Evening News: Manchester Pride
31 August, 2011
Comeback
boyband Blue got the crowds dancing as
they brought this years Manchester
Pride Big Weekend musical extravaganza to
a close. The hunky lads closed musical
proceedings on Bank Holiday Monday fresh
from their exploits in Eurovision.
Toyah wowed the crowds in her
punk-tribal outfit and crown of pink
hair. She told The Diary
backstage: This is an original
outfit from 1981 that I wore on Top of
the Pops and, thankfully, I still fit in
it. But I get the hairpiece specially
made these days back then it would
be all my own hair styled into those
creations but would take an entire
day.

Party Like it's 1985
27 August, 2011
Today's
'Financial Times' Life & Arts
features a huge article on the recent
'Rewind Festival', and 80's pop festivals
in general. Toyah contributes and is also
pictured on the front page of the print
edition.
Why are we so enamoured of a
brash decade of big hair and shoulder
pads? The answer might be found at a
popfest
... Toyah Willcox thinks its about
personality music.
Everyone in the 1980s had huge
personalities and I think that came
across in the writing and the
performing, she says. Willcox, 1981
winner of Smash Hits most
fanciable female award, first
noticed signs of a 1980s revival about a
decade ago. The 1990s were quite
tough doing gigs. Then around 2000 it got
really serious. The gigs got
bigger.

Willcox At Wig Out
23 August, 2011
A
news article about one of Toyah's
forthcoming PAs is included in the latest
issue of 'Boyz' magazine.
TBB has learnt that 80s pop goddess TOYAH
WILLCOX is planning a performance of her
latest track 'Fallen' at Wig Out next
month.
We also know that Paul Masterson - he of
Yomanda, Candy Girls, Hi-Gate (with Judge
Jules) and many other aliases - has
written and produced the track. Paul's
previously worked with Kylie and Boy
George too, so this next title is bound
to be a hit.
And what's more, GaydarRadio DJ Phil
Marriott made the song his 'Anthem of the
Week' last week.
Toyah's filming the video to 'Fallen' in
Norway early next month too, so expect
some exclusive shots gracing these pages
soon!

Drivetime's Gareth James on stage Sunday
with the likes of Toyah, Go West, Candi

another amazing weekend.

enjoying the glorious sunshine for the

We had our cameras out in force, so why

The official press screening for The
Power of Three - where three older women
come together to show you are never too
late to fulfil your dreams. Starring
Toyah Willcox and 60s bombshell Margaret
Nolan (Goldfinger).
The Power Of Three
A feel good movie for women of a
certain age.
So far we've had a hot Diane Keaton in
Something's Gotta Give, a naked Helen
Mirren in Calendar Girls, and Meryl
Streep as an inspirational business woman
in It's Complicated. Now The Power of
Three brings us not one, but three women
of a certain age three strong,
humorous women who all have an
unfulfilled dream but find themselves
stuck...until they come to harness The
Power of Three.

Humans: UK Dates Announced Today
19 August, 2011
The
eagerly awaited UK live dates for The
Humans will be officially announced and
confirmed today.
THE
HUMANS ANNOUNCE TWO OCTOBER UK SHOWS
& TICKETS
The Humans, the experimental band project
featuring R.E.M's Bill Reiflin, Toyah
Willcox and Chris Wong have announced two
UK shows for October.
The Humans were formed after Toyah
Willcox was asked to tour Estonia by the
Estonian ambassador back in 2006. Wilcox
formed the band and proceeded to showcase
their material during three live shows in
Estonia in Autumn 2007. The three shows,
which were attended by many governmental
dignitaries including the Estonian
president, sold-out in under 24 hours!
According to Toyah Willcox's official
website www.toyahwillcox.com, The
Humans are an experimental band project,
featuring Bill Rieflin (R.E.M.), Toyah
Willcox and Chris Wong. According to
toyahwillcox.com, "The Humans live
show is song based but the songs are
deconstructed down to the bones of raw
experience exposing human nature and
irony. Comparisons are always misleading
but if The White Stripes met with the
vocal adventures of Lou Reed, Kate Bush,
Gabriel and Beefheart then you might get
a flavour of things to come..."
The Humans will see the American release
of the album 'Sugar Rush' on 27th
September.
The Humans UK Live Dates are as follows:
October 2011
Oct 4th - Ruby Lounge, Manchester
Oct 6th Bush Hall, Shepherds Bush,
London
The Humans tickets are onsale from 9am on
Friday 19th August.

