Toyah
Willcox talks at Birmingham Chamber event Birmingham-born
pop star Toyah Willcox has told of the
terrifying sexism she faced
when she was younger.
Speaking before her appearance at
Birmingham Chamber of Commerces
Chamber Women Who... event
she said it was inevitable that 30 years
ago club promoters would expect female
singers to sleep with them in return for
performing at their venue.
And although she said she was
shocked at the severity of
Andy Grays punishment, after he was
sacked from Sky Sports because of his and
co-presenter Richard Keys sexist
remarks, she called for more to be done
about sexism today.
Ive experienced terrifying
sexism and ageism that was deliberately
cruel, she said.
It was hard being a middle class
woman in the music industry when you were
just treated as a sex object.
We are living in a fast-changing
cultural environment and I would like to
think sexism isnt as bad as it was
30 years ago but many women are still
experiencing it and it is something we
must work to change.

Butler, Liz Cotton, John Holmes and Chris
Phipps, who sat around on odd-looking
chairs talking about the arts.

The
'Daily Mail' interviewd Toyah, in their
'Femail' supplement, on 8th January. She
talks about her school days and
rebellious teenage years.
Everyone else at school was terrified
of me, I was the rebel from day one
Singer, actress and writer Toyah
Willcox, 52, is best known for her punky
performances on Top Of The Pops in the
1980s and is perhaps less famous
for her voiceovers on Teletubbies. She is
married to musician Robert Fripp and
lives in Worcestershire.
Im 11 in this picture. It
wasnt a great day Id
failed my 11-plus and just had some
vaccination jabs. I was about to enter
the senior school at Edgbaston C of E
College for Girls the one school I
went to all my life from the age of three
and a half.
I was born in Birmingham. My father,
Beric, ran a joinery business and owned
two factories. My mother, Barbara, was a
dancer from the age of 14 to 19. She
toured with the comedian Max Wall in a
dance group of six girls.
My father fell for her when he saw her
dancing in Weston-super-Mare. She was 18,
but it took him months to get close to
her because she was strictly chaperoned.
The only way he could speak to my mother
was to get the chaperone drunk.
