Christmas 2011: 'Cambridge News'

Review
Cambridge
Corn Exchange
by Joanne Tynan
Starring national treasure Su
Pollard as the lonely and cruel
New York orphanage owner Miss
Hannigan and David McAlister as
the booming billionaire Mr
Warbucks, this is a family romp
packed full of laughs that
delivers a heart-warming message
of hope this Christmas.
Pollard shows exactly why she has
been a household name for 30
years: her impeccable comic
timing stole the show and had the
audience in stitches
particularly when she threw
herself at a shell-shocked
President Roosevelt.
She is known for her physical
comedy but her amazingly strong
singing voice was a revelation
and a pleasure to behold, while
her desperate attempts to seduce
any man who came into her
eye-line left the male members of
the audience quaking in their
boots.

Friday

Interview
An excellent new
interview with Su, from the
'Cambridge News'. Su talks Annie,
Hi-de-Hi!, fashion,
Madonna and much more. The Annie
Christmas spectacular opens on
Saturday afternoon at the
Cambridge Corn Exchange.
Jennifer Shelton chats to
TV fave and alternative
style icon Su Pollard, as
she prepares to bring a little
festive cheer and
recession-boosting optimism to
Cambridge with Annie.
Su Pollard isn't known for her
conservative style of dress, and
as she strides cheerily into the
Corn Exchange building for our
interview, she doesn't
disappoint. Adorned with a
sparkly sequined top, knee-length
socks, her trademark glasses and
what looks like a tiny, scarlet
top hat, she would give any panto
dame a run for their money. She
is also carrying a bright green
and pink lunchbox. With pigs on.
It was given to her, she says, by
some children she worked with on
a recent show.
"It had pig sweets in
it," she says, earnestly,
settling down beside me as though
for a cosy chat with an old pal.
"Have you ever had one of
those chewy pigs? They take about
a day to eat! But it was a nice
thought. And I've kept the box. .
."

Statistics reveal that as the

I think its safe to say, If
I were to hum a tune from Annie,

This timeless classic is loved
the world over, with its
memorable score and heartwarming
optimism. The acclaimed film
adaption helped skyrocket this
musical based on a comic
strip into the hearts of
millions, a position it has
retained for many years since.
Beady eyed visitors to the Spark
website or those of you who have
been listening to the review show
recently will know I recently
caught up with Su Pollard.
Pollard takes the reigns as
villainous child-loather Miss
Hannigan. Having played the role
on and off over the past decade
she inevitably has the character
off to a T. Typically
hammy and suitably
hilarious, Pollard certainly
stole the show for me.

The cast of Annie need not worry
about the old saying do not
appear with children and animals
as it comes with the
territory from the start.
Su Pollard, as always, gives a
sterling performance as the
wicked, alcoholic Miss Hannigan,
belting out her solo numbers to
great effect, while hitting the
mark exactly on the comedy front.
But special mention must be made
of Audrey Leybourne, who plays
Mrs. Pugh, one of Daddy Warbucks
staff. While joining in the
musical numbers, and noticeably
shepherding the orphans during
the Christmas scene, her smile
lights up the stage and is fondly
remembered as one of The Roly

2011: 'Sunderland Echo' Review
Thursday

Theatre
Review
Sunderland
Empire
by Katy Wheeler
The songs may be saccharine, the
accents may be hammy, but
youve got to hand it to
Annie its a great
show.
It was Su Pollard, however, who
stole the show. Its the
second time Ive seen the
actress in the role of little
girl-hater Miss Hannigan and she
never fails to impress I
wish she was in more scenes.
Shes a great comic actress
who commands the stage and her
voice in tracks such as Little
Girls and Easy Street is simply
superb.
