Snow White & The Seven Dwarfs
Review
Excited children at this glitzy
panto might not have heard of Su
Pollard, but they certainly
respond well to her and take
great delight in booing her when
as the queen she declares herself
to be 'the fairest in the land'.
However, the older generation
clearly remember the actress for
her role as the dotty chalet maid
in Hi-de-Hi.
There is far more to Su than the
zany character she portrays both
on and off screen, as she has a
powerful singing voice that over
the years has won her roles in
numerous West End musicals.
As a children's television
presenter, Chris Jarvis knows
just what makes youngsters tick,
and he gets them on his side
within seconds. There is also
humour for mums and dads too with
impersonations of Bruce Forsyth
and references to the Weakest
Link.
He is an endearing and talented
performer with lots of energy as
his role as Muddles the Jester
requires.
Clear of voice and sweet as
candy, Rebecca Marks is an
enchanting Snow White, whilst
Jonathan Parkin has the looks for
the Prince - who says he comes
from Talbot Woods!

Su Pollard Facebook for some

Su Pollard Pops In To Castlepoint
Panto stars
Chris Jarvis and Su Pollard
brought some Christmas cheer to
Castlepoint yesterday. Christmas
shoppers at the Bournemouth
shopping park were tempted with a
fresh apple from the Wicked Queen
(Su).
But these were no
poisoned produce they had
been donated by Sainsburys
and the Society of Growers of Top
Fruit. The cast, including all
seven dwarves, arrived at
Castlepoint in a cavalcade of
cars specially chosen to match
each character. These were
supplied and chauffeur-driven by
the Westover Group.

Daily Echo - Snow White & The
Seven Dwarfs Review
The Pavilion has landed itself an
80th birthday celebration cracker
with this festive family treat.
CBeebies presenter Chris Jarvis
is back to star in and direct his
fourth Bournemouth pantomime,
joined by legendary comedy star
Su Pollard and their combined
talents are simply magical.
A traditional pantomime that
stays true to the story book,
featuring Disney songs like
Im Wishing and Whistle
While you Work, it is packed with
hilarious current references and
upbeat pop songs too.
Snow White the beautifully
voiced Rebecca Marks, sings Some
Day My Prince Will Come but also
belts out Alexandras Bad
Boys. And Su, typically
outlandish and exuberant as the
Wicked Queen, performs
Robbies Let Me Entertain
You, whipping the audience up
into a singing, clapping and
laughing frenzy. The mix of old
and new is spot on.
Chris builds brilliant comedy
impressions and voices into his
character Muddles, from Frank
Spencer to Alan Carr, The
Simpsons, Bruce Forsythe- and
even Sus famous Hi-de-Hi
character dithering chalet maid
Peggy!
It really is one of the funniest,
happiest pantos.

At 5.10pm the countdown began and
Sportacus and the pantomime cast

from the crowd.
Heart FM presenter Caroline
Verdon praised the pantomime cast
for helping to keep spirits high
in the unpleasant weather.

.The
Sentinel - Chalet Maid Peggy Is
Full Of Praise For Title
A short
interview Su gave to 'The
Sentinel' last month, talking
about Rob Cope and Mike Fury's
recently published 'The Hi-de-Hi!
Companion' book.
Peggy Ollerenshaw was hugely
popular as the chalet maid with
dreams of becoming a Yellowcoat.
And it was the actress who made
the role her own, Su Pollard, who
first got Rob into the hit show.
Su said: "Rob is the ideal
person to write this book because
he is very meticulous about his
work and has a great interest in
the show. But he has also had
rare access to people such as
myself in getting information and
he has wanted to make sure
everything he puts in is correct
and unembellished.
"More importantly, he has
been able to convey just how good
these shows were and give an
insight into what we did and how
we did it."
Su, currently touring in a stage
production of Annie, ahead of a
panto appearance in Bournemouth
this winter, said the book had
brought back the fun cast and
crew had during recording.
Su said: "Being able to go
to work every day knowing we were
going to fall about laughing was
absolutely lovely and I think Rob
wanted to get that across to
readers as well.
"It is lovely to have him
take such trouble over his book.
I think he has done a tremendous
job and I hope it will spur him
to do other things as well."

