In Suffolk: Crimson Queen/Greatest Hits…Live! Review

March 25th, 2014

insuffolk14aA great review, of Toyah’s Crimson Queen/Greatest Hits…Live! gig at The Apex in Bury St Edmunds, by In Suffolk.

Toyah – In Suffolk Review

I expected a build-up, a fanfare, some dry ice at least. Suddenly, I blinked, and there she was : coming straight at me at 100 miles an hour.

There are some people who are just not quite of this world. All you can do is stand back and watch. Toyah leaps. Toyah dances. Toyah sings note perfect. Toyah doesn’t seem to even break into a sweat. Toyah does not stop for an hour and a half. In the middle ages you’d get burned for less.

Toyah doesn’t mean to intimidate me. She is warm and funny. She asks the audience if they “want to hear some 80′s rock and roll”. We all cry out: “YES!” Toyah dedicates It’s A Mystery to pensioner at the back of the hall. She tells self- depreciating stories about playing holiday camps and how her song Spectacular, that was intended for the 2012 Paralympics, ended up being used in Patsy Kensit’s Weight Watchers commercial. She laughs with us. She makes us feel she doesn’t want to be anywhere but here. Toyah is truly in the moment.

Bexhill-On-Sea Observer: Punk Princess Who Continues To Amaze

March 25th, 2014

bexob14aA new article, on Toyah’s forthcoming Crimson Queen/Greatest Hits…Live! date in Hastings, by the Bexhill-On-Sea Observer.

Toyah Willcox and her band
St Mary in the Castle, Hastings
Saturday April 5 at 7.30pm

Toyah’s career has been diverse with hit records and prestigious acting roles to her credit, and she is also an author, TV celebrity, and vocalist with her husband Robert Fripp new band The Humans.

But it is her own band that she brings to St Mary in the Castle, and you can expect a dynamic performance from this charismatic survivor.

The show is a celebration of her thirty year songbook with well-loved songs that include such massive hits as It’s a Mystery and I Wanna Be Free and cult classic tracks from those early albums Sheep Farming In Barnet and The Blue Meaning through to the Platinum-selling Anthem and the critically acclaimed The Changeling.

Seventies and 80s pop star Toyah is set to play a live show at the Picturedrome.

In a career spanning over 30 years she has amassed 13 top 40 singles, recorded 20 albums and toured the world. She first emerged in 1977 and by 1979 Toyah’s band was gaining critical success with the debut single, Victims of the Riddle.
