21 2006: 'The Guardian' -
Dad's Army star bemoans
state of TV comedy |
A star of
arguably the UK's
favourite sitcom
yesterday condemned the
quality of contemporary
shows, claiming that TV
writers are not getting
the right training.
Bill
Pertwee, who played air
raid warden Hodges in
Dad's Army, said: "I
only watch something I
really want to watch. I
had the best of it in the
early years. Now they try
to make their point by
being too aggressive. If
they can't fit a joke in
a line they put a
four-letter word
there." He
added: "We can make
the lines come off the
page, but the lines have
got to be there in the
first place. I don't
think the writers have
learnt the trade like
they used to. Dad's Army
used to take five months
to get together, now they
do shows in three weeks.
"I
just wonder why they
don't concentrate more on
characters and
situations. Steptoe and
Son, Dad's Army, and Till
Death Do Us Part had
marvellous situations -
the jokes got there
themselves."
Pertwee, who
turned 80 in July, was
celebrating the launch of
his autobiography, A
Funny Way to Make a
Living, with guests
including Hi-De-Hi! star
Su Pollard and forces'
sweetheart Dame Vera Lynn
at the Imperial War
Museum in London.
He said of how
he became an actor:
"I had no talent ...
I was still
window-cleaning at the
time but I decided to
have a go. The only
reason I decided to go
into the business was to
work in London, which
seemed rather nice, and
because the girls were
rather nicer than boring
window cleaners.
"I was at
the right place at the
right time. It was
nothing to do with talent
at all. I didn't have
any, I didn't know
anything. Dad's Army's
David Croft and Jimmy
Perry [the writers] were
looking for somebody that
wasn't really an actor.
"My agent
said, 'I've got someone
just right for you, he's
not really an
actor'."

'Huddersfield Daily
Examiner' - The Fairest
Cop! |
A Huddersfield
policeman has been
crowned Mr Gay UK 2006. Pc
Mark Carter, 23, was
voted Britain's sexiest
gay man at Blackpool's
Flamingo Club.
About 50 of his
colleagues came to cheer
him on, and he had the
full backing of West
Yorkshire Police in
taking part in the
contest.
As one of 23
regional finalists, he
wore a police-style
outfit with a stab-proof
vest for a "dress to
impress" section.
Then he stripped
down to swimwear to
reveal his tanned, toned
body to celebrity judges
including Big Brother's
Lea, Su Pollard, Rowetta
and Anita Dobson.
Mr Gay UK is
chosen via text votes and
on-the-night voting, on
the basis of looks,
personality and
'X-factor'.
Competition
organiser Terry George
,says: "Mark is a
great example of a young
gay man achieving his
goals in life. If anyone
assumed it was just
bimbos that entered
competitions like this,
Mark's proving them
wrong."
Second place
winner was sailor Sam
Connell, Mr Plymouth, and
third was Mr Brighton,
Luke Perkins, a town
planner. Other entrants
included a sports
journalist and a
lifeguard.
Su Pollard said:
"All the guys were
superb, and I'd have
liked to take some of
them home with me! I
pulled a muscle, but
that's about all."

3 2006: 'The Vagina
Monologues' - BBC
Nottingham review |
A
great review of The
Vagina Monologues at
the Nottingham Royal
Concert Hall, which
finished its week-long
run last night in Su's
home town: The
Vagina Monologues @ The
Royal Concert Hall
Get
ready to shout out loud
and be proud to be a
woman as the Vagina
Monologues is back in
town.
It was my second
time seeing the three
woman stage show, so I
knew what I was in for
and in no way did
Wednesday nights
show disappoint.
For monologue
virgins, I should explain
that the production
created by Eve Ensler is
in fact a montage of
soliloquies based on
interviews of 200 women
of all ages and from all
walks of life.
We hear from
young women exploring the
wonders of womanhood for
the first time to more
distressing tales from
victims held at a Bosnian
rape camp during the
countrys recent
conflict.
As usual, the
trio pulled no punches in
their on stage recreation
of the probing
interviews.
Su Pollard
revelled in being on home
turf and had the audience
in stitches from the
moment the spotlight
revealed her trademark
glasses until curtain
down.
But this was not
to say that the rest of
the trio were upstaged.
Myleene Klass,
famous for her stint in
reality spin-off band
Hear Say, gave an
effortless performance
that was both hilarious
and moving.
Nikki Sanderson,
best known for her role
as feisty Candice in
Coronation Street, had
only done the show once
before but no-one would
have known as she worked
the crowd with ease and
took her fair share of
the laughs.
It goes without
saying that the audience
were mostly female but a
few brave men had crept
in and seemed to be
enjoying themselves as
much as us girls.
This is not a
show for the faint
hearted but I suggest
ladies and open-minded
gentlemen across our fair
county should catch this
show before it leaves
town on Saturday.

3 2006: The Story of
Light Entertainment |
Su popped up
briefly on last night's The
Story of Light
Entertainment (Part 7
- Chat Shows) on BBC2. A
short clip from the
(in)famous Oliver Reed
interview on the Aspel
& Company show in
1984 was shown as part of
last night's look at the
chat show genre.
Michael Aspel
versus Oliver Reed, 1986
He
might have been the first
UK chat show host to have
a serving Prime Minister
appear on his show, but
it was the appearance of
Oliver Reed, not Margaret
Thatcher, for which he is
destined to be
remembered.
Having obviously
taken advantage of the
green room refreshments,
Reed stumbled on to the
set and Aspel threw out
any hope of sticking to
the running order.
Resigned to the
well-documented
eccentricities of the
actor, Aspel and previous
guests Su Pollard and
Clive James were suddenly
relegated to members of
the audience as he
performed an impromptu
rendition of The Wild
One.
It was far from
note-perfect, but as
Aspel witnessed his show
spiralling out of
control, he also knew
viewing figures would
soar.
