: Toyah Talks U2

April 4th, 2012

Toyah’s 11th song choice from My Vintage, ‘Even Better Than The Real Thing’.

“I have never seen this band live. I would love to see them live, but I’m kind of put off by the fact that they are so mega, they are so big, they are the biggest band in the world. I think still, Coldplay might be about to overtake them. I’ve always loved their music. I think they’ve always released great albums that make you want to dance, they make you want to put your hands in the air…”

My Vintage: Toyah Talks Tears For Fears

March 28th, 2012

Toyah’s 10th song choice from My Vintage, ‘Mad World’. “I don’t think I’m alone in making the mistake I made with this song when I asked a member of REM when they released ‘Mad World’. They very kindly pointed out it was Tears For Fears.

When the film Donnie Darko came out, which I sat through. It’s a pretty hard film to sit through, and then ‘Mad World’ came up at the end, and it was so potent and powerful. Suddenly that song was everywhere, and it had relevance and meaning…”

My Vintage: Toyah Talks ‘Stay’

March 23rd, 2012

Toyah’s ninth song choice from My Vintage, ‘Stay’.

“1992 was not the greatest year of my life I have to say. It was a year of massive changes and challenges. Deeply personal things going on, and when I first heard this song it actually made me burst into tears, because this song, I think, encapsulates how women feel about letting go of something. It encapsulates how women feel so intensly connected… to a person, and things in their lives. I don’t think I’m wrong in saying this and I don’t think I’m sexist in saying this…”

My Vintage: Toyah Talks Lou

March 21st, 2012

Toyah’s eighth song choice from My Vintage, ‘Walk On The Wild Side’.

“When I was about 14 I was just so rebellious, you just could not contain me whatsoever. I was still going to school because my mother drove me to school every day, and then they kind of locked the gates so I couldn’t get out. In the weekends my parents allowed my brother and myself relative freedom, and we had a caravan in Worcestershire, and my brother, who was older than me, could drive at this time so at midnight we’d drive off, and we’d go and see midnight movies in Worcestershire…”

My Vintage: Toyah Talks Kate

March 20th, 2012

Toyah’s seventh song choice from My Vintage, ‘Running Up That Hill’.

“I feel really lucky to be able to say to you I want to put this next artist into My Vintage because she is a friend.

She’s the most delightful woman, and she is a total inspiration and a great role model. I have loved her work since I first heard ‘Wuthering Heights’ when I was 19, listening to the radio and I stopped in a stunned silence as I listened to her voice. It was breathtaking and she has continued to be breathtaking every decade ever since…”
