.Annie 2010/11: Wirral News Review
Thursday 30th September, 2010 Theatre Review
Floral Pavilion Theatre, Wirral
By Lorna Hughes

With a cast that includes 11 children and two dogs, Annie really should be a disaster.

But this touring version of the ultimate feel-good family musical, at the Floral Pavilion until Saturday, is a delight...

...Su Pollard is a scream as sex-starved drunk Miss Hannigan, the orphanage mistress who hates Annie and joins in with brother Rooster’s evil plans. All nervous energy, comedy legs and big voice, she’s supposed to be the villain of the piece but, in the former Hi-di-Hi actress’s hands, it’s hard not to have sympathy for her.

.View Wirral: Penguin Prepares For The Arrival of Su Pollard
Tuesday 28th September, 2010 Press Clips
The Floral Pavilion, New Brighton, has been gripped by Annie fever as everyone in the venue prepares for the arrival of one of the best loved musicals of all time and its outrageous leading lady Su Pollard. But one member of the team has taken its responsibilities very seriously by dressing in Annie’s dress and wig and standing proudly in the theatre’s foyer to promote the show.

The Floral Penguin (pictured) was installed as part of the Merseyside “Go Penguin” scheme at the end of last year and was a very popular attraction on the trail which included venues throughout the region. This large creature has now taken on the guise of the little orphan girl to help promote the show and is even wearing the heart shaped locket that provides the key to the story.

The show is coming to the Floral Pavilion from 27th September to the 2nd October and tickets are selling fast.

Monday 20th September, 2010 Press Clips
David McAlister was interviewed by the 'Coventry Telegraph' last Friday: Everyone listens when David McAlister starts to speak.

David said this of Su: It is his third time in the show and the new production reunites him with former Hi-De-Hi star Su Pollard.

“We were both in the Belgrade together about 100 years ago,” he remembers with a smile. “We were on tour with Irene Handl and Liz Fraser in One Of The Family. We were two young actors and it was before Su did Hi-De-Hi and before I did Hollyoaks.

“Su was wacky even then and it’s great to be working together again. She’s so effervescent and full of energy and she’s perfect as the child-hating Miss Hannigan.”

.Annie 2010/11: Whats On Stage Review
Friday 17th September, 2010 Theatre Review
Milton Keynes Theatre
By Lexy Knibbs (Age 11)

The perennial children’s favourite Annie is touring the UK with a cast that includes Su Pollard as the evil Miss Hannigan and David MacAlister as Daddy Warbucks. Here, 11-year-old Lexy Knibbs offers her view of the production:

It was great. I really enjoyed everything about this show. Annie (Victoria Sian Lewis) was very good at the dancing and the acting – she was Annie. She looked like she’d had a lot of practice.

Su Pollard was brilliant. The voice fitted her perfectly. She was scary and a bit weird, but very funny as well. When she kept trying to get friendly with the man who delivers the laundry it was hilarious.

.Wirral News: Su Pollard Happy To Be Back Onstage in Annie
Thursday 9th September, 2010 Interview
A new interview with Su, published in yesterday's 'Wirral News'.

She plays hard-drinking, children-hating harridan Miss Hannigan in Annie – but it’s no hard knock life for Su Pollard.

The former Hi-de-Hi star loves playing the bad guy in the rags-to-riches family musical, which is coming to the Floral Pavilion Theatre in New Brighton later this month.

And she says her dastardly character, who she first played in 2001, isn’t all she seems.

She told Liveguide: “I try to make it sympathetic. It’s her brother Rooster who’s the evil one with the big plan.

“She’s in that orphanage, she’s had no boyfriend and she has no company apart from kids. She just takes to the drink. Poor Miss Hannigan! I really like Annie. When you pass your teenage years and your 20s and 30s it’s nice to have a good, meaty part. I relish it and it’s a joy to do.”

Interviewing the 60-year-old is like having a conversation with an old friend as she happily chats about everything from her love of accessories – particularly fascinators – and her new notebook computer (“It’s marvellous. But I’m hopeless”) to Benidorm.

Last week she was in Spain to film a cameo appearance in the Christmas episode of the hit show.

Su said: “In the episode I play myself and I’ve gone over to sing at the Benidorm Palace. Everything goes wrong and I end up in a nudist hotel.

“All they had there was chicken and chips! I’ve been ramming down the vegetables since I got back.”

.Maidenhead Advertiser: The Real Thing: Annie
Sunday 5th September, 2010 Interview
Su was interviewed by the 'Maidenhead Advertiser' in August. Annie plays The Hexagon in Reading this week.

A celebrated stage and television actress who is starring in the musical Annie this autumn has hit out at theatre performers giving ‘slipshod miming performances’.

Hi-de-Hi star Su Pollard, who plays whiskey-abusing Miss Hannigan in the rags to riches tale, said the trend for using technology or miming as singing aids is short-changing audiences.

