2011: 'STV.TV' Review: Annie At
The Kings, Glasgow, Is A
Musical Treat
Friday
30th September, 2011
Theatre
Review
King's
Theatre, Glasgow By Alan Chadwick
Family favourite
starring Su Pollard has lost none
of its feelgood charm
Packed full of show stopping
numbers, including the classics
Tomorrow and Its a
Hard-Knock Life, the Dickensian
triumph- over-adversity
sentimentality of Annie may a bit
too sugar coated for some tastes.
But then again, in these times
maybe we could all do with some
Depression-lifting optimism. And
Annie has it in spades.
Former Hi De Hi star Su Pollard
steals the show here as the
tyrannical, sex starved,
alcoholic orphanage matron, Miss
Hannigan, her performance full of
adept physical comedy
Amongst these kids we discover
Little Orphan Annie
on opening night played by
charming 10 year old Welsh girl
Rachel Hall - as she scrubs the
floors of the New York Municipal
Orphanage, under the watchful eye
of Miss Hannigan, played with
relish by Su Pollard. Ms Pollard
takes this opportunity to remind
the audience of the singing voice
that first set her on the road to
stardom, with great renditions of
Little Girls and the
trio Easy Street
alongside onstage brother Rooster
(Philip Andrew) and his
girlfriend Lily St Regis (Kerry
George).
Su is guesting on MacAulay
& Co on 'BBC Radio
Scotland' this morning: The show
airs between 10.30am to Midday.
Listen live at the website or catch up later
at BBC iPlayer.
Fred will be speaking to
Katie McGrath who plays the part
of Morgana in BBC drama Merlin
and Su Pollard will be live in
the studio to tell us about her
latest theatre role.

Tribute To David Croft
Wednesday

s
Su's
tribute to 'mentor'
Nottingham-born comedy actress Su
Pollard says the death of sitcom
writer David Croft has left her
"heartbroken".
Mr Croft died yesterday in his
holiday home in Portugal at the
age of 89.
Ms Pollard, who worked with Mr
Croft between 1984 and 2000 on
hit TV show Hi-De-Hi, said the
artist had been "a great
mentor" to her. She added:
"I think I've never been as
heartbroken since I've lost my
dad.
"I owe him so much. He was a
fantastic man and a great part of
my life. I cannot speak highly
enough of him. He will always
have a very special place in my
heart."
It is with much
sadness that Su Online reports
the death of David Croft O.B.E.,
co-creator of some of
television's most memorable and
best loved situation comedies.
David, who passed away peacefully
in his sleep at his home in
Portugal yesterday, was a true
showbusiness legend whose rosta
of BBC comedies kept the world
laughing for some forty years.
His comedies, co-written with
Jimmy Perry O.B.E. and Jeremy
Lloyd, continue to be seen around
the world.
David's work gave many, including
Su, their big break, and brought
laughter to many millions over
the years. That laughter will
continue for generations to
come... We salute you David
Croft. Rest in Peace.

Macca Chats to the lovely Su

just cheered us up!!!
Su has mentioned in
recent interviews that she is
planning on taking her
one-woman-show out on the road
again, possibly, next year.
There are some memories of Su's
hit show from the late 80's, A
Song... A Frock... and A Tinkle,
at Richard Kates' website.
Richard devised and directed A
Song... A Frock... and A Tinkle.

After an incredible
fortnight in Dublin, which
included sell out evening and

cast and crew are in Scotland
this week. The show opens at the,
legendary, King's Theatre
tomorrow evening.
There will be matinees on
Wednesday and Saturday. View

Walking up to The Gaiety Theatre
I could feel the anticipation
growing.. for the lots of kids
that were outside. Growing up
Annie was always just a movie I
wasnt that into on the
telly at Christmas. This however,
made me go Wow! on a few
occasions.
Starting off is Miss
Hannigans ophanage, we are
introduced to the kids and their
Hard Knock Life. What
was surprising for me was my
familiarity with some of the
songs from the stage show.
The cast are great.
Su Pollard is a treat as Miss
Hannigan, always funny,
well forgive the kids for
their dodgy New York accents at
the start. The rest of the cast
are great singers and actors and
everybody loves Audrey Lebourne.
Easily the winner of
everybodys heart was
Annies dog Sandy, the
quietest, cutest most obedient
dog ever.
Plans are taking
shape on the Back To Maplin's
2011 event at Dovercourt
(Harwich, Essex) which is just a
few weeks away. A few tickets are
still remaining for the weekend.
Email Tony Tarran at
hi-de-hi@sky.com to reserve your
place.
Guests expected over the weekend
(as always subject to personal
and professional commitments)
include Jimmy Perry OBE, Paul
Shane, Jeffrey Holland, Su
Pollard and David Webb with more
yet to confirm.
These events are always great fun
with plenty of time for attendees
to mingle informally with the
stars.
Tony and Joanne are looking
forward to welcoming everyone
back to the Hawaiian Ballroom at
the Cliff Hotel. The events in
2007 and 2009 were highly praised
and the 2011 event looks to be
another fabulous weekend with the
stars and creators of an all time
great television comedy.

'Hi-de-Hi.net' news page, here, for further info
and details on how to book
tickets for this event.

Over the weekend we
celebrated our 11th birthday. Su

want to say a huge thank you to
all of our visitors for helping
make Su Online a success. Please
stay tuned as we will continue to
bring you all the latest official
news on, and from, Su, as well as
a surprise or two along the way.
There are a lot of people out
there who feel the same about
Annie as they do about Marmite
they either love it or
hate it. They love Annie because
its a feel-good,
rags-to-riches story about the
abandoned child who eventually
finds true happiness. Or they
hate it because its a story
of a precocious brat who sings
saccharine fuelled songs and
despite not being particularly
likeable, ends up being adopted
by a millionaire (sorry,
billionaire!).
It does seem a shame for those
who fall into latter camp if the
only reason is because they
cant get past the
shows namesake. Shes
not actually that bad

2011: 'The Lincolnite' Review:
Audience Amazed By Annie On
Opening Night
Saturday

Theatre
Review
Theatre
Royal, Lincoln
By Lauren Westwood
Much-loved musical Annie returned
to the stage in spectacular style
on September 1 at Lincolns
Theatre Royal, marking the start
of what is set to be a successful
four-month tour.
This uplifting tale of a humble
orphan with a big heart is a
family favourite full of charm.
With fun, flawless dance
sequences, familiar sing-alongs
and charismatic characters it is
easy to see why the show is so
popular.
Most of the laughs were delivered
by Su Pollard, who resumed her
role as the devilishly comic,
scene stealing Miss Hannigan. Her
infectious energy was equalled by
the exceptional cast, as they
sang and danced their way into
the hearts of the delighted
audience.