Moonlighting
19 August, 2011
R.E.M.
drummer Bill Rieflin is moonlighting as
one of two bass players on the album
Sugar Rush, the second offering from
Toyah Willcox's avant-garde rock trio the
Humans. Willcox is a British actress,
author, musician and wife to Roxy Music
guitarist and prog god Robert Fripp.
Sugar Rush is due to drop Sept. 27 via
Seattle label the End Records. Although
the group's lineup is technically rounded
out by Willcox, Rieflin, and fellow bass
player Chris Wong, Fripp lends his guitar
work to each of the album's 13 tracks.
Keep an eye out for more U.S. tour dates,
which should be announced soon.

Toyah: TV Times (1982)
18 August, 2011
A voyage round Toyah
Willcox: By Jane Ennis / Pictures Brian
Aris. Published on 25th April 1982.
Toyah Willcox,
actress, rock star and cult figure - the
wearer of black leather-studded clothes,
flame-coloured hair and death-mask make
up - says that her appearance has
'nothing to do with gimmicks.
I'm obsessed with the idea of alien
breeds and what we may all look like in
the future. The way we are experimenting
with genetics fascinates me. Crossbreeds.
Mutations. Great!' The 4ft 11in dynamo is
settling in for an all-night recording
session at a north London studio. Dressed
as ever in black, she plonks herself
heavily in a chair and puts her chunky
forearms on the table in front of her: a
solid, purposeful figure swigging wine
out of a paper cup. 'The way I chose to
look a few years ago used to frighten
people. I was about three stone heavier
and very broad. I was like a muscle
woman. Taxis wouldn't stop for me.
Conductors wouldn't let me on the bus. At
one stage I had all my hair shaved off
the back of my head, leaving long points
at the sides. My mother chased me out of
the house.'

Tara Winter Uncovers The Many
Faces Behind The Make-Up
1) Toyah is a dilletante, dabbling in
fashionable performance arts for sheer
self-gratification.
2) Toyah is a violent sub-cult, fronted
by a spitting vixen, getting her kicks
from other people's boots.
3) Toyah is an egomaniac, keeping the
musicians in her group in neutral tones,
in the dark, out of the picture.
4) Toyah is arrogant, difficult,
unreliable, and wears all that make-up to
hide acne.

bleary salesmen and snaking hoovers that
characterise preprandial hotels. We would

there was a plane to catch. Tom, Toyah's
boyfriend/minder, set the alarm on his

From 1986 until its closure, Chris ran

Live: Toyah's 'Secret Life'
14 August, 2011
Toyah guested on
yesterday morning's Saturday Live
on 'BBC Radio 4'. Talking about
meteorites, and more, in their 'Secret
Life' series.
Richard Coles with critic Tom
Dyckhoff, poet Kate Fox, paralysed rugby
star Matt Hampson, designer Kenneth
Grange, Toyah Willcox's Secret Life and
Steve James' Inheritance Tracks.
Richard introduced Toyah thus: Do you
remember the safety pin divas, the short
and sweaty summer of Punk? Siouxsie
Sioux, the late lamented Poly Styrene,
Laura Logic and occupying a slightly
different place the actor and singer
Toyah Willcox.
Today she is well known as a writer and
television presenter too, perhaps the
only person to have presented both the Good
Sex Guide and Songs Of Praise.
Back then as Miranda she rattled and
lisped her way through Derek
Jarmans marvellous punky version of
The Tempest and it was she who
skipped up and down on a spot in pixie
boots singing 'Its A Mystery' on Top
Of The Tops. Well, mystery no longer
for here she is in confessional mood.
There were also plays of clips of 'This
Belongs To You' by The Humans and 'It's A
Mystery'.
Saturday Live is available,
until next Saturday morning, to listen to
again at BBC iPlayer
(Toyah appears approximately 25 minutes
in). There's also a podcast of
the programme for download. 'The Toyah

