Maigret: Complete Collection: Newsy Bits & Pieces!

March 11th, 2013

Various recent press and reviews for the newly released Region 1 DVD box set of Maigret: The Complete Collection.

USA Today: DVD extra: Michael Gambon’s ‘Maigret’ out this week: New boxed set features complete collection of episodes from 1992 detective series ‘Maigret’ starring Michael Gambon (Harry Potter’s Hogwarts Headmaster Dumbledore).

Sentinel Source: Old ‘Maigret’ returns to DVD in new edition: “Maigret” has now been reissued in a boxed set of 4 DVDs holding the 12 episodes that comprise Series 1 and 2 of this wonderful police drama.

HK Film News: Maigret: Complete Collection – DVD Review: A woman’s body is discovered in the basement of an upperclass hotel in “Maigret and the Hotel Majestic”, which finds the detective getting physical with an irate prostitute (Toyah Willcox) and receiving some nasty scratches across one side of his face.

Blog Critics: DVD Review: Maigret, Complete Collection: There are some actors who have the ability to make everything they do seem effortless. Somehow they manage to make their characters seem like a natural extension of themselves.

DVD File: Maigret: The Complete Collection: DVD Review: Maigret: The Complete Collection isn’t must-see crime drama programming, but Gambon’s performance really is something special, so fans of the subgenre shouldn’t hesitate to give these discs a spin on their rental queues. A/V quality isn’t sensational (and there are no bonuses included at all), but from the right vantage point, these episodes can be pretty fun.

Toyah News Briefs: Dr Jekyll/The Tempest/Quadrophenia

August 5th, 2012

• The 1980 BBC version of Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde has now been released on DVD in Sweden. This release has a slightly different cover to the UK version (released in 2007). The cast includes David Hemmings, Diana Dors and Toyah. View a larger version of the Swedish cover here.

• Derek Jarman’s 1979 version of The Tempest is just about to be released on Blu-ray (Region A/1) for the first time. There’s a new review of the film at the Criterion Cast website: A less easy choice however came in the casting of Miranda, which went to punk rock mega-star (and also star of Criterion-approved Jubilee also from Jarman and the soon to be released Quadrophenia) Toyah Willcox. Always seen as a virginal young woman, Willcox’s punk rock persona far from fit the character, but her performance was really quite entertaining, and the relationship between she and Williams’ Prospero is vital and engaging.

• A larger version of The Tempest Blu-ray cover is also now available. View here.

Qudrophenia Region A/1 Blu-ray: Read more details on this forthcoming release at Modculture: As they say “You can get a UK Blu-ray already, but the Quadrophenia Criterion Collection Blu-ray release is a considerable step up from that.”

The Derek Jarman Collection: DVD Artwork

April 18th, 2012

The, just revealed, artwork for The Derek Jarman Collection 5 disc DVD set. This includes Jubilee and The Tempest and will be released in Australia (but available to everyone thanks to the internet) on 2nd May 2012.

A collection of five astonishing films from a visionary British filmmaker:

Jubilee (1978) Queen Elizabeth I travels to late twentieth-century Britain to discover a tawdry and depressing landscape where life mostly seems aimless and is anyway held cheap. Three post-punk girls while away their vacuous existence as best they can, from time-to-time straying into murder to relieve the boredom.

The Tempest (1979) Jarman’s Tempest is the story of Miranda’s growth from girlhood to woman; Prospero has retreated to a world of ideas but it is cold and loveless, he condemns Caliban as a monster but all Jarman’s Caliban is guilty of is possessing carnal appetites, the same appetites which Miranda is starting to discover for herself.

Toyah News Briefs

April 17th, 2012

• I’ve lost count of the number of times Minder has been reissued on DVD over the last 12 years. This latest box set is a goodie though: Minder: The Dennis Waterman Years. A 20 disc set featuring every episode (68), from the ‘classic’ series, with Arthur and Terry. Toyah, of course, plays Kate in Series Two, Episode Eight, ‘All Mod Cons’, which is included in this, recently released, set.

More Than 30 Years In The TARDIS: DVD Delayed Until 2013?

April 12th, 2012

It looks as though the DVD release of More Than 30 Years In The TARDIS has been delayed until 2013, the 50th anniversary year of Doctor Who.

The Doctor Who tv documentary Toyah participated in, filmed and televised in 1993, is to be released on DVD, as part of a set titled ‘The Legacy Box’.

The set will feature the incomplete 1979 Tom Baker story Shada (completed with animation), MTTYITT and a variety of exciting extras. There was no definite word that this would be released in 2012 but rumours were rife that it would be.

30 Years In The TARDIS originally aired on the BBC as part of the 30th anniversary celebration of Doctor Who in 1993. When an extended version was released on BBC Video in 1994, it was retitled More Than Thirty Years In The TARDIS.