of Su Online news for numerous
related reviews, interviews and
media reports.
The stars have been
coming out to light up Christmas
in London.
Hollywood actor Jim Carrey pushed
the button to activate the
Christmas lights at Oxford Street
recently and singer Mariah Carey
was last night scheduled to turn
on the lights of Westfield Mall.
Movie star Nicholas
Cage is switching on the lights
in Bath and pop star Mr Hudson is
throwing the switch in Blackpool.
Bournemouth has a long
tradition of starry
switch-on ceremonies, with the
honours being performed over the
years by such celebrities as
Esther Rantzen, Buster
Merryfield, Stefan Dennis and
EastEnder June Brown.
This year the switch will be
flicked by Hi De Hi star Su
Pollard, childrens TV
presenter Chris Jarvis and
LazyTown character Sportacus on
Sunday.
But in Poole, the recession has
put paid to a big
production switching-on
ceremony altogether.
Like last year, we just
havent got the budget to do
a switch-on that will satisfy the
needs of the public, says
Richard Randall-Jones, Poole
town-centre manager. Weve
been hit hard by the recession,
our income is down and were
not in a position to buy any more
lights this year. It costs a lot
of money for a one-off evening
and youre dependent on the
weather. Our theme this year is a
back to basics
Christmas.
Despite the lack of stars,
however, the town centre did mark
the event earlier this month with
the well-attended arrival of
Santa Claus. And while the
recession may have struck the
town centre of Poole, there will
be celebrities turning on other
Christmas illuminations in the
area.
Annie:
Alexandra Theatre, Birmingham
By Chrissy Symmons
A heart-warming
and festive tale
The heart-warming tale of Annie
brought a festive atmosphere to
audiences at The Alexandra
Theatre this week.
If you are looking for a great
family-friendly show ready for
the Christmas season then the
production of Annie in Birmingham
is the one to go to.
The popular and wellloved
musical brings the tale of a
little orphan girl to life with
classic tunes including
Its a Hard Knock
Life and
Tomorrow.
The professional cast included Su
Pollard, from Hi-Di-Hi!, as Miss
Hannigan and David McAlister,
from East Enders, Brookside,
Hollyoaks, as Oliver Warbucks.
But the most impressive actor of
the night was Lydia Tunstall who
played the role of 11-year-old
Annie.
She acted her part superbly
capturing the cute, cheeky and
lovable rebelliousness of her
character with a hint of
vulnerability. Her singing was
also impeccable and kept the
audience entertained from
beginning to end.
Su Pollard added humour to the
performance as the drunk and
grumpy Mrs Hannigan while Simone
Craddock, as Grace Farell,
brought some romance.
Annie:
Alexandra Theatre, Birmingham
By Theresa Millington
We love
you Ms Pollard
On arriving at The Alexandra
Theatre there was a real air of
excitement, it seems everybody
loves Annie. Playing on the
opening night to a packed house
we were in for a delightful and
thoroughly entertaining evening.
This production starred the
wonderful Su Pollard as the
sloshed Miss Hannigan and even
though Miss Hannigan is a
baddie played by
Pollard one cant help
somehow feel for her, she is as
pitiful as she is humorous;
Pollard portrays her in a comedic
fashion and we are even treated
to flashes of her legs and under
garments receiving the
appropriate response from the
audience. Su Pollard has been
treading the boards for over
three decades now that
must be how she keeps her pins in
shape.
The dashing Oliver Warbucks is
played by David McAlister, he
really is very dashing and
although a very busy business man
he warms to Annie and also to
Grace Farrell much to the relief
of and to great sighs of
happiness from the audience. (It
seems everyone loves a love story
too!) The sets are impressive
showing the drab and dingy
interior of Miss Hannigans
orphanage compared with the
opulent, plush surroundings of
the Warbuck mansion.
The nominees for the
2009 Manchester Evening News
Theatre Awards were announced
earlier this month and Su is
nominated for an award for her
role in Annie.
Su is included in the category
"Actress In A Visiting
Production" for her

at The Lowry in Salford. The

BLYTHE DUFF, in Be Near Me at The
Lowry
LISA OHARE, in Mary Poppins

The winners will be announced to
an audience of stars from stage,
TV and film at this years