Mail: Toyah Says 'Bring Back

Pop
star Toyah leads drive to bring back
kids' TV hero Brum
Pop star and actress Toyah Willcox is
backing a campaign to bring
Birminghams most famous TV car back
to the small screen. Superhero motor Brum
was based on an Austin 7 Chummy
convertible and five series were produced
by Ragdoll Productions from 91 until the
show ended in 02.
Singer
Toyah even penned her support for the
drive to get Brum back on TV. She said:
Happy birthday Brum. This feisty,
adventurous little car has entertained
millions of children worldwide for two
decades and deserves his best birthday
yet.
Wherever I go in the world people
tell me their children grew up watching
Brum. His go-getting nature has
encouraged children to be confident and
his wheels have spread the name of
Birmingham across the UK and many other
places in the world. You are a brave
little car!

Quadrophenia Night II will combine a
screening of Franc Roddams cult
classic movie with a live music
experience featuring performances by two
top bands.
The Quik will perform a set which takes
its inspiration from the original sixties
hits that feature in the movie while The
Whoo will round off the night with their
high energy tribute to British rock
giants The Who with a set that will
include tracks from the Quadrophenia
album.
To help add to the atmosphere we invite
you to attend dressed in the styles of
the era depicted in the film and display
your scooters and motorcycles on the
theatre forecourt.
Sunday
Times: Home: Punk Shock
13 August, 2011
Although
Toyah tweeted in early June that she had
just completed a photo session for a
feature with 'Sunday Times', this cover
feature for their 'Home' section,
published on 17th July, seems to have
come and gone with no fanfare.
Punk
Shock: Revealed: Toyah's Secret Passion
For Antique Furniture
A House Built On Rock:
Richard Barber visits the oddly genteel
home of the former punk Toyah Willcox and
her guitar hero husband...
The magazine featured a two-page article,
complete with a Toyah interview and a
selection of photos of Toyah, Robert and
their home, as well as a small classic
Toyah shot.
This is the second occasion that
Toyah has been the cover star of 'Home'.
She previously featured on their cover
back in May 2004.
Uber Rock:
Rebellion Festival 2011: Review
13 August, 2011
'Uber
Rock' have a comprehensive review of the
'Rebellion Festival 2011', including an
interesting take on Toyah's 'From Sheep
Farming To Anthem' set, from a, self
confessed, non fan Ian Bell.
I had been looking forward to catching
Toyah live as she was always one of those
artists from my youth that I quite
admired but would never have claimed to
be a massive fan of, but with classic songs
such as 'Mystery' and 'I Want To Be
Free', an acting career including a role
in the classic film Quadraphenia it would
be simply rude not to catch her live at
Rebellion, there is the day time and naff
TV show appearances but there's no need
to mention them is there.
The heavy hitters from the classic
'Anthem' album such as 'Demolition Men',
'Obsolete', and 'Thunder In The
Mountains' raised the crowd from its
keyboard induced paralasys and rightfully
gained the applause deserved. And with an
encore that included both 'It's A
Mystery' which went down extremely well
as did 'Danced' the disappointment was we
didn't get 'I Want To Be Free' or 'Good
Morning Universe', but that's me just
being picky. Toyah certainly lived up to
her reputation her tonight and continued
to divide the opinions of those who
witnessed her set. I mean is she a
(former) pop star, is she an actress, or
is she as she once so elquently put it
"a Punk Rock icon?" I'm perhaps
not the one to answer that million dollar
question, but maybe you are?

Rock' website, here.

Gaydar
Radio: Paul Masterson
Interview/'Fallen' First Play
11 August, 2011
The
producer of 'Fallen', by Yomanda feat
Toyah, Paul Masterson was interviewed on The
Phil Marriott Show on 'Gaydar Radio'
earlier this evening. Paul also
introduced the first worlwide play of
''Fallen'.
An angel's fallen through...
the edge of time
Phil Marriott: It's a
very exciting time for you, because
you're about to unleash this big beast
called 'Fallen', which of course is your
collaboration with Toyah.
Paul Masterson: Yeah,
indeed, absolutely. Well I've been an
absolutely massive fan. I remember buying
Toyah's records when I was still living
in Belfast, like '81, '82, '83, and it
was one of those artists I've always had
my eye on to write a song with, and a few
months ago I sent her an instrumental
piece and she absolutely loved it, and
then we got together in the studio about
a month or so ago and we recorded the
vocals. I've just spent a few weeks
mixing it, and it's all finished and
ready to go, pretty much.
Read a full transcript of the
interview here.
'Fallen' is Phil's "Anthem Of The
Week". Response to tonight's first
play was so strong that Phil played it
again at the end of his show, and he will
play it again on Club Nation
tomorrow night. A preview of 'Fallen' can
also be heard at Soundcloud.

