Digital Spy: DS
Icon: Toyah Willcox
25th September, 2010
Toyah
has been inducted into the 'Digital Spy'
DS Icons Hall Of Fame. About time too ;)
Stars come and stars go, but few have the
enduring longevity of Birmingham's
favourite daughter Toyah Willcox. She
first came to the attention of the world
as a young punk in Derek Jarman's iconic
Jubilee in 1977 and bagsied even more
cult points two years later with a role
in Quadrophenia. She then fronted the
niftily-titled new wave group Toyah
(their highlight was the live album
Toyah! Toyah! Toyah!), winning the 'Best
Female Singer' gong at Brits precursor
the British Rock and Pop Awards in 1982.
She's
rarely been away since, acting in
everything from Quatermass to Secret
Diary Of A Schoolgirl and popping up on
our screens every few minutes as herself.
In recent years, she's clocked up credits
in a number of reality TV programmes and
gameshows; she's showed off rock husband
Robert Fripp in Celebrity Brides
Unveiled, braved the jungle in I'm A
Celeb... and boasted her smarts and
culinary skills on sleb specials of
Mastermind and Ready Steady Cook.
Somehow, she still squeezes in the time
to give those famous vocal chords a
workout, and currently fronts new group
The Humans.

interview on Tuesday's Lara King
Morning Show on 'BBC Radio

approximately eight minutes. Go here to

Energy FM: Totally
80s: Interview Transcript
21st September, 2010
A
transcript of Toyah's short 'Totally 80s'
interview, from 'Energy FM' last
Saturday.
They asked Toyah if she would go
back to the 80s:
I wouldn't go back there for all the tea
in China, but I was so much younger and
so much more inexperienced and it was
good fun, it was okay! I'm having a
better time now.
The 80s for me... I found it very
competitive, I didn't find the
camaraderie that I find now, back then.
It probably says a lot about me. I was
competitive, and I always wanted to know
my chart positions and the amount of
units I'd sold and all of that. It was a
tense time for me, so I really don't want
to go back there!
How would Toyah describe her
music? Punk? Avante-garde, perhaps?:
In the beginning it was, and then just
stumbled upon 'It's A Mystery', which was
a pretty respectable single. My music was
definitely rock but it had come out of
the punk era. All my music was geared
towards live performance so I felt I was
always a live artist rather than a
recording artist, and I pride myself in
thinking I was one of the best around at
the time. It was definitely high-energy
rock, anthem-for-stadium music.
We finish by asking for Toyah's
favourite memory of the decade:
There are quite a few of those. One was,
I played The Old Grey Whistle Test
live on Christmas Eve, 1981, and it was
the most perfect culmination of a perfect
year! I was tired and my voice was tired
but it just didn't seem to matter, I had
a great time and I don't think I'll ever
feel that high again.

Toyah To Star In Sleeping Beauty
19th Sep, 2010
A
new interview with Toyah, from the
'Worcester Standard', published on
Friday.
It may only be September but panto fever
has come to Malvern as the stars of
Sleeping Beauty hit the town to promote
the show.
The Malvern Theatres production, which
opens its doors on December 16, promises
to bring the magic and mystery of the
traditional tale to life with a high tech
production - complete with computer
generated images (CGI) and a fire
breathing dragon.
Pershore-based TV star and 80s punk
princess, Toyah Willcox, will be
indulging her dark side and taking a
leading role in the show as the Bad
Fairy. The actress and singer lives
minutes away from the theatre, and is
looking forward to spending Christmas at
home.
She said: Im really excited
because Malvern is local for me and
knowing that Im going to be at home
for Christmas is really, really nice.
Its a lovely place to come to, I
think the theatre is astonishing and when
you look at the size of the theatre and
the quality of what it does in an area as
relatively small as Malvern, its
excellent.
She added: Im really looking
forward to the panto because theres
some nice technology within it. I get to
fly and theres CGI and I get to
turn into a dragon and fly off so
thats exciting. Playing the baddies
is always the most fun and rewarding
thing to do, baddies can do anything and
its mostly accepted.

Toyah Live 2010: The
Horn, St Albans Tonight!
16th September, 2010
Toyah
plays a full band gig tonight at The
Horn, St Albans.
Speaking about the gig earlier this
month, Toyah said: Im really
looking forward to it because my bass
player is from that region so its a
bit of a homecoming for him.
I love performing live; its
incredible, she said.
The 'Watford Observer' recently ran a
short article on Toyah playing The Horn.
Toyah Willcox became well-known
during the punk rock era, through her
appearances in Derek Jarman's 1977 film
Jubilee, 1979s Who album-inspired
Quadrophenia, which launched her as a
provocative and anti-establishment
figure. Fronting the band Toyah, her
singing career was slow to take off and
the band released six singles in the UK
before finally hitting the charts in
1981, with Its a Mystery. This was
followed by several other huge hits
including Thunder In The Mountains and I
Want to Be Free.
View it at the 'Watford Observer'
website, here.

