Su Pollard: The Camp
Comic
In 1984, when I was eight, I
became obsessed with Peggy
Ollerenshaw from Hi-de-Hi!, one
of the most successful - and
campest sitcoms of all time. Set
in Maplins holiday camp, Peggy
was the loveable chalet maid
desperate to become a 'Yellow
Coat' - a member of the
entertainment team. She was a
klutz, a loveable loser;
enthusiastic but over the top;
well-meaning but misunderstood.
She longed for acceptance but
never quite made it. She was
always the outsider looking in
not able to be part of the gang
and, wouldn't you know it, as a
gay kid I completely related to
her.

Photographer Alex
Grace has published a blog
recounting her recent photo
shoots with Su, and Holly
Johnson, for the latest issue of
'Attitude' magazine, and their
"Role Models" special
feature.
I was then sent to photograph
English comedy actress Su
Pollard, of 'Hi-di-Hi' and 'You
Rang, M'Lord' fame, at The
Hexagon Theatre in Reading (also
known affectionately as
'dreading' to Su ..... am i
allowed to say that?!).
At the time Su was performing in
'Annie' which I believe is now
touring the country. Su was a
riot; eccentric and entertaining
as ever and very easy to shoot.
It was fun listening to her
stories and also hearing about
Simon Marks' (the journalist)
childhood obsession with
'Hi-di-Hi'.

A classic tale is
being portrayed at a city theatre
this week.
Musical Annie, starring Su
Pollard and David McAlister, is
running at The Regent theatre
until Saturday.
The play tells the story of
little Annie, a gutsy 11-year-old
orphan who, after being left on
the doorsteps of a New York City
orphanage run by the cruel and
crooked Miss Hannigan, is
determined to find her real
parents.
The musical, which has previously
won nine Tony Awards, has one of
Broadway's most memorable scores
including It's A Hard Knock Life,
Easy Street, NYC and Tomorrow.
Tickets for Annie at The Regent
theatre can be booked by calling
the box office on 0844 871 7649. |

Herald: Su's On Easy Street As A
Whisky-Soaked Harridan In Annie |
Saturday
30th October, 2010 |
Interview |
|
A brief
interview with Su, from
yesterday's 'Plymouth Herald'.
Family musical Annie has been
delighting audiences for more
than three decades. The story of
Annie's adventures from Miss
Hannigan's orphanage to the
luxurious home of Oliver
Warbucks, has a feelgood charm
and hit songs like It's A Hard
Knock Life, Easy Street and, of
course, Tomorrow.
Taking on the role of
whisky-soaked harridan Miss
Hannigan at the Hall for Cornwall
next week is Su Pollard.
"She's a fantastic character
I love her," says Su.
"I try and get across the
frustration of her life. She gets
badgered and badgered and
badgered by these horrible,
snotty-nosed orphans and at the
end of the show she gets carted
off in a strait jacket.
This is the fourth time Su has
donned the wonky wig and laddered
tights to play the hard-drinking
lush, and she has earned rave
reviews for her warts-and-all
portrayal.

2010/11: The Sentinel Review |
Thursday

Review |

Regent
Theatre, Stoke-on-Trent
By Liz Rowley
In a recent interview with The
Sentinel, Su Pollard showed
sympathy for Miss Hannigan; the
mean-spirited matron she plays in
hit musical Annie.
"I always like to think that
Miss Hannigan isn't out and out
evil. She's had a terribly
frustrating life
all she
wants is a bloke."
I'm not sure that sympathy
spilled out to the audience at
The Regent Theatre on Tuesday
night, but one thing's for
certain, Pollard got it just
right.
Recognised for her role as chalet
maid Peggy Ollerenshaw in
Hi-de-Hi, the vibrant star is
also a credited stage performer.
Many will have seen her bring
down the house during her
rendition of You're My World in
60s musical Shout! Those who
hadn't, however, would surely
admit to the captivating quality
she brought to the stage during
the opening of Annie's five-night
stay in the Potteries.

