Some rare-ish footage of Toyah at the British Rock & Pop Awards 1983 has just been uploaded to You Tube. Toyah is presenting Duran Duran’s Simon Le Bon with the award for Best Male Vocalist of 1982. This was the year Toyah starred in Trafford Tanzi at London’s Mermaid Theatre, filmed The Ebony Tower in France with Laurence Olivier for ITV, and released the sublime Love Is The Law album. Toyah on The One Show earlier this evening. Recreating the iconic Thunder In The Mountains hair and make-up, with the help of make-up artist Sean Chapman and hairdresser Michael Douglas. Toyah also made a surprise appearance live on the programme, joining guests Simon Le Bon and John Taylor of Duran Duran on the sofa. Watch the programme at BBC iPlayer.
Birmingham’s well known landmarks: But for a city so linked to heavy metal, many sounds have left its clubs to find fans aroud the globe. In the 1980s in particular, Birmingham bands were among the biggest around. While Toyah found fame in post-punk pop, UB40 were at the forefront of British reggae and Duran Duran became the biggest band on the planet.
Toyah co-presented Look! Hear! for ‘BBC Midlands’ for three series between 1979 and 1981. The programme covered music and the arts in The Midlands and was made at BBC Pebble Mill studios.