Put
The Needle On The Record: New
Book
11 August, 2011
'Put
the Needle on the Record: The 1980s at 45
Revolutions Per Minute' by Matthew
Chojnacki, is available from 28th August
by Schiffer Publishing.
The book features classic 7 and 12"
single artwork from the 80's. The
'Facebook' page for this included Toyah's
'Ieya' 12" cover so that may
possibly be featured.
In the 1980s, music defined the moment:
"Video Killed the Radio Star"
ushered in MTV, "Don't You (Forget
about Me)" ruled The Breakfast Club,
and "I Still Haven't Found What I'm
Looking For" became the anthem of a
generation. The 1980s were also the most
visually provocative era of the last
millennium. Every new vinyl single hit
the stands wrapped in eye-catching
sleeves that reflected the latest trends.
Put the Needle on the Record is pop
culture historian Matthew Chojnacki's
definitive guide to 7- and 12-inch vinyl
single artwork from the '80s. He presents
and compares more than 250 vinyl single
covers, representing nearly every
prominent musician of the decade. Read
the previously untold stories behind the
1980s' most iconic images from the
designers and visual talent behind
Madonna, Prince, Adam Ant, Pink Floyd,
Queen, The Clash, Pet Shop Boys, Kate
Bush, and more.
Coupled with exclusive commentary from
more than 100 of the '80s biggest
musicians, including Annie Lennox, Duran
Duran, Run-DMC, Gary Numan, The B-52's,
Erasure, OMD, Scorpions, The Knack, and
Yoko Ono, this is an authoritative
journey back to the songs and images that
continue to influence our culture.
Contains a foreword by Jake Shears of
Scissor Sisters and an afterword by Nick
Rhodes of Duran Duran.

Windsor
Express: Review: Here and Now
Tour - Ascot
10 August, 2011
Heart-throbs
and hairstyles of the 1980s were indulged
by thousands at the after party of an
afternoon at the races on Saturday,
writes Nicola Hine.
Musical
memories were revived for many as the
popular 'Here and Now' tour rolled into
Ascot, attracting everything from
squealing hen parties armed with
launchable underwear to families with
young children.
... Resplendent as ever in a red and
orange cape, Toyah delighted fans from
underneath a mohican-style hairpiece
which would give even Gaga a run for her
money.

News: Harrogate Fringe Puts Town
On 'Cool' List
10 Aug, 2011
One
night in Harrogate two weeks ago at
exactly the same time, writes Graham
Chalmers, 'indie' singer Edwyn Collins
was performing with a quintet from the
Scottish Philharmonic Orchestra at an art
exhibition in Cold Bath Road, Toyah
Willcox was bounding on stage in an
outrageous costume at Harrogate Theatre,
a weird and wonderful post-rock band from
London called Teeth of the Sea were sound
checking at Katana bar at the back of
Debenhams and cult icon and author Howard
Marks was giving a talk about crime
writing and his drug dealing past at the
Old Swan Hotel.
At that precise moment Harrogate was
probably the most happening place in the
UK, outside of London. This unlikely
scenario was partly the result of the
Fringe and partly the result of Harrogate
International Festival which gave birth
to the Fringe.