The Malvern Theatres' Autumn
Season digital brochure double-page promo
for Sleeping Beauty. Toyah is in
panto at Malvern Theatres (at the
Festival Theatre) this Christmas.
Malvern Gazette:
Panto Star Toyah Loves Being Baddie
16th Sep, 2010
A
new article on the very recent press
launch/photo call of Sleeping
Beauty from the
'Malvern Gazette'. This includes a brief
interview with Toyah.
Panto season may be some months away but
the stars of this years showing in
Malvern were in town this week to give
people a sneak preview of whats in
store.
The panto at Malvern Theatres this
Christmas is Sleeping Beauty and members
of the cast were at the theatre and out
and about in Priory Park showing off
their colourful costumes.
Punk pop star and TV presenter Toyah
Willcox is playing the bad fairy, a role
she is really looking forward to.
I love pantomime, this will be my
17th, and being the baddie is much more
fun than being good, she said.
Toyah loves the whole history and
tradition of pantomime and the fact that
in the rapidly changing world of
entertainment it is still an event, an
occasion, when families get together and
go out for a special treat.
Toyahs
opposite number, the Good Fairy, is
played by Australian singer and dancer
Wendy Lee-Purdy. Its my first
time in panto and Im looking
forward to it, she said. She is
particularly pleased that she gets to
really dress up.

the 'Malvern Gazette' website, here.

The Independent:
Ordeal by School
10th September, 2010
Toyah
is quoted in an article in Monday's 'The
Independent', about first day school
memories.
Ordeal by school: memories of that
terrifying first day
Toyah Willcox, Singer and Actress
When I was four-and-a-half I went to
Edgbaston Church of England College for
Girls and it was possibly the worst day
of my life. My mother dressed me in this
excruciatingly uncomfortable uniform
which I detested for the whole 14 years,
and drove me to school. I just screamed
and screamed and she had to come back. I
remember clinging to her. The spinster
who was our teacher was lacking in
warmth. When my mother came back to pick
me up on that first day, I thought that
was it, that there was no more school.

A
new interview with Toyah, from the
'Welwyn Hatfield Times', published on
Wednesday.
Eighties singer Toyah Willcox talks to
the Welwyn Hatfield Times ahead of her
forthcoming date at The Horn in St
Albans.
Actress, TV presenter, author and
provocative, anti-establishment figure
Toyah Willcox has undoubtedly
enjoyed a successful and varied career to
date.
Shes also had a successful career
as a musician and, it is in this guise
that she will be visiting The Horn in St
Albans next week, following the release
of her most recent studio album In the
Court of the Crimson Queen.
Speaking to the WHT ahead of the gig, she
said: Im really looking
forward to it because my bass player is
from that region so its a bit of a
homecoming for him.
Toyah first forced her way into the
public consciousness during the punk rock
era, with appearances in the films
Jubilee (1977) and Quadrophenia (1979).
To date, shes released 30 albums
and has had 13 UK Top 40 singles,
including Its A Mystery, Thunder in
the Mountains and I Want To Be Free,
making her one of the most successful
female solo artists in British music
history.
And although shes now 52, Toyah
said she is still passionate about what
she does.
I love performing live; its
incredible, she said.

I Was A Teenage
Toyah Fan: The Book?
2nd September, 2010
Chris
Limb's fascinating "I Was A Teenage
Toyah Fan" continues to grow and
grow...
Originally
intended as a short three or four part
series of blog entries about my
misadventures in pop music fandom at the
dawn of the 1980s, it soon became clear
that I had far more than a couple of
thousand words to tell and that
furthermore what I had to say seemed to
be of interest to more people than simply
those who had been Toyah obsessives such
as myself. The experience of being a
compulsive fan seems to be a universal
one, whatever the object of your
infatuation...
So far the story shows no
sign of slowing down despite the fact
that I'm leaving so much out. I do know
exactly where it ends, but as yet can't
predict how quickly I'll get there. This
page serves as a portal to the
installments written thus far; new
chapters will appear here automatically
when they're published.
In the meantime a lot of
people seem to be enjoying it and some
have asked me to rewrite it in more depth
and making a full length book out of it.
I'm very tempted as there's a lot tucked
away there in my memory. It would be
useful to know how many people would be
interested in buying one if it was made
available - would you? Do let me
know.

Toyah Fan/www.toyah.org here.
