this ..." I'm not a Teletubbies expert but I'm fairly sure Toyah's voice wasn't on the single they released.

Express: Bereft Toyah Willcox's Gift To Sick Friend 23 November, 2011
The saying goes that it’s better to give than receive and that certainly seems to be the case for big-hearted singer Toyah Willcox this year.

The 53-year-old, who is married to guitarist and record producer Robert Fripp, lost her mother Barbara to cancer earlier this year and has donated her entire Christmas shopping fund to pay for a friend’s treatment for the disease.

“I always spend about £2,000 on Robert at Christmas,” she explains at a recording of Mike Read’s Pop Quiz for Vintage TV. “This will be my first Christmas without my mum, who I lost to cancer in September, and I’m not looking forward to it at all.

“I’ve donated all my Christmas money to a friend who needs to buy his cancer medication from America. Robert has done the same. They’re life-saving drugs and we’ve done this in my mother’s name. So we’re just going to have a normal day.”

Melissa Mailer-Yates Talks Brave New World 22 November, 2011
Brave New World by Melissa Mailer-Yates

This is one of the pieces for the Creative Face exhibition due in Las Vegas in 2012.

Toyah chose this image as her most favourite to show her at her best from the heady days of the 80s. It is based on the album cover shot for ‘The Changeling’, and comprises of acrylic and collage work of the original cover for Aldous Huxley’s ‘Brave New World’, and the many layers on the canvas are enhanced by crackling and subcutaneous layers to lift the surface.

This had its first public outing at the Everyman Cinema in Hampstead, London on 10th November 2011 at the London Premiere of Toyah’s new film ‘The Power of Three’.

I have always found Toyah to be an inspiring subject to paint, and a wonderful person too.
(A percentage of print sales will be donated to the charity which supported Toyah’s mother.)

Get Ready To Rock: FSF-A Islington Review 20 November, 2011
TOYAH, O2 Islington Academy, London
5 November 2011:
Review by Bob Singleton

The first time I saw Toyah was on 31st January 1980 at St Andrew's Hall in Norwich when she was promoting the imminent release of her first album 'Sheep Farming in Barnet' (a 6 song EP of the same name had been released some five months earlier).

Tonight, on her 'Sheep Farming to Anthems: Classics Revisited Live' tour, it would be interesting to see which version of the diminutive Brummie would turn up... Toyah the singer or Toyah the actress and TV personality?

Mature Times: Celebrities Feature On Honour Wall 17 November, 2011
Celebrities feature on The Stroke Association’s Honour Wall

Some of the UK’s most prolific celebrities have purchased their special bricks on The Stroke Association’s latest fundraising initiative, the virtual ‘Honour Wall’, to help raise funds for the UK’s first Life After Stroke Centre.

Queen of 80s pop, Toyah Willcox joined TV’s Adrian Chiles and film icon, Honor Blackman to buy and dedicate their bricks on the wall. Toyah said: “I’m really delighted to be able dedicate a brick to my father. Well done to The Stroke Association for supporting stroke survivors and their families right when they need it. I hope more people support this fantastic Centre.”

The Blue Meaning: Illuminated Movements 16 November, 2011
Or am I alone, as always is... It is 11,485 days, precisely, since this album was released. It hasn't aged...

'Ieya', 'Mummies', 'Blue Meanings', 'Vision', 'Insects', 'She'. All incredible songs. The utterly amazing 'Love Me'. There isn't a poor track to be heard. "All killer, no filler!"

Then there's the weird and wonderful 'Spaced Walking'. Earlier this year
Toyah told Dreamscape about the recording process of the song: "Steve James, Keith Hale, Gem Howard and I were messing around in the Marquee Studio at about 2am and Gem ordered a large cylinder of helium gas because he thought it would be fun. So Gem and I were in the vocal booth with Steve and Keith in the mixing studio and we were just messing about. It was improvised, Keith was on keyboards, I remember Gem having a spanner to open and close the gas valve every time I needed to fill me lungs." (A great response. Thanks to Stephen Bennett for submitting the question about 'Spaced Walking')

Four More From Toyah @ 30: In The Fairground 15 November, 2011
Hello, can anyone hear me up there..? Later this month sees the 30th Anniversary of the release of Toyah's other 1981 EP, the ridiculously underrated 'Four More From Toyah'. Four (five) great songs and amazing visuals to round off Toyah's magnificent 1981.

The four-song EP was released in late November 1981 and entered the UK singles chart on 28th November, eventually peaking at number 14 in December and stayed on the chart until the end of January 1982. As with the previous single, 'Thunder In The Mountains', all the songs on the EP were new releases and didn't appear on any album until years later.

The first 100,000 pressings of 'Four More From Toyah' also came with a free flexidisc, containing a fifth exclusive track, 'Stand Proud'.

To mark the 30th Anniversary Dreamscape is bringing you the songwords/lyrics to all five tracks. Click below to view a larger version of 'In The Fairground', and view 'The Furious Futures'

Backstage Tales : BBC Radio Four
Friday 9th December : 11- 11.30am

Midge Ure reveals the bizarre world of musicians on tour

He spills the beans on ‘the rider’, tour catering, tricky artists and overprotective managers and the most eye-watering examples of rock 'n' roll excess, and frugality, backstage. Getting a rock tour on the road is a massive undertaking, particularly if the star has a large entourage. Just feeding the crew is a military operation.

