Eighties
Stars Flick Switch To Start Christmas
Countdown Derby
is now looking much brighter and more
festive, thanks to an array of twinkling
lights stretched across the city.
It took an band of celebrities, old and
new, to make the city shine but they were
cheered all the way by adoring fans. But
it was Eighties stars Toyah Willcox and
Carol Decker who stole the show.
They both sang former hits It's a
Mystery and China in Your Hands
and then officially switched on the
Westfield Christmas lights, with a little
help from Santa.
Speaking earlier, Toyah, who has also
found fame with a number of television
series and has written books, said she
was "delighted" to be in Derby.
She said: "I love this time of year
but often only get Christmas Day off
because of appearing in pantomime. I make
the most of it with my family and usually
spend the day eating sweets."

Toyah Live
2010: Nightingales Set List |
22 November, 2010 |
|
|
Toyah played The
Nightingale in Birmingham on Saturday
night.
The set-list was: School's Out, Rebel
Yell, Echo Beach, Thunder In The
Mountains, Sweet Child 'O Mine, It's A
Mystery, I Love Rock 'N Roll, I Want To
Be Free, (the live premiere of The
Humans') Sea Of Size, (and a festive end
to the night with the Slade classic)
Merry Christmas Everybody.
A little tidbit from the PA. It seems
that 'Sea of Size' was possibly
originally titled 'Sea of Sighs'!

Tony
Edwards: 1932 - 2010 |
22 November, 2010 |
|
|
Sad news; Tony Edwards,
known to all Toyah fans as one of the
heads of Safari Records, passed away on
11th November 2010.
In 1977 Edwards launched Safari Records
with John Craig, who had helped run
Oyster, another Purple-related label
boasting Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow and
the Strawbs. They signed New York punk
exile and transsexual Wayne County,
backed by British band the Electric
Chairs, and caused a sensation with the
Blatantly Offensive EP which topped the
independent charts.
Safari also promoted punk band The Boys
and their festive alter-egos The Yobs.
Their guitarist Matt Dangerfield says
Edwards was "a fantastic old school
music biz character of a kind you don't
come across any more. I will always
remember him turning up at the Marquee
for a Boys gig at the height of punk. He
was wearing a tweed cape and deerstalker
hat à la Sherlock Holmes. To say he
stood out a bit would be an
understatement."
Edwards also guided Toyah's rise from
indy darling to Best Female Singer at the
British Rock & Pop Awards in 1982.
Eclectic and iconococlastic, Safari also
released a punk-country version of Kenny
Rogers' "Ruby, Don't Take Your Love
To Town" by Gary Holton and
"Scatterlings Of Africa" by
Juluka, the racially mixed South African
group led by Johnny Clegg.

Sonic Boom
Girl: Spark Talks Toyah! |
01 November, 2010 |
|
|
Spark,
aka Jess Morgan, talked Toyah in a recent
interview, "Sonic Boom Girl",
with 'The Von Pip Musical Express':
VP: People have compared
you to everybody from Toyah to Kate Bush;
do you find comparisons annoying, lazy,
or flattering?
SPARK: People will
always make comparisons. Its a way
of people being able to make sense of
something new. Thats why were
a society that relies on genres, even
though most artists dont like
putting themselves or their music in
categories or boxes. But it helps people
make sense of it all, and thats
okay. Comparisons can work in both good
and bad ways. Some I think are lazy,
definitely. I understand the need for
people to compare, so I dont like
to call it annoying, although sometimes I
dont agree with whats been
said. Most of the time I find it
flattering though. Being compared to Kate
Bush, Toyah and all the others is an
honour! Theyre incredible, no
complaints from me! Even when I
dont see it myself, Ive been
compared to amazing, strong, successful
women and that cant be anything but
flattering. Could definitely be worse!

Von Pip Musical Express' website, here. |