Another new
interview from Su, published
yesterday. This one is syndicated
to a number of publications
including the 'Runcorn &
Widnes Weekly'.
National treasure Su
Pollard talks to Will Harris
about her role in the hit musical
Annie
They say in showbusiness you
should never work with children
or animals Su Pollard is
doing both.
The 60-year-old is considered
something of a British gem,
having lent her eccentric style
and distinctive voice to comedy
characters on stage and screen
for the past 35 years.
She is currently at the Regent
Theatre in Hanley, starring as
the dastardly Miss Hannigan in
Annie until the end of the week
a role in which she
continues to revel in her fourth
tour.
When they first offered me
the role of Miss Hannigan I was
delighted, she said.
It was a part Id
always wanted to play since
seeing Sheila Hancock do it years
ago. I was too young to do it
then, but its great fun
playing her, and shes got
some great numbers too.

.The
Sentinel: Irrepressibly Cheerful
Su Finds Good In Everyone For
Annie Production |
Friday
22nd October, 2010 |
Interview |
|
A new
interview with Su, published in
'The Sentinel' today. Annie
opens at the Regent Theatre,
Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent this
Tuesday.
Only Su Pollard could find it
within her heart to defend the
evil Miss Hannigan.
As the manager of the
Depression-era children's home
where red-headed orphan Annie
lives, Hannigan is the fearsome
tyrant who refuses to extend the
hand of kindness to her
vulnerable young charges.
But Su as bubbly and
energetic in real life as her
on-stage and screen persona
is determined to restore
the mean-spirited matron's
reputation.
"I always like to think that
Miss Hannigan isn't out and out
evil," says Su, somewhat
ironically. "She's had a
terribly frustrating life. Think
about it. She never meets any
grown-ups apart from the laundry
man who comes once a month.
"Then she's surrounded by
these horrible children who
dangle dead mice in front of her.
She has looked after those kids
and it's all she's had in her
life for 30 years. I mean that's
why she's turned to the
drink."
On Tuesday Su makes her return to
The Regent Theatre, with Annie
she last appeared at the
Hanley venue in 2008, for 60s
tribute show Shout.

The
'Nottingham Evening Post'
published an interesting article
last weekend. Cassandra Stone
recalls her, and Su's, early
years in Nottingham
Cassandra Stone, now company
secretary of the Nottingham Arts
Theatre, has contributed so much
to the theatre over many years.
She freely admits she has done
just about everything: acting,
singing, wardrobe, ticket sales,
coffee bar etc.
She and her sister, Julia Hull,
who sang with the theatre's opera
group, made their first stage
appearances at St Jude's Church,
Mapperley, when Cassandra was
about six. It was in their genes.
Grandmother had been on stage at
the Nottingham Hippodrome and her
grandfather had also briefly been
an actor.
Nothing - except courage - could
have prepared Cassandra for one
of her recent and memorable roles
at the theatre.... as the
Stripper in The Graduate,
complete with tassles!
In a fond and funny look back at
a memorable time at the theatre,
in shows with Su Pollard,
Cassandra recalls: "My only
claim to fame is that I was
behind Su Pollard in the 'Hup,
two, three, four' cross by the
nurses in the 1960s production of
South Pacific.

Review |
|
The
Churchill Theatre, Bromley
By Matthew Jenkin
Lydia Tunstall is delightful in
the title role, belting out the
shows anthem Tomorrow with
an infectious energy and handling
the snappy dialogue with ease.
David McAlister as
Daddy Warbucks is a
little wobbly at times when
singing his numbers, but makes up
for it with his formidable stage
presence.
However, Su Pollard as the
alcoholic spinster/slave driver
Hannigan steals every scene she
is in with perfect comic timing
and a powerful set of pipes to
match.
Annies message of
unshakeable hope in the face of
adversity may be hard to swallow
for many adults but I defy anyone
to hate the shows
irresistibly upbeat songs,
charming cast and shamelessly
feel-good story.

The

By Greg Jameson
The heart-warming family musical
about a little orphan girl who
just wants to be loved is
currently touring, and playing at
the Bromley Churchill Theatre
until Saturday 23rd October...
...Placing a child at the centre
of the story is always a risk, as
they have to be solid and
believable for the production to
work. Thankfully the young actors
playing Annie and the other
orphans are excellent, with a
strong professional work ethic
that benefits some
well-choreographed dance
routines. They open the show with
a song and dance before the
anticipated entrance of Su
Pollard as the inebriated old
dragon in charge of the orphans,
which is a good way of helping
the children in the audience to
identify with the world of the
story straight away.