Annie: Grand
Opera House, York
By Charles Hutchinson
Hi-de-Hi! star Su
Pollard is celebrating her 60th
birthday in York this week and
there is no hi-de-hiding from her
typically excitable performance
as the heavy-drinking Miss
Hannigan.
You may recall Miss Pollard
playing this bibulous role five
years ago to the very month at
the Grand Opera House, and, if
anything, she has turned up the
comedy button another notch in
the corniest of Broadway
musicals.
In twisted stockings and
seen-better-days cardigan, her
Miss Hannigan cradles a bottle
and runs the New York City
Municipal Orphanage with wild
abandon and a shrill whistle.
Rather than the hard-hearted,
intemperate harridan of yore, she
is more of an erratic figure,
drunk and disorderly but comical
too, and Miss Pollard is closer
in style to a silent-movie comedy
star, all exaggerated slapstick
gestures, looking for a laugh at
every turn.
Please
return to Su Online tomorrow,
Su's 60th birthday. To help
celebrate the special day we will
be adding birthday updates to the
site, in the form of a redesigned
Gallery and a new look Features
section, featuring a library of
Su interviews, reviews, features,
articles and news items.
.Southern
Daily Echo - Whirlwind Su So In
Love With The South
A great
new interview with Su, from the
'Southern Daily Echo'. Su
remembers past experiences in
Bournemouth, and more:
There was no missing zany actress
Su Pollard on two recent visits
to the south coast.
The exuberant entertainer was in
Bournemouth preparing to star in
the towns Christmas panto
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
at the Pavilion Theatre.
And despite fast approaching her
60th birthday, on Saturday, she
wasnt toning down her
flamboyant dress sense,
regardless of her conservative
image of the south coast:
Oooooh! I love it down here
I say its where the
gentle-ladies
live! she enthused,
breathlessly talking ten to the
dozen, as she bounded down the
towns pier.
She certainly turned a few heads
as she swept into the resort like
a kaleidoscopic whirlwind. She
had taken the train from her
north London home dressed in tiny
denim shorts, jazzy leggings,
luminous green leg warmers,
leopard-print shoes, sequinned
top, a ton of necklaces,
multi-coloured bangles, odd
earrings, bright pink sparkly
glasses all topped off
with a studded dog collar.
It was all a far cry from her
famous TV character Peggy
Ollernshaw the dithering chalet
maid in Hi-de-Hi, but all very
much in keeping with her title
Campest woman in
Britain!
She popped into an exhibition
celebrating the Pier
Theatres 50th anniversary
and met up with comedy star Syd
Little and CBeebies presenter
Chris Jarvis, who directs the
Bournemouth Pavilion panto this
year while also starring as
Muddles The last time Su had
played the Pier was some 15 years
ago.
She recalled that every time she
had played the Pier something
pretty dramatic had happened
including almost getting
blown up.
It was August 1993. I was
in Dont Dress for Dinner
with Lionel Blair, Vicki Michelle
and Les Dennis and we got to the
theatre early because we had a
matinee to do and we wanted to do
a warm-up but there was all sorts
of a kerfuffle going on.
I walked into the theatre
to be told we might have to
cancel the show because they had
found a bomb under the pier. They
had managed to defuse it because
it hadnt been fixed
properly.
Its frightening when
you think what could have
happened but God was on our side
that day.
Su was
interviewed, earlier this week,
on BBC Look North. The
interview, featuring some great Annie
photos, is available to watch
online at the BBC York &
North Yorkshire website.
Su Pollard is
treading the boards at York's
Grand Opera House this week in
the musical Annie. She speaks to
Look North about the role and her
career.

So now we know who saved America
and the world in the Great
Depression of the 1930s.
Annie was more than a musical; it
was educational and painted a
picture albeit
lighthearted of the
effects of a recession similar to
the one that we are currently
experiencing.
It should have been made
compulsory viewing for
politicians and audience members
converging on Venue Cymru for
Question Time a couple of nights
after the opening of the musical.
Little Lydia Tunstall was superb
in the title role, but even she
was upstaged by the cameo
appearances of a dog called
Danny, an award winner in Crufts
and in his eighth tour of Annie.
The blend of nine kids and Annie
worked perfectly, with Su Pollard
interacting superbly as the
inebriate orphanage manager Miss
Hannigan.
The storyline could not fail to
impress, and with many families
in the virtually sold- out first
night, it was just like a
pantomime with discipline.
The heartstrings were really
tugged, but in a measured,
marvellous way by a superb cast
sympathetic to the message of
love and hope.
The result introduces a fabulous
feelgood factor that is way off
the scale and a tonic for anyone
looking to beat off the
depressing news currently being
fed to us on a daily basis.
