.Telegraph & Argus: Star Turn: From Peggy To Annie in Bradford
Wednesday 24th August, 2011 Interview
An interview with Su, from Bradford's 'Telegraph & Argus', published at the beginning of the month.

Actress's long and varied career

Su Pollard was the first – and possibly only – woman to sing Ava Maria in hotpants in a working men’s club.

On Opportunity Knocks she sang I’m Just A Girl Who Can’t Say No, and came runner-up to a performing dog.

So when she says she’s had more embarrassing moments in her career than most people have had hot dinners, I’m inclined to believe her.

This was the girl whose first taste of the spotlight was standing on a box, aged six, to announce the arrival of the Angel Gabriel in the school nativity play. She fell straight through the box, the audience howled with laughter and Su has been hooked on entertaining audiences ever since.

She returns to Bradford this summer, starring in rags-to-riches musical Annie.

.This is Lincolnshire: 'It All Started When I Fell Through A Box On Stage'
Friday 19th August, 2011 Interview
Su Pollard's first adventure into acting gave her not only a taste for the profession but also the thrill of getting a laugh from an audience.

Just six at the time, Su was playing an angel in the school nativity play. When she stood on a box to announce the arrival of Angel Gabriel, Su fell through the top.

"The director wanted me to stand on it as a makeshift platform," she says. "I was the Angel Gabriel's messenger, but my foot went through the lid.

"I just ad-libbed," says Su – quite brave for someone so young.

Su remembers the audience laughing, but knew they weren't being unkind. It gave her a buzz that stuck.

"I'm sure that was the start of it," she says. "I thought 'I could take to this'."

.Love Lincoln: Meets Su Pollard
Friday 19th August, 2011 Interview
Su Pollard chats to LoveLincoln.co.uk about her upcoming show Annie, landing on the stage of the Lincoln Theatre Royal on the 1st September.

How does it feel to be starring in Annie – one of the best-known musicals – for the last time? Why do you think it’s so popular?

I’m just so happy to have been in a show that brings a lot of warmth to people. Annie is a story of hope which appeals to everyone I think.

It’s popular for lots of reasons in my opinion. It’s full of great numbers and interesting characters – the list is endless. The dog Danny who plays Sandy in our show is great too, a real crowd pleaser. People love him!

.Bury Free Press: TV Stars Celebrate Milestone
Friday 19th August, 2011 Press Clips
A glamorous star-studded event was held at the Honington home of Dad’s Army writer David Croft at the weekend.

More than 150 guests attended the party at Honington Hall on Saturday which was organised to celebrate 35 years of Mr Croft’s television production company, Worldwide Theatrix Ltd - thought to be one of the oldest still in existence.

Ann Croft, David’s wife, said: “It was a marvellous party and went extremely well. I have thrown a lot of parties and I think it’s probably one of the best.”

The party, which had a 1930s theme, treated guests to food, drink, live music and fireworks. Mayor of St Edmundsbury, Cllr Christopher Spicer, joined a guest list of friends, family and stars, including Su Pollard, Amanda Donohoe, Jimmy Perry and Ian Lavender.

Writer and producer David Croft, 89, is famed for creating Dad’s Army, Are You Being Served? and ‘Allo ‘Allo.

.Newark Advertiser: Annie Stages Its Last Tour
Thursday 18th August, 2011 Interview
One of the most successful musicals of all time is back on tour for the last time. The timeless tale of Little Orphan Annie returns to the Theatre Royal, Lincoln, from Thursday, September 1 to Saturday, September 3, presented by Chris Moreno, as part of its final tour.

This production sees Su Pollard return to her role as the cruel and crooked Miss Hannigan and David McAlister as Daddy Warbucks.

Su, who became a household name after starring in the hit comedies Hi-de-Hi and You Rang M’Lord, said she was looking forward to returning to Lincoln as this is where she first performed as Miss Hannigan.

She said: “Producer Chris Moreno first asked me to play the role seven years ago and I took over from Ruth Madoc. I was then asked to reprise the role two years ago and again for the last tour as Chris’s rights to produce the play finally run out.

.Messenger: Su Pollard Talks About Playing Annie At The Palace
Thursday 18th August, 2011 Interview
It doesn’t seem 23 years since Su Pollard last played Hi-de-Hi’s Peggy, the chambermaid, whose uniform she still keeps. Unbelievably, she’s about to play Miss Hannigan in Annie for the fifth time in seven years on the musical’s final tour.

"It’s nice to do acting, nice to have fun and nice to dance even at my age," she says. "A good choreographer will design movements to suit you."

She believes being Peggy has helped her get other parts - even Shakespeare. Five years ago she played nurse in Romeo and Juliet.

"If it wasn’t for Peggy, I wouldn’t have my lovely house or the work I have done since,” says the bubbly mistress of stage and screen. If every new character you play is believable, people will forget Peggy."

Su Pollard of Hi-de-Hi! fame returns to Lincoln this September to reprise her role as Miss Hannigan in the hit musical Annie.

The show kicks off a four-month tour on September 1 at Lincoln’s Theatre Royal where Pollard will be treading the boards as the devious Miss Hannigan for the final time, having played the character for the best part of a decade.

Pollard is no stranger to Lincoln, having performed here on numerous occasions.
“I’ve been here loads. I’ve been coming to Lincoln probably since about 1974. For me it’s changed so much for the better. They’ve made it really pretty.

“Of course there’s a fantastic university and I love the shops. I’ve always loved the Bailgate. They seem to have spent a lot of money around Lincoln. The people are always great. They say ‘eh up duck’.”
