.Made
Up: Interview: Su Pollard |
Sunday
27th February, 2011 |
Interview |
|
A new
interview with Su, from the 'Made
Up: On Stage In Liverpool'
website.
Hello Is That
Vanessa?! the familiar
croaky voice yells as soon as she
picks up the phone. Well, she got
the first letter right. And, in
many years of doing interviews
like these, it cant be said
one single other actor or
celebrity has ever shown the
slightest interest in who was
calling them on their schedule of
phoners. Points for Su Pollard.
Made Up is already charmed.
Professional actress, singer,
comedienne, writer, and Su
Pollard, the woman herself is
delightfully camp, renowned for
her outrageous dress sense, and
the owner of a Wikipedia entry
full of priceless
facts - including
when filming one episode of
Hi-de-Hi, Peter Keogh proposed to
her while she was dressed as an
insect and that in 1995 she
released and album called Famous
Su Raincoat: Pollard Sings The
Hits Of Leonard Cohen (there
appears to be no other evidence
of this, but its funny
either way).
But apart from honing that big,
bubbly personality, the
bespectacled sitcom legend and
former Rear of the Year (really),
has been best known in recent
years for her lengthy on-off
stint as surly, luckless
orphanage boss Miss Hannigan in
the touring production of Annie.
Not that shes sick of
talking about it.
Itll cheer me up,
actually, she trills.
Its a bit dismal and
drizzly here today.

Mayflower
Theatre, Southampton
By Phil Hewitt
The irresistible, irrepressible
Annie once again delights with
her endearing call to trust in
the future - a wonderful
feel-good fairy-tale in which
positive thinking gets every
possible reward.
Were deep in a depression;
there are rumblings and threats
in far-off lands. For 1930s
America, you might as well read
2011 Britain.
And then in breezes
breath-of-fresh-air Annie, the
wildly-optimistic little orphan
with the knack of making
everything turn up trumps simply
by believing that thats
whats going to happen.
Su Pollard is terrific as the
ghastly, grotesque Miss Hannigan,
the boozy old bird in charge of
the childrens home from
which Annie starts her meteoric
rise to become the worlds
happiest child and chief
presidential adviser.

Hi-De-Hi Girl Heads To Town For

Thanks to Paul Evans |
Interview |
|
'EDP2', Eastern
Daily Press, published a great
full-page Su feature/interview in
yesterday's issue of their
newspaper.
She's warm and wacky -
and she's on her way to King's
Lynn. Neil Haverson talks to Su
Pollard. The cover star of the
latest edition of Let's Talk.
Su Pollard launched into
conversation as if we'd known
each other for years. "I'm
at my mum's on the Lincolnshire
coast." she announced when
she answered the phone.
"I've just been for a good
little stroll. Well actually it
turned into a brisk walk, it's so
cold!"
Su is everything you would expect
her to be; warm, funny, friendly
- and, of course, a bit wacky!
She is touring with the hit
musical Annie and will be
performing at King's Lynn Corn
Exchange for a week from March 7.

The
Mayflower, Southampton
By Lorelei Reddin
That slightly precocious curly
ginger haired orphan was a big
part of my childhood in that
iconic film and it seems
little has changed in the decades
since.
The Mayflower was full to the
rafters of smiling little girls
as Annie opened the half-term
entertainment last night.
The children (and that loveable
dog) quite deservedly receive all
the plaudits in this show. There
are some beautiful ensemble
sequences from the orphans
youngsters from Fareham and Hedge
End Stagecoach and our Annie
(Victoria Sian Lewis) has a
promising future on the stage.

2011: Dig Yorkshire Review |
Wednesday

Theatre
Review |
|
The Dome,
Doncaster
By Eileen Caiger Gray
Orphan Annie has been searching
for her parents on stages all
around the world since 1977, and
still the tears and the cheers
keep coming...
The choreography is pretty clunky
and restrained, but sets and
backcloths are stunning. From
dowdy orphanage, through New York
streets and skylines, to the
White House, and into our
billionaire's sumptuous mansion,
it's glorious artistic detail all
the way...
Though her wickedness smacks more
of pantomime villainy than of
real life cruelty, Su
Pollards dastardly Miss
Hannagan works well enough. She
does tend to operate in flat-out
top gear mode throughout, which
doesnt give much scope for
a nuanced performance. However,
she certainly relishes the comedy
as she totters about, flashing
stocking tops and broom-handle
legs, and her singing voice is
particularly strong and pleasing.

Interview |
|
A new interview with
Su, from the 'Liverpool Echo',
published yesterday. Annie
plays the Liverpool Empire from
15th March.
Where was the family home
you grew up in and what was it
like?
The family home was in
Nottingham. It was a two-bed
terraced house with an attic, a
garden at the front and a back
yard. It was quite spacious.
What was your clearest
memory of the house?
My clearest memory was of our dad
building a shower next to the
kitchen to modernise it.
Where was the first house
you bought yourself and what did
it cost?
The first house I bought myself
is the one I am still living in
in London. Its a three
storey town house with patio,
balcony and garage. It cost
£70,000 in 1984.