Closer
(2005) / First (2007): Toyah
Looks Back
7 August, 2011
Toyah has been successfully
recreating some of her past looks, while
updating them for 2011, recently for the
'From Sheep Farming To Anthem' tour and
selected other live dates. Back in April
2005 and January 2007 Toyah looked back
at a couple of her 80s images for
'Closer' and 'First' magazines.
Closer: Back To The 80's:
"I've wanted a facelift for 20
years. It changed my life for the better.
When I look in the mirror, I see the
energetic and feminine person I feel like
inside. Not some woman past her
prime."
Of the 'Be Proud' recreation Toyah
commented: "I wouldn't be able to do
this if I hadn't had the surgery. I'd
look like a desperate woman trying to
recreate something long-gone. Instead, it
feels a bit mad - but good."
First: Back
To The Future: "The '80s
were an amazing time to be a pop star. I
was only 23 when I hit the big time, so
it was incredibly exciting.
I had very clear ideas about my image and
how I wanted to look - as you can see
from this photo. It took all day to get
the make-up right. It was shot for my
official Christmas card in 1981. I sent
out 10,000 copies to all the members of
my fan club and I had to hand sign them
all. That's dedication.
Back then pop was a real boy's club and
female singers were supposed to look very
pretty and feminine, but I had other
ideas. And so did Hazel O'Connor and
Siouxsie Banshee. Together we did our own
punk thing and everyone loved it. It
wasn't about stylists then, we put our
own looks together and lived and died by
them.
When I stopped singing, I branched out
into acting and presenting - I feel like
a classic all-rounder now. I'm a bit of a
workaholic and I'd hate to be sitting
around doing nothing. I had a facelift a
couple of years ago. It really boosted my
confidence and it's helped me stay
working in an industry that's obsessed
with looks. I'll carry on working as long
as I'm still in demand."

The
Humans: Sugar Rush: Samples @
Amazon
6 August, 2011
The
Humans second album 'Sugar Rush' is
released in September, and speculation
has now turned to anticipation and
excitement.
'Amazon' now have the album listed as a
forthcoming release, and not only that
they also have short audio samples of
each song, including the bonus track
'Small Town Psycopath (Full Mix
Version)'.
This sounds like it is going to be a
great album. Toyah's vocals are
incredible. I already love 'Sweet
Agitation' and 'Snow At 10.23' just from
the samples.
Listen to the previews.

6 August, 2011
Praise
for Rewind crowds amid hints it may be
back
The organiser of the Rewind Festival,
which saw more than 20,000 descend on
Scone Palace, has said he was delighted
with the event. Director David Heartfield
told The Courier the 1980s event went
"brilliantly" and did not rule
out a return to Perthshire.
Audrey Orr said, "It's been great.
We were one of the first in the queue to
arrive and one of the last to leave. I've
heard that it may be back in two years'
time and we'll definitely get tickets for
it. For me Billy Ocean stole the show and
Kim Wilde was brilliant on Sunday. Toyah
Willcox was also great."

Review
4 August, 2011
Rewind
Scotland - Day Two - A Review In Pictures
Rewind Scotland is a boutique festival
that celebrates the best in 80's Pop
music. The first Rewind event was
originally launched in Henley-on-Thames
in 2009, with the Scottish bash joining
it's brother as it moves into it's third year
at Henley.
All in all the music on offer wasn't as
appealing to me as the previous day but
there were a quartet of performances that
really stood out from the rest, with
colourful Pop Icon Toyah's set a joy to
shoot as she struck several great poses
while blasting out hits like "I want
to be free" and "It's a
mystery", watched from the pit by
husband Robert Fripp...

Journal: Toyah Brings Pink
Streaks Back
3 August, 2011
Toyah
Willcox Brings Pink Streaks Back
Singer
Toyah Willcox headlined at the 80s
Revival festival in Perth, Scotland this
weekend - and although her retro set-list
may have been a blast from the past, her
colourful hairstyle felt surprisingly
modern.
Pastel hues and grungy streaks remain hot
colour trends for the new season and
Toyah's baby pink shade works perfectly
with her creamy blonde tones - she could
have stepped right out of London's
famously colourful salon, Bleach!
Of course Toyah is no stranger to
colourful hair, having been a
trailblazing trend-setter throughout the
80s with her paintbox-bright locks and
experimental styling. Here's a previous
pink look from the punk princess: While
the feathering might be forgettable, this
raspberry ripple hue feels decidedly
modern.
Blackpool
Gazette: Punk's Back Again
3 August, 2011
The
punks are back in town... with the
worlds biggest punk festival
returning to Blackpool from Thursday
until Sunday this week.
Organisers claim its the best bill
yet for the annual event with
around 200 bands and other acts taking
over the entire Winter Gardens complex.
And with a line-up including punk legends
Cock Sparrers only UK appearance
this year as well as The Adcits, Jello
Biafra from the Dead Kennedys, Toyah,
Pennywise, Get Cape Wear Cape Fly and The
Damned heading to the resort, the
Rebellion festival is as diverse as ever.
Proving that punk rock is a varied genre
linked by a common cause, Rebellion is
the only punk festival which sees 1977
legends sharing the stages with the likes
of Rancid member Lard Frederiksens
new side project Old Firm Casuals and a
whole raft of young up coming punk bands
and even Eric Faulkners Bay

