19, 2005: 'The Stage' -
Snow White review |
The big
difference between this
Snow White and others
Ive seen is that
the seven inhabitants of
Snow Whites forest
refuge are played by real
dwarfs. Each is able to
establish individuality
so the relationship
between them and their
beautiful fugitive has
real emotional charge. Their
delightful Snow White is
Rebecca Trehearn proving
that sweet innocence
neednt be pale and
insipid. Her charm and
genuine niceness had
little girls in the
audience firmly rooting
for her. Ive rarely
heard so many young
female voices so
vociferous with advice
for their heroine.
As the queen,
Sue Pollard in a glittery
black dress is more
demented than wicked,
stomping about in
frustration when thwarted
and engineering some nice
hissing and booing.
Andy
Collins Muddles has
instant rapport with the
audience, shaming
reluctant adults into
making fools of
themselves and being
especially good with the
young volunteers on
stage. His finest moment
is a wildly anarchic
Twelve Days of Christmas.
Shane Dalton
sings well as a nicely
stuck-up prince. Shaun
Curry looks sinister as
the queens henchman
but isnt given
enough villainy or comedy
to make much of an
impact.
Overall
its a fine family
pantomime and those
dwarfs really make a
difference.

December
19, 2005: 'North Wales
Daily Post' - Mirror
Mirror |
There
was magic in the air as
the curtain rose on a
classic fairytale this
week, with insiders
claiming it could be a
record-breaking year in
Rhyl. Snow
White and the Seven
Dwarfs, featuring a
stellar cast including Su
Pollard and Rebecca
Trehearn, opened at
Pavilion Theatre on
Monday, and is already
shaping into a massive
hit.
"Ticket
sales are going very
well, we are actually up
on last year, which was
our best year, so it
looks like it is going to
be a record-breaking
year," said deputy
manager Val
Simmons.
And she says
audiences will not be
disappointed, as the
theatre continues to
break new ground.
After months of
searching, seven
real-life dwarves have
been found, the smallest
of whom - Di - is only
3ft tall.
"It is a
first for the Pavilion,
and it is the only way UK
Productions, who have
produced the show, will
do it. When you see them
first come on, it is so
exciting," added Mrs
Simmons.
One of the stars
of the show is
undoubtedly Su Pollard,
best known as zany Peggy
in Hi-De-Hi.
The actress, who
has concentrated on
theatre work in recent
years, was last in North
Wales in 2001 in Dick
Whittington at the North
Wales Theatre with
Celebrity Love Island
contestant Paul
Danan.
And the role of
the Wicked Queen should
come naturally to her -
this will be her third
panto appearance in the
role in four years.
In addition, the
theatre has reaffirmed
its commitment to
showcasing the best in
local talent by casting
Rhyl girl Rebecca
Trehearn in the lead.
According to Ms Simmons,
the S4C Waw Factor winner
has the potential to be a
pantomime favourite, as
her star continues to
rise.
"She has
been doing really well
and has recently appeared
in a musical version of
Alfie, with Darren Day,
as one of his
girlfriends.
"There will
be a lot of musical
numbers in Snow White and
she sounds so beautiful -
it really is going to be
magical."
Also in the cast
is Andy Collins, a
warm-up man for Ant and
Dec and Paul O'Grady, and
there is a TV crew in
Rhyl doing a documentary
on him.
Andy, who hosts
Family Fortunes on ITV,
plays Muddles, and is
joined by TV veteran
Shaun Curry, who plays
the Wicked Queen's
henchman. As usual, the
team of youngsters
providing support come
from Gay Harris Dancers
and the North Wales
School of Dancing.
"Rehearsals
have gone really well,
and I think it is going
to be fantastic,"
enthused Mrs
Simmons.
* Snow White and
the Seven Dwarfs at the
Pavilion Theatre runs
from now until Saturday,
January 7, with both
matinee and evening
performances. Tickets are
priced from £5.75 to
£13, with special group
rates. More information