Having spent nearly 30 years on the road, Midge is perfectly placed to reveal the reality of musicians on tour. Fascinated by this bizarre backstage world, Midge goes on a mission to track down music promoters, tour managers, caterers, roadies, record company employees and the stars themselves to gather together the most intriguing and amusing backstage tales.

The programme also hears from Jason Donovan, Boy George, Kim Wilde, Toyah Willcox and Martin Kemp.

The Guardian: Franc Roddam 10 November, 2011
Franc Roddam: from parkas to the perfect souffle

What did director Franc Roddam do after Quadrophenia? He moved to LA, tried to woo Robert Redford – and ended up making MasterChef.

'You go to Hollywood," says Franc Roddam, "and the better you are at mediocrity, the better you'll get on. I tried to make personal films, which was a mistake." The director of Quadrophenia is explaining why he hasn't made a film in 20 years. After the huge success of his 1979 debut, the screen version of the Who's rock opera, Roddam headed to California with dreams of joining the gang.

In it she talks candidly about Cabaret, Three Men on Horse and Desire.

A Monsoon Fusion label embroidered and beaded dress.

Punk Globe: Live! From NYC!.. 06 November, 2011
All these NY Ballrooms that start with "H"... The Highline Ballroom played host to The Humans ,a band fronted by 80's U.K. icon Toyah, and this was, amazingly, her first ever U.S. performance, 30 years after her chart run in the UK and Europe began. The Humans enjoyed a raptureous response, several standing ovations and an encore, and I enjoyed a brief chat with Toyah before the show (I intercepted her on her way to the ladies room), and was thrilled to see that she is bursting with energy and fervor about what she does.

Belfast Telegraph: Woman: Toyah Interview 04 November, 2011
A great new interview with Toyah, published today by the 'Belfast Telegraph'.

Why Toyah has now got a new spring in her step

Singer Toyah Willcox literally bounces with energy as she buzzes around her kitchen preparing a cake for the ‘boys' in her band.

Liberal helpings of oats, grapefruit juice and cream cheese are ladled into a bowl while she simultaneously talks non-stop about her punishing touring schedule, learning to walk again, marriage and fame.

“Slow down!?” she says, visibly bristling at the very suggestion that aged 53 she might be considering slackening her pace, and suddenly she beats the cake mixture frighteningly hard.

Willcox explains: “My work is my life and I'm getting an enormous buzz out of playing to young people who hero worship the Eighties era.

“As a result, I often have audiences of around 40,000. It's extraordinary and wonderful and I want to enjoy it as long as my voice holds out.”

Sugar Rush: 'mxdwm.com' Review 04 November, 2011
More human than Human

Comprised of singer Toyah Willcox and bass players Bill Rieflin and Chris Wong, The Humans are a surprising group who combine waves of acid jazz, Massive Attack-like grooves and the occasional burst of ’80s pop and early ’90s industrial. It adds up to a mixed bag of tricks on their second album Sugar Rush, but still one worth a listen.

The album opens with “Titanium Girl” via a disjointed vocal “wah wah” effect before the ethereal voice of Willcox dances above it. Then it is slammed with a driving bassline and deep, guttural guitar pulses. After that, “Love in a Different Way” is a quiet, strummed track with a slightly ’80s feel thanks to the breathy vocals and synth. The same retro feeling is found in “Small Town Psychopath,” which mixes pure jazz club with a overdrawn beginning, as well as in “Sweet Agitation.” It seems with The Humans, the more subdued the song, the more it sounds like it would have been played in a late ’80s film.

Perthshire Advertiser: No Mystery... 01 November, 2011
No mystery behind Toyah’s successful gig in Kinross

Bundle of energy Toyah Willcox showed her true colours at Kinross. The punk-pop legend put in a tremendous turn at the Green Hotel where she played as part of her 30th anniversary From Sheep Farming To Anthem tour.

She took to the stage with a full, four-piece band, plus a backing singer at the trim venue, which boasts an incredible collection of rock and pop memorabilia.

Sporting an original outfit that had been preserved from her ‘Eighties heyday, the star rolled back the years with a performance that was full of vigour and no lack of style.

With an incredible, eye-catching wig atop her bonce, Ms Willcox made for a colourful attraction as she launched into her classic hits Thunder In The Mountains, It’s A Mystery and I Want To Be Free.

The Changeling: 1982 - 2012: 30th Anniversary 01 November, 2011
Wow! What a difference a tweet makes! I must confess... I was, after 12 years, going to retire this website at the end of the year but Toyah's tweet today: "Fantastic things happening for 2012! Its The Changeling's 30th anniversary so guess what's gonna happen!" has sort of "changed" that plan.

Rock Generation: 'FSF-A' Southampton Review 01 November, 2011
Toyah: The Brook, Southampton
Review by Ross Ferrone

Toyah Willcox-singer, actress, TV personality. Just for tonight though it will be singer. Southampton’s Brook is playing host tonight as we take a trip down memory lane with the 30th Anniversary Tour, rather aptly named “from sheep farming to Anthem”. Toyah is in fine form and good voice from the off tonight. Earlier she was signing autographs & smiling for camera shots but its the songs we’re here for.

She opens with ‘Good Morning Universe’ to great applause then takes a trip through the back catalogue...