2011: 'The Scotsman' Review |

Theatre
Review |

The
Playhouse, Edinburgh
By Kelly Apter
To put on a production of Annie,
you have to fly in the face of
theatrical wisdom and work with
the young and the canine. With
ten children and two dogs on
stage, disaster could strike at
any moment...
... Meanwhile, the chorus of
orphans (hand picked from Mary
Erskine's School try to
ignore the irony) do justice to
perennial favourite It's The Hard
Knock Life.
And, after all those years trying
to talk her way into a yellow
coat in Hi-de-Hi, it's nice to
see Su Pollard as the
alcohol-soaked Miss Hannigan,
finally centre stage and belting
out the tracks.

By Gordon Clayton
Annie, played by an exceedingly
poised and accomplished Victoria
Sian Lewis, takes the rags to
riches journey, managing to
sidestep the criminal intent of
the brother of Miss Hannigan,
Officer in charge of the
orphanage.
Miss Hannigan (Sue Pollard) gets
through the day seeking comfort
in liquor and harassing male
visitors. This part is mainly
played for laughs as you would
expect from Sue Pollard, but has
a great point number in
"Little Girls". Just
like the orphans she is also
looking for a route to a better
life ("Easy Street").

Friday

Interview |
|
A new
interview with Su, published in
yesterday's 'The Scotsman'. Annie
plays at the Edinburgh Playhouse
from Tuesday 8th February.
'The sun'll come out tomorrow,
bet your bottom dollar..."
so sang the irrepressible Su
Pollard in the Benidorm Christmas
special - appropriate for a
couple of reasons.
First, she returns to the Capital
next week to reprise her role as
the dastardly Miss Hannigan in
Annie, from which the song comes.
Second, the sun certainly came
out for her whistlestop trip to
the Costa Blanca.
"We filmed Benidorm last
August while I was touring Annie,
it was a pretty tight
schedule," reveals the Hi De
Hi star.
"We finished Annie in
Bradford on the Saturday, flew to
Benidorm on the Sunday, a few
hours later we started filming,
filmed all day Monday and then
flew back to do Annie in Milton
Keynes on the Tuesday.
"It was very hot, about 120
degrees. In fact, it was so hot
the crew were pouring bottles of
water over their heads instead of
drinking them."

2011: 'The Oxford Times' Review |
Thursday

Theatre
Review |
|
Aylesbury
Waterside Theatre
By Christopher Gray
The musical that opened
Ambassadors highly
successful Milton Keynes Theatre
at the end of 1999 - before going
on to a festive run at
Oxfords New Theatre - is
now gracing the stage of the
groups newest venue, in
Aylesbury. After a decade without
Annie, it is a delight to welcome
her back.
I acknowledge that not everyone
shares my taste for a show often
considered to be cloyingly
sentimental. There is only a
certain amount (possibly very
little) one can take of the
precocious 13-year-old with red
hair and attendant shaggy dog
using her charms to win over the
adult world. And I agree that the
winsome orphans success in
this respect does rather stretch
credibility.
But there is a hard edge to
Thomas Meehans book - a
robust and ready wit, too - that
alters what might otherwise be a
syrupy, sick-making experience.
And the presence on stage of a
gleefully nasty character with a
healthy contempt for kids - I
refer to orphanage boss Miss
Hannigan - assists the process
too.
The drunken, man-hungry harridan
proves a fine comic turn for the
excellent Su Pollard, long a star
on the musical stage following
her career-defining creation of
chalet girl Peggy in TVs
Hi-De-Hi. (I recall her
sensational performance in Little
Shop of Horrors at the New
Theatre back in 1994.)

Annie, the family
favourite musical, is coming to
Aylesbury next month and the
Bucks Herald has teamed up with
the Waterside Theatre to give you
the chance to win a family ticket
to this heartwarming classic.
If you want a slice of feelgood
theatre, they dont come
much better than this
rags-to-riches musical, which
charts Annies fun-filled
quest to track down her real
parents. But of course she has to
foil the dastardly plans of Miss
Hannigan and her evil brother
Rooster, too.
Reprising her role as the
treacherous Miss Hannigan, say
Hi-De-Hi to Su Pollard.
I strive to give the best
performance because people always
remember you for the last thing
you have done. This is a musical
for every age, said Su.
Miss Hannigan is a bit
wicked. I try to make her a bit
sympathetic and inject her
character with a bit of song.
When I have to be mean as Miss
Hannigan those kids have to be
scared of her so I have to show
my mettle.

This years
Christmas musical at De Montfort
Hall has proved a big hit with
audiences.
Annie, which is on track to be a
sell-out, stars Hi-de-Hi actress
Su Pollard as wicked orphanage
boss Miss Hannigan.
The shows two-week run
began on Monday night, and
audiences flooding out of
yesterdays matinee
performance were full of praise.

turn as herself, singing show
tunes to raise the taxi fare to a
Christmas gig.

Mel's death was announced via a
phone call, against a background
of Roy Wood rocking out his
biggest hit, there wasn't a dry
eye in the house.
