The long awaited 80’s Invasion Tour is back and opened at the Pavilion Theatre in Rhyl on the 2nd of March. YES Mag was lucky enough to be on the guest list and what a night it was!
The show opened with Liverpool’s finest guitar duo China Crisis, who within minutes had everyone on their feet dancing to theor classic beat.
Next up the legendary (and very energetic) pop punk princess Toyah burst on to the stage with hits ‘It’s A Mystery’, ‘I Want Yo be Free’ and many more of her 80’s classics.
‘Let’s make it like an 80s school disco’, said the performers – and the Theatre Severn certainly had a party atmosphere when it came to the 80s Invasion.
Pop stars China Crisis, Toyah, Paul Young and Martika took to the stage in Shrewsbury on Tuesday, performing their nostalgic hits. Most of the shows I go to are chosen by my mum, and this was no exception. The show was opened by China Crisis, who did a great job of getting the mid-week crowd up and dancing.
We both found Toyah a real revelation, she looked absolutely stunning and had energy by the barrel on stage. She also interspersed her hits, including It’s A Mystery, Thunder In The Mountains and I Wanna Be Free, with tales of her time during the 80s. But it was her cover of Echo Beach, originally by Martha and the Muffins, that really got the crowd going.
Toyah, Paul Young, Martika and China Crisis are currently travelling the UK with the 80’s Invasion 2017 UK Tour.
The foursome have already played dates at Rhyl Pavilion, De Monfort Hall in Leicester, Stoke’s Victoria Hall, Edinburgh Playhouse and Shrewsbury’s Theatre Severn. Tonight the tour reaches the Central Theatre, Chatham.

The 1980s, is synonymous with big hair and big aspirations.
It was also undoubtedly one of the best decades for music. Not only did it give birth to the music video but also left us with an eclectic mix of styles and genre’s many of which can still be heard in today’s charts.
Such is the fondness for this power dressing period and its place in our relatively recent memories, 37 years on artists from the day are still singing to scores of fans up and down the country at festivals or gigs. An example of this nostalgia package – The 80’s Invasion Tour – was at Rhyl’s Pavilion Theatre on Thursday.
… A quick turn around enabled the next act Toyah to capatalise on the feel good mood. The diminutive diva, who looked remarkable for someone set to celebrate her 59th birthday, launched into her set of defiant early 80s anthems including ‘ It’s a Mystery’ and ‘I want to be free’ – enjoyed by scores of fist pumping audience members. A strong contender surely for national treasure Ms Willcox was followed by international recording artist Martika…

This month our Content Editor, Charlie O’Neill had the chance to catch up with Toyah Willcox ahead of the ‘80’s Invasion Tour’.
Firstly, Happy New Year. Did you have a nice Christmas? What did you get up to over the festive period?
TOYAH: Thank you and the same to you! I had the best Christmas ever, it was absolutely lovely. We were both home from a year of touring. And, we just had family time and for me that’s what Christmas always will be. It was very gentle and perfect. It’s the only time of year, where no matter what happens, whatever distractions, and you always make room for family. Its catch up time.
Do you have any New Years resolutions set or any goals you are aiming to achieve this year?
TOYAH: My New Years resolutions usually go into about 3 pages of dialogue with myself! Basically, I just want to keep developing and moving forward. I don’t want to just rest on my laurels. So, my new years resolutions are always linked to creative writing, painting, developing ideas and examining ideas, brining them into fruition. My New Years resolutions are always boringly predictable, but they are for me, nagging myself to hit my goals.

Hard to believe, I know, but my hair was once orange. Bright orange. It wasn’t meant to be. It was supposed to be blonde, but the dying process failed miserably, hence the Tangoed mullet. It was July 1982. I was 18 and stupidly excited as I had front row tickets to see Toyah a couple of days later at the Playhouse. The ‘hair-don’t’ proved serendipitous; when Toyah bounced on stage we appeared to have shared the same bottle of dye.
That was my introduction to the force of nature that is Toyah Willcox.
…Towards the end of that Playhouse gig, the front two rows ended sitting cross-legged up on stage as the elfin star danced around us belting out the classic Ieya.. actually, it might have been Danced … or maybe even Race Through Space, my favourite.
Following her success in last year’s outdoor concert in a town park, Eighties pop punk princess Toyah is returning to Aylesbury but this time she will be indoors, at the Waterside Theatre as part of the 80’s Invasion Tour.
Joining her on stage will be fellow 80s stars, Luton’s Paul Young, Liverpool’s China Crisis and from America, Martika.
Toyah wowed the crowds during her outdoor gig, and sang with as much energy and passion as in her heyday, so she’s sure to be a hit on the Waterside stage.
‘We have had 40 years of practice at what we do’: pop icon Toyah Willcox is ready for the 80s Invasion in Greenwich
They may have ended over a quarter of a century ago but the 1980s will never really die. With its colourful fashion and experimental pop it seems everyone has a soft spot for the decade.
Pop star Toyah Willcox, whose hits included It’s a Mystery and Thunder in the Mountains, will play the 80s Invasion Tour at Indigo2 on March 16 alongside Paul Young, Martika and China Crisis.
She told us: “It is going to be a lot of fun. We have two hours of non-stop hits so I am looking forward to it a lot. I work with China Crisis and Paul Young all the time so we are very much old friends as well as family. I think it is going to be a bit of a giggle.
“We are well practised, we have had 40 years of practice at what we do so the shows tend to be quite sparkling and polished but we do have fun at the same time.” She added: “Eighties music is a phenomena and it seems to go from strength to strength.
“I’ve found this with nearly everything I did in the eighties – my films are the same. They bring new audiences. It must be something about that decade that rang in the changes.
“For me I think it was because songs were pretty epic back then.”
Tickets for next March’s 80s Invasion Tour are now on general sale as of 9am this morning. Paul Young, Martika, Toyah and China Crisis play 15 dates around the UK. Click below to visit toyahwillcox.com for ticket links to every venue. See also tdpromo at Twitter for updates.
