30 2006: 'Louth Today' -
Su's a fundraising star
for the Spar |
Flamboyant
celebrity Su Pollard has
come up trumps for
charity fundraisers at
Sutton on Sea's Spar
shop. The
popular star, who has
appeared in such comedy
favourites as Hi-De-Hi!
and You Rang M'Lord, was
doing a spot of shopping
in Tate's Late Shopper,
in the High Street, when
duty called.
Staff member Sue
Biddulph said Su was just
great. She said:
"Su's parents live
in Sutton on Sea, so she
does pop in occasionally
for a few groceries.
"When she
found out we were
fundraising for the
British Heart Foundation,
she just stopped what she
was doing and came and
helped us to sell raffle
tickets!"
The
Nottingham-born actress
now lives in London, but
regularly comes to Sutton
on Sea to visit her
parents Don and Hilda
Pollard.
Along with panto
and TV appearances on
shows like Blankety Blank
Su has also enjoyed a
successful singing
career.
The British
Heart Foundation is the
Spar's chosen charity for
this year and, with Su's
help, staff raised more
than £470.

May
26, 2006: 'Ashfield
Today' - Triple success
for the Palace |
The champagne
corks are popping at
Mansfield's Palace
Theatre after it was
revealed a
record-breaking 100,400
visitors flocked through
its doors in the past 12
months. And
delighted bosses at the
Leeming Street venue say
the rip-roaring success
is expected to continue
with sales for this
year's panto Snow White
already topping 12,000
a huge rise
on the same period for
last year's runaway
success Peter Pan.
The phenomenal
rise in theatregoers
visiting the Palace has
swelled attendance
figures by more than
17,600 in just three
years.
Says delighted
manager Andrew Tucker:
"A triple success is
good in anyone's books! I
am delighted with our
continuing success and
immensely proud of what
our small team has
achieved. Most
importantly I must thank
our audiences for their
continued and growing
support."
And this year
visitors can once again
catch a variety of
productions at the
Palace, with highlights
including the popular
community theatre group's
comedy drama based on
Mansfield's old hospital
and, of course, Snow
White starring
Nottingham-born comedy
star Su Pollard.

May
19, 2006: 'EDP24' - Open
day honours Dad's Army |
A sideswipe at
modern TV comedy was
delivered yesterday when
stars of still-popular
comedy programmes from
yesteryear wisecracked
with thousands of fans at
an open day to honour the
BBC TV series Dad's Army. A
serious note about the
standard of today's shows
came amid the clowning
and laughter as each star
was introduced to the
crowd during the event at
Bressingham Steam Museum,
near Diss.
It came from
legendary BBC producer,
director and writer
Harold Snoad, who said:
Our programmes last
and last and last because
there is no comparison to
the stuff that, I'm
afraid, they call comedy
nowadays that's on the
box.
He added:
I'm sorry - but
it's true. There's no
warmth, characters you
can't recognise and with
all this in-your-face
stuff, it seems to be
more important to be
different than it is to
be funny.
His comments
were echoed later by Bill
Pertwee - grumpy chief
warden Hedges from Dad's
Army - who got the
biggest laugh when he
first was introduced to
the crowd and lived up to
his character's
reputation by joking:
We're all looking
forward to another boring
day with you!
Mr Pertwee, who
said how much he always
enjoyed the open day and
meeting his fans, showed
his serious side later by
adding: I think
programmes like Dad's
Army are as fresh and as
popular now as they were
when they were first
screened because they are
just genuinely funny.
It is
good, straight-forward,
uncomplicated humour that
people can understand.
It's in the great
tradition of Laurel and
Hardy, Buster Keaton and
the silent films of their
era.
He said:
Dad's Army was
well-written, the
characterisation was
brilliant and the story
lines always kept the
viewers interested and,
most importantly, kept
them laughing. I don't
think the same could be
said of many comedy
programmes on TV
today.
Sipping a cup of
coffee and munching a
biscuit in the VIP
refreshment room, Clive
Dunn - former Lance
Corporal Jones, who flew
in specially from
Portugal for the day -
commented: I really
love coming to Norfolk
and it makes me very
happy to think that Dad's
Army is still so
popular.
Among fans at
the event was Swaffham
town and district
councillor Ian Sherwood.
Clutching Clive Dunn's
recently-obtained
autograph - completing
his set of the
programme's stars - he
said: I come here
every year because I have
always been a huge Dad's
Army fan.
It
reflects a period we can
all imagine and it was
extremely well-written.
The humour is just as
funny now as it was
then.
Actors from the
wartime Home Guard comedy
plus Hi Di Hi, It Ain't
Half Hot Mum and You Rang
M'Lord who were taking
part in the day also
included Su Pollard,
Linda Regan, Brian Murphy
and Donald Hewlett.
The event takes
at Bressingham because it
is the home of the Dad's
Army Museum.
NB:
Unfortunately, as already
stated, Su wasn't able to
attend this event.
