Comet: Interview: Su Pollard |
Sunday
28th November, 2010 |
Interview |
|
Su was interviewed
recently by Simon Fitzjohn, and
the feature was syndicated to
numerous publications earlier
this week. Annie plays
the Wimbledon Theatre from
Tuesday.
Su Pollard may have
enjoyed a long and varied career,
including stints on stage and
even recording a top-ten single,
but there is little doubt that
for most people she will always
be remembered as Peggy
Ollerenshaw in camp comedy
Hi-de-Hi.
Over 20 years on from the classic
programmes demise, you may
be forgiven for thinking Pollard
would have had enough of being
reminded about her spell as the
haphazard chalet maid.
But nothing could be further from
the truth, as she explains:
People still come up to me
all the time and want to talk
about Hi de Hi.
To be so many years on from
it and it still mean so much to
people is incredible.
It is really, really nice
to be associated with something
that obviously gave people so
much pleasure.

Herald: Annie Comes To Town |
Monday
22nd November, 2010 |
Interview |
|
Su was interviewed
by the 'Surrey Herald' last
Thursday. Annie plays
the New Victoria Theatre from
tomorrow.
Actress Su Pollard tells
Andy Mortimer how she is
determined to put some fiesty fun
into the role of orphanage owner
Miss Hannigan and whisk the
audience along an emotional
journey.
For the second time in her
career, Hi-de-Hi! actress Su
Pollard is transformed. Gone are
the frilly holiday camp clothes
and bubbly personality, and in
comes a love of the liquor and
some dastardly plans to boot.
For London-based Su is now
treading the boards as Miss
Hannigan, an evil orphanage owner
who takes in a young 11-year-old
girl, Annie, as she desperately
tries to find her real parents.
And according to Su, it is a role
she is devouring.
She said: "I'm loving it.
Miss Hannigan is certainly a
feisty character although I don't
personally see her as being that
evil."

Darlington Civic Theatre &

Monday
22nd November, 2010 |
Theatre |
|
Su has
given her support to "Save
Darlington Civic Theatre &
Arts Centre" .
The Civic has always been a
delight for actors and audiences
alike. Apart from the stark fact
that our profession will lose yet
another venue to practice our
craft, my main concern is that
the loyal audience that has built
up over the years will then have
to travel further afield for
their entertainment. As good as
neighbouring theatres are, I
believe adding what could be
another two hours onto an evening
out could have detrimental
effects. There is no doubt the
people of Darlington adore
'their' theatre. Please reward
them by continuing to provide it.
Selfishly, I adore playing there
and don't want to stop. Many
thanks, Su Pollard.
Numerous performers have voiced
their opinions on the proposed
closure. View some here. |

the formidable Miss Hannigan in
Annie at the New Victoria

.Uxbridge
Gazette: Su Loves To Play A
Baddie |
Thursday
11th November, 2010 |
Interview |
|
A new interview with
su, published yesterday in the
'Uxbridge Gazette'.
Probably best known for
appearing in camp comedy,
Hi-de-Hi!, Su Pollard stars as
the dastardly Miss Hannigan in
much-loved musical Annie,
currently showing at the Beck
Theatre. She told Siba Matti
about her love of playing
villains and being the original
Lady Gaga
Since she celebrated her 60th
birthday this time last year, Su
Pollard may have been able to
claim a free bus pass but she has
absolutely no intention of
slowing down.
The actress and comedienne, who
became a household name playing
Peggy Ollerenshaw in Hide-Hi!, is
treading the boards of the Beck
Theatre as Miss Hannigan in
rags-to-riches musical Annie.
This is the fourth time Su has
reprised her role as the
villainous orphanage director,
and she is loving every minute.
"It's great fun playing a
baddie - I loved being the wicked
queen in a panto version of Snow
White - and Miss Hannigan is such
a fabulous character, one that
everyone loves to hate," she
explains.

Top 10: Classic Sitcoms |
Monday
8th November, 2010 |
Press
Clips |
|
'TV.com'
recently published their
"Top 10: Classic
Sitcoms", with Hi-de-Hi!
placing in the Top 3.
Compiling a list of Britain's top
10 classic sitcoms isnt as
easy as it sounds. We all broadly
agree on recent shows that are
great examples of British comedy,
but when it comes to casting our
minds further back it can be hard
to tell if some shows are still
loved because they remind us of
our childhoods, or whether they
actually stand up as credible
comedy.
3. Hi-de-Hi! (1980-1988)
Morning campers! Set
during the late Fifties/early
Sixties, this exercise in
nostalgia was a show the whole
family could watch. Yet although
it had a big heart, it
wasnt twee. The fictional
Maplins holiday camp and its
Yellowcoats harked back to an era
when the British only holidayed
at home. With a decidedly
pantomime feel, the struggles
between management and the
entertainment staff fuelled many
plots. Characters were either
awaiting an elusive big break, or
at the end of their careers. Su
Pollard easily stole the show as
the hapless chalet maid Peggy. View the full
Top 10, here.

2010/11: Have A Lovely Time
Review |
Friday
5th November, 2010 |
Theatre
Review |
|
Regent
Theatre, Stoke-on-Trent
By Helen Moffat
Annie herself, played by
13-year-old Molly Law, was sweet
without being sickly, with a
lovely singing voice and a strong
stage presence.
She held her own amid some really
good actors and actresses, which
included David McAlister playing
a very robust Daddy Warbucks, and
some wonderful supporting roles,
though it was hard to look
anywhere else but at Su Pollard,
when her hilarious Miss Hannigan
was on stage.
Sus portrayal of the
embittered, drunken old orphanage
matron was brilliant, and for
anyone who had her down simply as
a comedic actor, she gave a
timely reminder of why she has
been cast in so many musicals
with a voice that could grace any
West end stage.
