JUNE
2009 NEWS:
.Ambassador
Tickets - Su Pollard, Queen of
stage and screen, on Annie
The
undisputed queen of alternative
fashion, Su Pollard, has a lot to
celebrate in 2009!
Star of stage and screen, Su
Pollard, most famous for her
roles in Hi-De-Hi and You Rang
MLord? is preparing a
radical dress down for her role
as the dastardly Miss Hannigan in
ANNIE which is coming to
Glasgows Theatre Royal from
4th 8th August.
Having just completed a tour with
Claire Sweeney in the massively
popular Shout! which ended with a
transfer to the West End in the
spring, 2009 continues to be a
year of celebration for Su. Aside
from celebrating her 30th
anniversary of her very first
sitcom, Two Uo, Two Down with
Paul Nicolas in broadcast in
1979, Su is also getting ready
for a 30th Anniversary cast
reunion of Hi-de-Hi and more
importantly celebrating her 60th
birthday in November!
Speaking about playing the part
Su said: Miss Hannigan,
although shes obviously a
lover of the bottle - she adores
Jack Daniels and thats the
basis of her existence -
shes had a terrible life,
she wanted all sorts of things
that she was aspiring to be,
probably even a Broadway star,
but shes ended up in an
orphanage looking after these
dreadful, snotty, terrible kids
that give her the run-around.
Joining Su is David McAlister
(Hollyoaks, EastEnders, Mike
Bassett TV and Brideshead
Revisited) as the billionaire
businessman, Oliver Warbucks.
Joining Su and David will be
pupils of Glasgows
Starstruck stage school who will
be taking on the roles of the
Orphans.
Annies adventures from Miss
Hannigans orphanage to the
luxurious home of Oliver
Warbucks, is a story that has
been told all over the world for
decades. First seen on stage in
1976, the show really does
deserve its reputation as one of
the best loved family musicals of
all time!
With a memorable score including
Its A Hard Knock Life, Easy
Street and of course the
legendary Tomorrow along with
brilliantly visual choreography
and a side-splittingly funny
script, you will remember ANNIE
as warm and funny as the first
time you ever saw it!

.The
Internet Glasses Company - Specs
Super Heroes!
Su Pollard
has been in the news in the last
couple of weeks, as attention has
been brought to her individual
clothes sense. We applaud those
who dare to be different
and who wouldnt wear red
lace tights and a denim ra ra
skirt if they had legs like Sus!
Well we always admired Su for her
stunning eyewear she can
do funky plastic frames like no
other well almost ..
Any glasses frame with a vaguely
upswept shape can be described as
a Dame Edna another
Celeb famed for her outlandish
eyewear. Who could forget the
frames with the Sydney Opera
House across the top of them? Who
would want to remember them?!
Timmy Mallet returned to the
public eye last year thanks to
Im a Celebrity.
He used to rival Su for the
biggest, most colourful frames
around. Nothing was too
outlandish for Timmy and
when we saw him in the jungle we
were pleased to see he
hadnt changed
The other iconic specs wearer we
could never forget was that
screen siren from Coronation
Street, delicious Deirdre. While
she was wowing Ken she was wowing
us with her eyewear. The glasses
got bigger as the plot got
hotter, and many of look back
fondly on our Deirdre days.
Nowadays things are positively
staid with the likes of Anne
Robinson sporting very stylish
specs, and even Dr Who
doesnt wear anything out of
this world. Thank goodness Su is
back in the news!

