Hilarious Su Pollard
is promising audiences will go
home happy after watching the
forthcoming show of Annie at the
Octagon Theatre in Yeovil.
Su, who made herself a household
name during the 1980s in the
sitcom Hi-de-Hi in which she
played the scatty chalet maid
Peggy Ollerenshaw, stars as the
dastardly Miss Hannigan in the
much-loved musical which will be
performed at the Octagon from
April 11-16.
And Su, speaking to the Express,
said: Weve been
touring with Annie since August,
so we are heavily bedded-in.
Its a wonderful show
with some great songs and I am
confident that the people of
Yeovil will go home happy after
watching.
Su is looking forward to
appearing at the Octagon and said
she last performed on the Yeovil
stage more than ten years ago in
a performance of Abigails
Party.

Hard Knock Life For Su |

Interview |

A new
interview with Su, published
yesterday by 'Northants Herald
& Post'.
Childhood memories can come
flooding back in a variety of
ways.
It can happen out of the blue by
hearing a sound, a distinctive
odour, seeing an object, visiting
a favourite location or being
asked a question.
In the case of Su Pollard it was
recalling the day she fell off
her bike when she was five years
old and a little boy put his arm
around her and kissed her.
Not much in the scale of things
but it is similar to the heart
warming sensation people get when
watching the musical Annie.

The 'Sunday Mercury'
have just published a new Hi-de-Hi!
feature at their website. HI-DE-HI!
(1980-88)
Hi-de-Hi, campers! To which
everyone should now reply
Ho-de-ho!
Welcome to Maplins holiday camp
in the late 1950s, a place full
of cheery yellowcoats, ambitious
chalet maids and acts with
varying degrees of ability to
entertain.
Take Mr Partridge, the
74-year-old Punch and Judy man,
who wasnt the ideal
childrens entertainer
because he didnt like
children but did like a drink.
At least the holidaymakers
enjoyed watching comic Ted Bovis
(Paul Shane) and his gormless
sidekick Spike Dixon, played by
Walsall-born Jeffrey Holland, who
was spotted by creators Jimmy
Perry and David Croft when he
appeared in the stage version of
Dads Army.
Ruth Madoc was the oh-so-Welsh
Gladys Pugh, the chief yellowcoat
and sports organiser in charge of
making the Tannoy announcements,
complete with three-note
xylophone chime.

2011: 'Click Liverpool' Review |
Wednesday

Theatre
Review |
|
Liverpool
Empire Theatre
By Jeanette Smith
Annie Shines at Liverpool
Empire
The story opens in the New York
Municipal Orphanage in 1933 where
Annie has been deposited by her
parents, promising to return for
her. We see the dormitory where
the orphans sleep and Annie is
trying to comfort them.
Then enters Miss Hannigan, the
stern supervisor who is always up
for a swig of the bottle. Played
with verve by the irrepressible
Su Pollard (Hi-de-Hi) she puts in
a very funny laugh-out-loud
performance, which at times
morphs into pantomime. Whenever
she is on stage you are sure of a
giggle as she acts her heart out
bringing much needed comedy to
the backdrop of
Americas1930s depression.
And her singing voice is a
revelation, using it to fantastic
effect.
