18 2006: 'Snow White
& The Seven Dwarfs' -
The Stage review |
Working
on the adage that if
aint broke,
dont fix it,
Mansfield has pulled out
the stops for another
cracker of a show. This
production is as
traditional as plum
pudding but with a few
surprise and choice
morsels among the
padding.
Su Pollard
proves to be a Hi-de-Hi!
light, combining the
evil-minded Wicked Queen
with a lust-filled
figure-of-fun, thus
removing the fear factor
so often prevalent in
panto villains which can
scare tiny kids.
There are a
couple of new names for
the dwarfs but the seven
little fellas are
somewhat underused in
this production and
arent given the
chance to let their
different characters
shine through. More
scenes like the
break-dancing dwarf would
make a good panto even
better.
The singing is
as good as Ive ever
heard at the Palace,
particularly from Simon
Leigh as the Prince,
Hollie Taylor as Snow
White and Mark James as
the loveable comedian
Muddles.
The story itself
treads the same tried and
tested path and
theres little in
the way of special
effects.
But references
to Ant and Dec, Catherine
Tates
bovvered
catchphrase and Im
A Celebrity bring it bang
up to date, striking a
chord with the
telly-addicted kids.

10 2006: 'Mansfield
Today' - Have a Wicked
Christmas! |
At
long last the panto
season is about to get
underway in Mansfield and
Nottingham! Oh
no it isnt! Oh yes
it is!
As each year
comes to an end every
family eagerly awaits to
see which pantos are
coming a
chance for youngsters and
grown-ups to enjoy the
theatre together and get
into the festive spirit
with some timeless tales
and classic characters.
This year the
Christmas line up is
spectacular and audiences
will be spoilt for choice
with three top shows
taking place from
November to January at
three theatres across the
county - Mansfield Palace
Theatre, Nottingham
Playhouse and Nottingham
Theatre Royal.
The star-studded
shows are already proving
Christmas crackers with
ticket sales going
through the roof, so fans
are being urged to get
their tickets now before
the popular pantos sell
out. And families are not
just reminded to bring
their tickets but to come
along with plenty of
cheers, hisses and boos.
Snow White
& the Seven Dwarfs
The
Palace Theatre will, no
doubt, be filled to the
brim when fast-talking
comedy and panto
sensation Su Pollard
plays the Wicked Queen in
Snow White and the Seven
Dwarfs. Her charisma and
presence is sure to set
the stage alight for the
hugely popular story of a
beautiful and charming
little princess who was
raised by her step-mother
- the vain, Wicked Queen.
The evil Queen
orders a huntsman to take
the princess into the
woods to be slain, but he
cannot do it and lets her
go Snow White then
takes refuge with seven
dwarfs who help
protect
her from her horrible
mother.
Su Pollard is
joined by a quality cast
including Shaun Curry,
from Just Good Friends,
as her henchman and
rising comedy star Mark
James as Muddles the
Jester.

10 2006: 'Snow White
& The Seven Dwarfs' -
BBC Review |
Snow
White and the Seven
Dwarfs
Reviews
by: Lydia (12) and Ruth
Kellett (10) A
fantastic family
atmosphere at the Panto
in Mansfield. Plenty of
"oh no he
isn't" and
"he's behind
you!"
Lydia's
review:
Muddles
Mark
James who played the
Jester Muddles stole the
show for me. I loved the
faces he pulled, the
swing in his walk and the
way he swayed, nervously,
when he proposed to Snow
White. He was so silly I
couldn't help laughing.
Su Pollard
The
evil queen played by Su
Pollard was another of my
favourites. She was funny
and she showed off a
spicy side when she sang
'Let Me Entertain You'.
Although at times I
thought she could have
been a little more evil!
Dwarfs
They
amazed and really
impressed me. I'm
used to seeing the parts
played by children rather
than dwarfs. They
all managed to show off
different personalities.
'Silly' in particular,
said a lot without
talking once!
Prince
I
was slightly disappointed
to see the Prince being
played by a man rather
than a woman. I felt it
went against the rules of
pantomime but felt
cheered up when he kissed
Snow White to make her
alive again. I understand
that wouldn't have worked
as well if he'd been a
girl.
Show
It
was a packed show, with
great sets and sound
effects and I enjoyed the
dancing too. I laughed
most of the way through.
On the down side, I was
disappointed that there
was no dame character,
although Muddles filled
the gap well.
Ruth's
review:
I
really enjoyed the show,
from the start to the
end. They got the
audience going which made
it more fun to watch.
The best part
was when Muddles got
people on stage doing the
tongue twister
"Court of King
Caracticus".
My favourite
character was Muddles the
Jester because he kept
making silly faces and
noises.
I liked the
dwarfs because they all
started off like they
didn't know Snow White
and then they were really
caring, and they used
real dwarfs not
children.
Watch out if
you're near the front
because there's a few
surprises for the
audience. I'd certainly
go again.

10 2006: Christmas
Crackers... from the BBC |
And a cheery
hello to you
all
.. As
we are all too well
aware, Christmas is
rapidly, and indeed
happily approaching us
all well I say
happily, its more a
case of terror when you
consider the elbow
budging around the shops

risk of the kitten nearly
decapitating herself
again as she sprints her

attractive tinsel display

Anyway, between
my periods of excitement,
I have made a list of all
the David Croft releases

4 2006: Celebrity Big

Su has been
mentioned in a number of
recent articles regarding
potential, and rumoured,
celebrities who may
appear on the fifth
series of Celebrity
Big Brother, due to
air in early January
2007. Metro:
Fans of Girls Aloud
beauty Sarah Harding may
be about to see a lot
more of her.
According to
newspaper reports, the
stunning singer could
star in Celebrity Big
Brother when it returns
to Channel 4 in
January.
"Sarah's
our dream girl. We're
working on a mix of stars
for the show, but she's
the one we've set our
hearts on," an
insider told the Daily
Star.
The rest of the
Big Brother wish-list
reportedly includes TV
presenter John Leslie,
41, singer Duncan James,
26, and ghost-spotter
Derek Acorah, 57.
US singer Grace
Jones, 58, drag queen
RuPaul, 46, Hi-Di-Hi's Su
Pollard, 57, and 80s star
Adam Ant, 52, may also
appear.
But it's the
blonde Something Kinda
Ooh singer, 25, producers
believe would really
spice up the reality TV
show.
"She could
name her price," the
insider added.
Previous
contestants have included
Take That's Mark Owen,
George Galloway MP, and
model Caprice, and it was
the show that made
unknown Chantelle
Houghton a star last
year.
[ News Soure:
www.metro.co.uk - Tuesday

Digital Spy: Celebrity
Big Brother producers are
head-hunting Girls Aloud
singer Sarah Harding for
the show's next series,
according to a report.
Bosses have
decided the pop star,
glamour girl and media
favourite would be the
ideal candidate to draw
viewers, the Daily Star
has claimed.
Sarah's
our dream girl," an
insider told the paper.
"Were working

Other names
apparently high on the
shortlist are
controversial former-Blue

veteran American singer
Grace Jones and
cross-dressing star
RuPaul.
Producers also
hope to entice ex-Blue
singer Duncan James,
Hi-De-Hi star Su Pollard,