Britain and the British Railway,
back when the greatest challenge
in rail travel was getting a
decent cup of tea.

from 20th July 2009.
Shes
without a doubt the star of 60s
musical Shout! She wears whatever
the hell she wants. She wants to
be reincarnated as a gay dog. We
give you the legendary Su Pollard
Hello is
that Su?
Ooh ello. [Comedy scream followed
by dial tone and my laughing] Yes
dear! Ooh its a dismal day,
I cant wait for the show to
cheer us up. I know it sounds
camp, Ive got the heating
on, such a wuss.
So, 60s musical Loving the
frocks.
Ooh the costumes are fabulous, a
lot of them are vintage! You
think to yourself they must
have been well made, 40
years on and theyre still
in pristine condition. And the
megamix looks great because
its all Union Jacks and
fabulous knee-length PVC boots.
In fact when we were on tour this
bloke said My wifes
in for a good night tonight when
I get home. I think he got
the hots for us in our boots.
And youve become quite
famous for your own choice in
clothes recently
I know, I cant believe
that, I were only going to the
shops. The great thing was it
couldnt have come at a
better time, it was great
publicity for the show. Lets put
it this way, Ive always
liked off-the-wall stuff. The 60s
for me, I absolutely adored all
the Mary Quant stuff. It was just
such a marvellous decade.
And theres a
storyline about one of the girls
in the show falling in love with
a gay man...
Its not just all about
clothes and fashion, theres
lots of things. Women still
falling for blokes and not
knowing they were gay. It was as
relevant then as it is today. My
ex-husband was gay, for a start.
A lot of people might not know
that. But a lot of women have
done that, and will continue to
do so. She obviously doesnt
marry him in the end. Were
surround by gays in the audience.
They love it. They love Dusty and
all that. Im going to see
Priscilla tonight, have you seen
it?
Yeah, its great.
Is it camp as arseholes? Ooh
fabulous, cant wait! How
exciting. Ooh, Ive got to
tell you, my greatest joy in life
is that last year I was voted the
campest woman in Britain! It was
even better than being voted Rear
of the Year! Im a great
lover of the gay world. Im
not Dora Dyke but Im coming
back as a gay mans dog,
Ive decided because they
have the best life in the world,
gay mens dogs. Im
going to call myself Randolph.
Wouldnt it be great!
One of those dogs thats
completely dressed up?
Ooh yes! Oh darling, hed be
covered in diamante and Vuiton
shoes. Id be the most
fantastic gay mans dog.
Outrageous
personality, Su Pollard, dropped
in to chat about her latest
project, a touring production of
Annie
A natural performer, Su Pollard
knew from the tender age of six
that she belonged on the stage,
after playing an angel in her
school nativity play, falling
through a box, and cracking the
entire audience up.
From that moment she was hooked
and it was clear her future lay
in performing.
Su tried to get her big break
with an appearance on the TV
show, Opportunity Knocks in 1974,
singing I Cant Say No from
Oklahoma but finished
second behind a singing Jack
Russell terrier.
But she didnt let that stop
her from pursuing her dream,
going on to appear in shows
including Hi De Hi, You Rang
MLord? and Oh, Doctor
Beeching!, as well as a number on
stage roles.
Now shes appearing in a new
production of Annie, which is
touring around the UK.
Speaking about playing the part
of the bullying, heavy-drinking
owner of the orphanage, Miss
Hannigan, Su said: Miss
Hannigan, although shes
obviously a lover of the bottle -
she adores Jack Daniels and
thats the basis of her
existence (its)
because shes had a terrible
life, she wanted all sorts of
things that she was aspiring to
be, probably even a Broadway
star, but shes ended up in
an orphanage looking after these
dreadful, snotty, terrible kids
that give her the run-around, so
that is her solace, in
drink.
Su added: She wears no
make-up, its fantastic for
me, she has a terrible wig with
an awful pink chiffon scarf,
shes trying to make the
effort because she still flirts
but of course she never gets
anywhere because she smells! And
shes got fleas but I
like to think you can empathise
with her because so many people
aspire to things.
Annie is showing at
Glasgows Theatre Royal from
August 4-8 and at the Eden Court
Theatre in Inverness from July
20-25.
Su appeared
on yesterday's The Hour
on STV. She was guesting to talk
about the forthcoming Annie
tour. The show can be viewed
online and is available here for the next month.
