Bring in 2024 with 80s legends – Toyah, Carol Decker (T’Pau) and Deniece Pearson (Five Star) all performing on the BBC Radio 2 Sounds of the 80s Live Tour Show from Birmingham’s Symphony Hall on December 31st.
Taking place from 9pm on New Year’s Eve, Sunday 31 December 2023. Alongside producer Johnny Kalifornia, they will take you back to the best decade in music – the 80s! Party along to specially curated Mastermixes and watch as the brilliant Sounds of the 80s dancers recreate classic scenes from 80s films and videos.
Dance to your favourite 80s anthems from artists such as Wham!, Queen, Prince, Madonna, Whitney and more.
Toyah Willcox has taken to the stage like no other for 42 years. From punk princess to cult stage actress, she has won numerous awards and nominations from singing to writing to acting. In 2001 Toyah was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Central England in Birmingham.

A selection of screen caps from last night’s Sounds Of The 80s, which aired on BBC Radio Two and, visually, on the BBC Red Button, with Toyah guesting. Toyah chatted about her music career and imagery and there was a short montage (Brave New World, Echo Beach, Soul Passing Through Soul, It’s A Mystery from Top Of The Pops) and a full play of the I Want To Be Free video, with Toyah recalling how good it was to make. Toyah guests on BBC Radio Two’s Sounds Of The 80s tonight. A specially filmed segment will also be available on BBC Red Button (as well as BBC Interactive 601 on Freeview) at 10.30pm – see here for repeat air days/times – Toyah talks about her career in the 80s and the Anthem album. Sounds Of The 80s will be online, for the next month, at BBC iPlayer post-airing tonight.
An interesting extra piece of info about tonight’s Red Button feature – The Toyah video clips being used have been given a new audio track, greatly improving the sound quality. This painstaking process was carried out by longtime Toyah fan David Anning.

Sara Cox plays a plethora of ’80s videos and chats to punk pop icon Toyah about her hectic times during the early 1980s and the creation of her album Anthem, which included tracks such as It’s a Mystery, I Wanna Be Free and Obsolete. Toyah also reveals her own favourite video from the decade. 80s videos in the show include classics from Human League, Whitney Houston, the Jam, Elvis Costello and the Attractions, Thompson Twins, Adam and the Ants, Pet Shop Boys, the Pretenders and ABC. Plus a look back at what the top five singles were this week in 1989.
Following last Thursday’s announcement by BBC Who’s in Today?, the date of Toyah’s guest appearance on BBC Radio Two’s Sounds Of The 80s, presented by Sara Cox, has been revealed.
This is Toyah’s second time on the show, she previously guested back in February 2014. That is available to listen to here.

Toyah will be guesting on an upcoming edition of Sounds Of The 80s on BBC Radio 2. The programme, hosted by Sara Cox, airs each Saturday night at 10pm.

Legendary presenter Ken Bruce voices Sounds Like The 80s, which brings together icons from the British music scene to select their favourite tracks from the decade to create their ultimate mixtape of the era.
With song selections from a variety of famous faces synonymous with the 80s including Midge Ure, Jazzie B, Toyah Willcox, Pete Waterman and Michaela Strachan, we hear the stories behind the tracks that defined a generation, told by those who truly lived it.

Toyah guested on Su Davies show on BBC Radio Wiltshire on Saturday (8th February), talking the Electric Ladies Of The 80s tour, Hazel O’Connor (“How well do you know Hazel, Toyah Willcox…?“), the Eighties, big hair and much more. There were also plays of I Want To Be Free and It’s A Mystery.

Two 80s icons explore the distinct sounds that came out of different parts of Britain and Ireland in one of pop’s golden decades. Midge Ure, lead singer of Ultravox and one of the men behind Band Aid, and Kim Appleby, who had a string of hits with her sister Mel in the Stock, Aitken and Waterman-produced band Mel and Kim, go on a journey back in time to the 80s to figure out why certain cities produced their own diverse tunes.
