BBC
Radio 4: Woman's Hour @ iPlayer |
31 January, 2012 |
|
|
Today's
Woman's Hour, with Toyah as a
guest talking about punk in 1977, is now
available to listen to at 'BBC iPlayer'.
There's even a blast of 'I Want To Be
Free'. Women and
Punk: As we gear up for the
Queens Diamond Jubilee year, we
look back at the Silver Jubilee in 1977
specifically the punk movement
that sprung up around that time. Leather,
piercings, spiky hair and torn clothing
were worn by young men and women on the
streets of London, Birmingham and
Liverpool, and in village bus shelters
across the country. This aggressive way
of dressing and confrontational music
blew away any trace of the early 70s
Flower Power era, but what did it leave
us with? What did punk mean for women and
what was its legacy? Jane is joined by
punk pop star Toyah Willcox, Gina Birch,
bassist with The Raincoats, and punk
photographer, artist and manager Caroline
Coon.
Listen to the
programme, at 'BBC iPlayer', here.
Toyah talks punk approximately 21 minutes
in. This will be available for the next
seven days.

I
Was A Teenage Toyah Fan: '80's
Empire' Review |
30 January, 2012 |
|
|
A
great new review of 'I Was A Teenage
Toyah Fan', by Huw Collingbourne, at
'80's Empire'.
If you were ever a teenager (and I
presume you must have been!), youve
probably been through this. For you,
maybe it was Kim Wilde or Kylie or Boy
George or Freddie Mercury. If you still
are a teenager, maybe its Lady Gaga
or Justin Bieber. But for Chris Limb, it
was Toyah.

Empire' blog, here.

Kawaii Punk:
Toyah is Tops! |
30 January, 2012 |
|
|
The
'Kawaii Punk' blog has just added some
Toyah fan art (by Andrew Payne and
Gillian Jones) from a retro issue of 'TV
Tops' magazine.
Its a couple of pictures of
post punk singing sensation Toyah, taken
from the September 4th 1982 edition of TV
Tops which, at the time, claimed to be
Britains best TV comic!
- although Im pretty sure the good
folks at Look-in would have had something
to say about that boast!

Aesop's
Astronauts by Tony Mulholland |
24 January, 2012 |
|
|
There
have been rumours for many years that
Toyah appeared in the science fiction
production Aesop's Astronauts by
Tony Mulholland, and now, finally, the
complete audio has surfaced online.
Aesop's Astronauts, a play
broadcast on 'BBC Radio 4' in February
1996, explores what might have happened
to the animals used as astronauts in the
earliest years of space exploration. In
the play the animals develop Accelerated
Evolutionary Syndrome and the power of
speech.
Toyah plays Mona in The Mona Story
'episode'. The production was directed
and recorded at BBC Pebble Mill. A real
rare curiosity from Toyah's CV. Possibly
of most interest to completists.
Download Aesop's Astronauts
here.

Kagablog:
Jubilee - Derek Jarman |
12 January, 2012 |
|
|
An
interesting article on Jubilee
by 'Kagablog'.
Jubilee (1978) is a wildly beautiful film
which strikes a precarious, and
compelling, balance between sheer anarchy
and genuine tenderness. Since first
viewing it a week ago I have since
watched it three times I have
found myself frequently talking and
writing to friends about it. Yet it
remains an elusive film; and after every
viewing, it tantalizes with new
connections and still more layers of
meaning. The Criterion Collection has
created a superb DVD release, and
included a wealth of archival and
original supplements described below.