Talented cast put on a
stunning show for Annie
Without meaning to turn this into
a musical version of Scary Movie,
musicals seem to follow a
formula. Bit of singing and
dancing, things threaten to go
wrong, and a happy ending.
Okay, it cant be fitted to
all musicals, but its a
formula that tends to work
and Annie is no exception, simply
oozing feelgood factor.
Now if ever there was someone
born to play a particular role,
it was evident on stage here. Su
Pollard, of Hi-de-Hi fame, was
absolutely fantastic.
Its always a shame to
single out a particular actor or
actress, but she was terrific as
the drunken money-grabbing
child-hating orphanage boss with
no absolutely no heart.

Bruce James
Productions are currently
auditioning for the role of
Suzette for their forthcoming
production of Don't Dress For
Dinner.
Suzette is a role that Su made
her own during a West End
production and UK tour in the
1990's. In 2008 Su recalled:
"My favourite role was in a
French farce called Dont
Dress For Dinner, with lovely
Simon Cadell, which ran in the
West End for a year and we toured
it for years afterwards."
The role of 'Suzette' is a
very important one to the success
of the comedy as the character
has to be in complete contrast to
the other two women in the piece,
namely 'Jacquleine' the wife and
'Suzanne' the mistress and model.
We were looking for someone who
was a bit quirky and not
necessarily, what you would call,
an average shape or height so as
to accentuate the differences
between the three female parts.
In the original West End
production the role of 'Suzette'
was played by Su Pollard, who I
suggest would have been perfect
in the part. Not that we were
necessarily looking for someone
to be Su Pollard, rather someone
who would allow us to achieve a
balance with the two already cast
actresses.

Su Pollard
on Annie and paving the way for
Lady Gaga with a vegetable dress
Matthew Jenkin talks to the
irrepressible Su Pollard about
returning to her role as Miss
Hannigan in Annie, why she's the
original Lady Gaga and keeping
her former Rear of the Year pert.
Question: Youre
starring as Miss Hannigan in
Annie at The Churchill Theatre in
Bromley next week. She's a
character you've played before.
Whats brought you back to
the role?
Su Pollard: Ooh
yes I love it. Theres
everything you could really want
in this role. You get to do a
nice bit of acting, because
its quite a meaty role and
you get to have a lot of fun
which comes out of her antics
where shes desperate for
male attention.
Shes surrounded by these
awful, awful orphans who are just
terrible to her. They keep waking
her up and Annie keeps trying to
escape. So a lot of the humour
comes out of her frustration. She
also gets a couple of good
numbers, so I really relish doing
the role, its great.

101: "Oh Doctor

Richard Spendlove |

'Suite101.com'
interviewed, writer of Oh
Doctor Beeching!, Richard
Spendlove last month.
The co-creator of the
fondly-remembered British sitcom
talks to Suite101 about the
origins of the series and the
inspiration behind it.
Writer and broadcaster, Richard
Spendlove, worked for British
Rail for the first 35 years of
his career, holding a variety of
positions within the company,
including Regional Inspector - a
role he would later play on TV -
before opting to take early
retirement at the age of 50 in
1989.
Having become completely
disillusioned with the whole
organisation - an organisation
that he says had been in steady
decline ever since Doctor
Beeching began closing down
smaller railway stations in the
1960s, in an unrelenting purge
that became known as "The
Beeching Axe" - Richard
decided to devote his time to his
other great passion:

2010/11: Seen Magazine Review |

Review |

Floral
Pavilion Theatre, Wirral
By Michael Dwyer
The word camp is a generally over
used word however when describing
the production of Annie currently
playing at the Floral Pavilion,
New Brighton this is the only
word that springs to mind! The
lavish sets, which include a
staircase any showgirl would be
proud of, create a spectacular
backdrop for the exceptionally
versatile and talented
performers...
...However the star of the show
without a doubt is Su Pollard.
She enters the stage in flurry of
energy that although hysterical
and full of classic
Su moments is also
poignant and endearing. What more
can be said about Ms Pollard, she
is a truly British institution
and her performance brings a
whole new meaning the word camp
making Annie a must see for every
age group.