Rewind
Scotland: Toyah News Round Up
2 August, 2011
Toyah
tweeted
yesterday: "Rewind scotland was

Her short set-list at the festival was:
Thunder In The Mountains, Echo Beach,
It's A Mystery, I Want To Be Free.
STV:Organisers
hail success of Scone 80s music festival:
The Rewind festival saw nearly 25,000
revellers turn back the years at Scone
Palace over the weekend.
Organisers of an 80s music festival held
near Perth are considering a return to
the area after almost 25,000 turned out
for the event. Rewind saw thousands of
revellers turn back the years at Scone
Palace at the weekend. Festival bosses
revealed that an estimated 12,000 turned
out on both Saturday and Sunday to see
some of the biggest acts of the decades.
Toyah Willcox, The Human League and
former Spandau Ballet lead singer Tony
Hadley were
among the acts who entertained the
crowds. (stv.tv | 01 August 2011)
Herald
Scotland: Rewind,
Scone Palace, Perth: It
helped, of course, that the sun beat down
upon the well-appointed site below the
home of the earls of Mansfield and
historic Scottish coronation spot. But it
was just as important, I'd guess, that
this was a festival where the women
outnumbered the men (although the
costuming made it hard to tell one from
the other), the age range was as
all-encompassing as it could be, and
there were as many happy families as hen
parties, alongside random mixed
gender-groups of Smurfs and superheroes.
... Sunday's line-up built more
progressively with The Real Thing's
acapella exchanges with the crowd and
Toyah's remarkable hair notable waymarks
towards a lavish finale by The Human
League, which ran the full gamut from
Being Boiled to Night People by way of
all the hits we came to hear. (Keith
Bruce, heraldscotland.com | 02 August
2011))
The
Courier:Sun, songs
and silliness... Rewind Festival had the
lot: Massive hair,
outlandish costumes, garish dayglo
underwear, silver suits, thousands of
tanked up, happy people, a 92-year-old
fan, a cross-dressing wedding couple and
even a successful marriage proposal
the 80s Rewind Festival at Scone
Palace had it all.
Hit after hit came from 25 acts from the
1980s who set out to prove it definitely
was not the decade music forgot. The
audience agreed, with 20,000 people over
the weekend loving the sounds of the
Human League, ABC, Kim Wilde, Heaven 17,
Billy Ocean, Toyah Willcox, Nik Kershaw,
Imagination, China Crisis, The Real Thing
and Scots heroes The Bluebells, Hue &
Cry and Perth's own Fiction Factory.
Toyah Willcox strode off with the most
extravagant outfit of the weekend,
telling the audience her sideways
multi-coloured Mohican took 20 bottles of
hairspray and a lot of fake hair, and her
looks 20 years of plastic surgery. (Alan
Wilson, thecourier.co.uk | 01 August
2011)
Bob The Tog:Toyah @ The Scottish Rewind

to photograph of the entire weekend was
Toyah. The music was strange but the
amount of colour and life on stage was
excellent.

Be Free. Many thanks also to the support
Maeve OBoyle who travelled all the
way down from Glasgow to put in an
excellent performance too. Shame on you
if you missed this one!
You
Tubing with Blood Donor: 'Dr...?'
1 August, 2011
Blood Donor, Safari Records,
Doctor Who, Toyah, and some
interesting information thrown in for
good measure. Don't you just love 'You
Tube' (sometimes). 'Dr...?' (featuring
Simone), from 1980. This song is included
on Blood Donor's excellent album. (Thanks
to outofthegreenmist)
