The Irish News: Toyah Interview

March 30th, 2019

irishnews19aToyah Willcox: The things that have remained constant are originality and energy

Almost 40 years after Toyah Willcox first appeared on Top Of The Pops, the ever-busy Birmingham-born performer is set to join other stars of the 80s at the Forever Young festival in Co Kildare this summer. Lorraine Wylie caught up with her

Toyah Willcox is a woman of many talents, proving her skill as an actress, producer, author, singer and songwriter in the past four decades. But for diehard music fans, she is best known as the ‘princess of punk’.

Between 1979 and 1981 her band Toyah released their first three studio albums, Sheep Farming in Barnet, The Blue Meaning and Anthem; it was the latter that truly launched Willcox into the spotlight and, as well as spawning hits such as I Want To Be Free and It’s A Mystery, earned her a gold disc.

This summer, fans will have an opportunity to hear material from Willcox’s most recent album, In The Court Of The Crimson Queen, when she joins a host of other stars of her era at the Forever Young Festival in Co Kildare. With that Irish visit in the pipeline and a British tour about to kick off, I caught up with the star who told me why, at 60, she still loves performing and what inspires her music today.

irishnews19b

“I love doing live festivals,” she said. “The summer has arrived, the weather is great and you’re performing outside. It’s a fabulous way to communicate your music. I’m very much looking forward to coming to Ireland. There’s such a strong cultural identity there and I get such a warm welcome. My music is very much for my audiences who have travelled with me for the past 42 years.

“Although, I say that but when I look out at my audiences, they’re all under the age of 25. Today, I’m writing from the perspective of my age. I’m not interested in a historic perspective. My lyrics are a nod to things I experience at this age.”

Edinburgh Evening News: Crimson Queen Review

March 22nd, 2019

eencqr19aLiam Rudden: Dancing in the hurricane with the Crimson Queen

When Toyah Willcox sings that she danced in the hurricane, drums driving a hypnotic rhythm in the background, you can just picture the scene.

So opens In The Court of The Crimson Queen, her new studio album, reimagined from an earlier release of the same name with five brand new tracks added, including the opener of Act I, Dance In The Hurricane. And what an opener it is. Raw, emotional and with an entrancing narrative, this old-school floor filler finds the singer still on the top of her game. With an irresistible beat and simple but effective hook, Toyah’s message remains as simple and clear as it has always been Be Loud, Be Heard, Be Proud.

Split into two acts – Act I has eight tracks, Act II another seven – In The Court of The Crimson Queen is the result of a collaboration with co-writer and producer Simon Darlow, he also plays all the instruments. The title, a nod to her husband, King Crimson’s Robert Fripp.

Willcox and Darlow first wrote together as far back as 1978 and influences of their previous hits Rebel Run and Don’t Fall In Love hover like ghosts throughout this release. The second track of Act I, Sensational, is a punchy uplifting bundle of joy that, like Dance In The Hurricane, is sure to become an anthem in its own right, if it hasn’t already.

crimsonqueen19k‘CRIMSON QUEEN’ RE-IMAGINED AS A DOUBLE ALBUM OUT 12 APRIL

Toyah will release a revelatory new studio reworking of her album In The Court Of The Crimson Queen on 12 April 2019. Written and arranged by Toyah Willcox and Simon Darlow, In The Court Of The Crimson Queen has been newly re-mixed and remastered and is released as a double CD package and digital. This release further cements Toyah’s status as an iconic name of British rock and pop and features five additional new tracks.

PRE-ORDER THE ALBUM NOW

In The Court Of The Crimson Queen sees Toyah continuing to hold court with a set of beautifully crafted songs, thought provoking lyrics and a rally cry to forever living life out loud, proud and heard. The album’s 15 tracks explore life, love, empowerment and wonderment.

Several of the album’s songs have been previewed live in recent Toyah concert tours or featured on (now deleted) fan-only releases. Toyah and Simon Darlow have been developing new songs and perfecting this body of work which is now re-imagined as a double album. In The Court Of The Crimson Queen presents a collection of finely honed songcraft, killer hooks and two lifetimes of performing, writing and producing music.

crimsonqueen19l

Opener Dance In The Hurricane is an epic ode to defiantly walking your own path through life with drumming to die for. Lead single Sensational encourages shining a light on the beauty and courage in others, reminding our children and loved ones to unlock their invincibility and strength.  Telepathic Lover reaches out like a snaking, siren’s call to both listener and the lyric’s physically absent lover in a groove-laden command to “come alive”. Our Hearts Still Beat (written for the film In Extremis) and Legacy chart the intense journeys love can take across generations and dimensions. Latex Messiah and Come invite everyone’s inner rebel and unashamed self-expression to be unleashed in their energetic tour de force. Who Let The Beast Out was premiered at London Scoop’s 2016 outdoor musical Crime and Punishment which featured thirteen of Toyah & Darlow’s songs.

Toyah will perform material from the new album live on tour throughout 2019 with over 50 confirmed dates including a Scottish tour in April, summer festivals including stops in Dublin, Bali and Belgium, and an autumn/winter tour of major UK cities. Simon will be joining Toyah on stage at some of these events.

March 8th, 2019

sdedition19cToyah Willcox / In The Court of the Crimson Queen 2CD deluxe edition

2CD deluxe • Four new tracks • Remixed • Ltd signed exclusive

UK punk/pop legend Toyah Willcox will release a two-CD deluxe edition of her 2008 album In The Court of the Crimson Queen in April.

The album has been completely remixed by Toyah’s producer and longtime writing partner Simon Darlow (his writing credits include Buggles & Grace Jones‘ ‘Slave to the Rhythm’) and features new instrumentation, including additional keyboards and live drums to replace the programmed rhythms of past editions.

This new deluxe edition also features four brand new songs (in a resequenced track listing) including a new opener, in the stomping ‘Dance in the Hurricane’ and ‘Our Hearts Still Beat’, an epic and emotional closer.

The album’s title is of course a reference to King Crimon‘s 1969 debut and of course Toyah is married to the band’s guitarist Robert Fripp! This deluxe set features new artwork and is presented as a digipak with a 24-page booklet. For the exclusive edition (only available via Amazon UK) 1000 are signed by both Toyah and Simon Darlow.
