Lifestyle Magazine: What’s The Mystery? – Read Online

September 6th, 2012

The issue of ‘Lifestyle’ magazine mentioned a few days ago, with Toyah as the cover star, is now available to read online in digital format.

The entertainment and arts publication is available to buy in the North East of England region.

As well as being the undisputed Queen of Punk, Toyah Willcox is also a celebrated actress and has played everybody from Mad, in punk film Jubilee, to Calamity Jane. Nicolle Thompson chatted to the talented chameleon about her hometown, growing old and the huge impact punk had on a generation.

Just last month you became the inaugural star on the new King’s Heath Walk of Fame!
It’s very, very sweet. The business people of King’s Heath put this together because King’s Heath has this amazing history which I actually didn’t know about. People like The Beatles did their first gig in King’s Heath, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and people like Laurel and Hardy even performed there.

National Trust: The Great British Walk!: Trailblazers

September 6th, 2012

Toyah is the cover star of the Autumn 2012 issue of the ‘National Trust Magazine’, plus an interview & great photos.

This season sees the start of our big walking festival, with some 3,000 outdoor events scheduled for our sites nationwide. To help us launch it we’ve asked four familiar faces to reveal where – and why – they love to roam…

Toyah Willcox: Singer, author and presenter, at Croome

The benefits of walking are so underestimed! It’s free and it gives you instant access to the wonderful diversity of the British landscape. I think it’s so important to walk; to explore and to escape your very day routine – it’s so good for your body and mind. I’ve always loved walking as it has proved to be the perfect exercise for me. I’ve had problems with my joints throughout my life, particularly my hips, so I can’t go running…

Croome is a very special place to walk. I live nearby and make sure I come here at least twice a month…

Suosikki: Rock’s New Wild Girl (1981)

July 5th, 2012

An interesting, very rare, interview with Toyah from 1981. This was originally published by Finnish music magazine ‘Suosikki’.

FIERCE REDHEAD TOYAH SAYS: “I’M CRAZY ABOUT RABBITS!”

Now I have seen her, today’s hottest rock singer in the world, Toyah (Willcox). Compared to this tiny redheaded whirlwind rest of the female singers- and some men- look like salt statues. Toyah is 145 centimetres of pure sex appeal and energy!

After the concert Suosikki Magazine got an exclusive interview with Toyah, an honour not bestowed on many publications in the world. Markku Fagerlund asked the questions and Toyah answered. At the same time Toyah read the latest issue of Suosikki and liked it so much she sent the readers a special message: “Keep going strong!”

Toyah Willcox is a 23 year old multi-talented artist who has this year finally reached the top. Her latest album “Anthem” has been well received in most European countries (it’s number 2 in the UK at the moment) and her gigs have been massively successful.

As well as being a famous singer Toyah is an actress. We’ve been able to admire her sexy persona in “Quadrophenia”, “Jubilee”, “The Corn Is Green” and various TV series including “Radioetsivä” (Shoestring) which aired also in Finland.

Smash Hits: 30 Years Ago Today

May 27th, 2012

Exactly 30 years ago today, 27th May 1982, Toyah’s ‘Brave New World’ visage graced the cover of the biggest music magazine of the 80s, ‘Smash Hits’. If it’s not the it’s certainly one of the greatest magazine covers, and 30 years later it still looks fantastic. Visit the Like Punk Never Happened: Smash Hits Archive to read the full issue online.

Smash Hits: Toyah 1980/81

May 26th, 2012

‘Smash Hits’ magazine gave Toyah memorable cover issues in November 1980 and September 1981, but little did we realise what May 1982 would bring…

La La La La La… Look-In

May 25th, 2012

I got a wave of nostalgia for ‘Look-In’ magazine last weekend, and found a great website dedicated to “The Junior TV Times”. Toyah had two full covers of ‘Look-In’ in 1981 and ’82, and was omnipresent in the publication, via a plethora of pin-ups, features, fact files and comic strips, in the early 80’s. The magazine ran for 23 years between 1971 and 1994.

Worcestershire Living: It’s A Mystery

May 7th, 2012

An excellent new interview with Toyah, from the latest issue of Worcestershire Living magazine.

How did Toyah Willcox transform herself from the original Punk Princess to Proud Resident of Pershore? Deirdre Shields finds out.

There is something very endearing about Toyah Willcox. She is one in a long tradition of creative – sometimes downright cussed – free spirits, who mellow into a kind of national treasure with the passing years. Say what you like about Toyah, you could never pigeon-hole her. She is the original wild child Punk Princess, credited with starting the Goth movement, who voiced Teletubbies, champions the National Trust, and is a staunch supporter of her local community in Pershore.

Being Toyah, she challenges the word ‘mellow’. ‘I don’t think I’m mellowing,’ she says, ‘though I do find things that freaked me out in the past don’t bother me anymore. I’m working harder than ever.’ She certainly is. She is about to embark on a spring tour to celebrate the 30th anniversary of her albums The Changeling, and Warrior Rock. The tour is billed as a treat for ‘Toyah diehards, 1980’s fans, and Goth’rock lovers.’