“It’s sad that I even have to say this but people who come to our show will only hear live singing and a live band. There’s no miming or tricks,” she said. “You hear so many stories about audiences being short-changed. If you are a professional you must sing and perform live and if you have a cold you still go out there even if you have to change some of the difficult notes.”

“I find it really, really annoying that people are being given slipshod miming performances,” she added.

The enduring star made her name in 1980s holiday camp comedy Hi-de-Hi before appearing in You Rang M'Lord?, enjoying a string of West End roles and even having a number two record.

She said that Annie is in her top five musicals of all time. “It’s total family viewing. A great granddaughter who’s three could be taken by her great-grandma who’s 86 and both would have a great time,” she said.

“It’s a little bit schmaltzy and sentimental but I think people like that,” she added. “I love the dancing and the songs and that it’s a rags to riches story of Annie, obviously having a bad start in life but then being plucked from that awful orphanage.”

.Nottingham Evening Post: Su Pledges Her Support...
Sunday 5th September, 2010 Press Clips
Su Pollard pledges her support for women to get behind the wheel of fire engines

Actress Su Pollard has pledged her support for Notts Fire and Rescue Service's ladies' driving challenge.

It will involve women being able to drive fire engines, HGVs and diggers while raising cash for the Fire Fighters Charity. Each woman will be asked to pay a £10 registration fee and raise at least £90 in sponsorship.

The Fire Fighters Charity supports current and former firefighters who have been injured and their families.

Su said the challenge was a good opportunity for women to drive a range of vehicles including mini diggers and JCBs and load pallets on to a truck while raising cash for charity.

.Wirral Globe: Annie Sees The Return Of Su To Wirral
Sunday 5th September, 2010 Interview
Su was interviewed by the ' Wirral Globe' in late July.

Su Pollard is set return to Wirral for the first time in 25 years to play Miss Hannigan in a new production of classic musical Annie.

The 60-year-old actress and singer - better known to millions as chalet maid Peggy Ollerenshaw in hit BBC comedy Hi-De-Hi - reprises her role as orphanage boss Miss Hannigan in the show, which will be staged at the Floral Pavilion in New Brighton from September 27 to October 2.

Nottingham-born Su, who has been in showbusiness for 40 years, told the Globe: "I'm looking forward to coming back to Wirral. Last time I was here was when I did a one-woman show.

"I remember looking out at Fort Perch Rock and taking a trip on a ferry. I've had Gerry Marsden's Ferry Across The Mersey in my head for the last 25 years".

It will be the fourth time Su has played Miss Hannigan in a touring production of Annie.

She said: "The great thing about Annie is that the show never dates my character has some brilliant songs.

"There are two sides to her; one is this woman acting tough in charge of the orphanage. Second, she is someone who is actually lonely."

.Get Bracknell: Su Pollard Gets Nasty in Annie at The Hexagon
Wednesday 1st September, 2010 Interview
Another new interview with Su, this one from 'Get Bracknell'. Annie plays The Hexagon, Reading next week.

Hi-de-Hi! star Su Pollard is the friendliest person Phil Creighton has ever interviewed. But now she has to get nasty to Annie

Once, she came second in a TV talent contest – beaten by a singing Jack Russell. Now Su Pollard is being upstaged every night by a little orphan girl, but she doesn’t mind in the slightest.

The stage and screen legend, famous for playing wannabe yellowcoat Peggy in classic sitcom Hi-de-Hi!, is coming back to The Hexagon next week with Annie.

In the musical, she plays the role of Miss Hannigan, the evil owner of an orphanage who has her sights set on the money young Annie has set aside as a reward for finding her natural parents.

The hard-nosed, drunken and embittered woman is one of Su’s favourite parts, having toured with the show in 2002, 2004 and 2009 as well as this show which launches Reading Arts’ autumn season.

“It’s a gift of a part for someone of my age,” says the 61-year-old singer and actress. “You get the best of both worlds as you get songs to sing. I love it every night.”

.Annie 2010/11: Public Reviews Review
Wednesday 1st September, 2010 Theatre Review
Milton Keynes Theatre
By Maggie Constable

I approached the theatre with some ambivalence, given Annie’s reputation for being somewhat cheesy, if not saccharin, but neither of these two adjectives were apt for the performance I saw. We opened into the orphanage with some great routines by the children (from the Diamond Dance School) and a beguiling turn from the youngest , a tot with blonde bunches who certainly knew how to act and could hold her own! Their singing and dancing for “It’s A Hard-Knock Life” were polished.

Soon there appeared the dastardly Miss Hannigan, played by Su Pollard. Improves with stage and with age seemed very appropriate here! Despite initial dropping of the NY accent and a few’ Hi Di Hi’—type lilts, Su Pollard played this role extremely well-the archetypal baddy- and produced an excellent comic turn. Miss Hannigan’s under-sexed, mean and lush aspects were brought out perfectly and amusingly, and the repartee with various other characters, including her brother, Rooster(Phillip Andrew), worked well for me. Her singing voice was a very pleasant surprise.