You
Rang, M'Lord? -
Series One (Two Disc Set)
is now available to
pre-order at Amazon UK.
The DVD is available to
buy from Monday 6th
February 2006. In
the trenches during the
First World War, two
soldiers come across the
unconscious body of an
officer. Assuming that he
is dead, one of the men,
Alf, attempts to rob him,
much to the disgust of
his companion, the
steadfast James. When
they realise that he is
alive they carry him to
safety, and the officer,
the Honourable Teddy
Meldrum, tells them that
he is forever in their
debt. Nearly ten years
later and we find that
Meldrum has repaid his
debt to James, who is now
serving as 'head of the
household' to Teddy's
brother Lord Meldrum, a
factory-owning
aristocrat, and his
sprawling family.
Following the death of
the butler, shifty Alf
Stokes reappears on the
scene and is duly
appointed as the new
butler, much against the
wishes of James, who
remembers all too well
Alf's criminal
tendencies.

December
12, 2005: 'Rhyl &
Prestatyn Visitor' - Su's
wicked as the evil queen |
Su Pollard is
noisy, gushing and pally.
Exactly as you'd hope
she'd be. The former Hi
De Hi! actress, who
played chalet maid Peggy
Ollerenshaw in the 1980s,
is sitting in her
three-storey townhouse in
London's King's
Cross. When
I ask if she's
disappointed to be
playing the Wicked Queen
rather than Snow White in
this year's Rhyl panto,
she utters a hearty,
husky laugh.
"Can you
imagine! I'd never get
away with it. I'd have to
be like Bette Davis in
that film of hers. She
had to be filmed behind
gauze!" She is
looking forward to
playing the Wicked Queen
alongside local actress
Rebecca Trehearn as Snow
White this month.
Trehearn won S4C's
Wawffactor contest this
year.
Pollard, 56,
said: "Rebecca is
very personable. I think
she's going to be great.
I said to her 'You lucky
old BAG! You can stay at
home during the season
because you're from
Rhyl'.
"Rebecca
and I get two or three
wonderful scenes where
I'm the Wicked Queen
masquerading as an old
hag.
"We're
trying to build it up so
kids in the audience
scream like mad when they
know she's going to bite
into the apple. You've
got to make every scene
as believable as you can
and to get the story
flowing."
Pollard has been
to Llandudno before:
"We did Dick
Whittington with Paul
Danan (of Celebrity Love
Island and Hollyoaks
fame). I really enjoyed
it. The only thing was,
I'm a nightbird. But
Llandudno and Rhyl seem
to shut at
5.30pm."
Still, bosses at
the Pavilion Theatre are
doing their bit. They're
painting Pollard's
dressing room pink - at
her request..

20, 2005: 'You Rang,
M'Lord?' - DVD |
The long,
make that l-o-n-g,

finally happens this
coming February. The
complete first series
will be available to buy
on a two disc set as of

episodes but this is
possibly an error and the
pilot episode (titled,
funnily enough, 'You
Rang, M'Lord?') will also
be included.
You Rang,
M'Lord?: Series 1 (2
Discs):
Working class
chancer Alf Stokes (Paul
Shane) and James
Twelvetrees (Jeffrey
Holland) first meet as

in France during the

find the body of an
officer and, assuming
that he's dead, Alf robs
him of his valuables.
Then they find that the
officer, the Honourable
Teddy Meldrum (Michael
Knowles), is still alive
so they carry him off to
a field hospital.
Ten years later,
James is working in the
household of Teddy's
brother, Lord Meldrum
(Donald Hewlett). Alf
suddenly turns up and is
taken on as the new
butler, against James'
wishes. Alf's daughter,
Ivy (Su Pollard) also
starts working in the
household as a parlour
maid but her relationship
with Alf is kept
secret...

Perry and David Croft,

Croft and Roy Gould.
Starring: Donald Hewlett,

November
20, 2005: 'North Wales
Daily Post' - HI-HO,
hi-ho, it's off to Rhyl
we go. |
After months of
searching Rhyl Pavilion
has finally found seven
people of diminutive
stature to play dwarfs in
its Christmas panto Snow
White from Friday Dec 9
until Saturday January
7. The
theatre acknowledges that
actors who fit the
specific criteria are in
high demand at
Christmas.
And that's made
it tough to find a full
set of dwarfs, but in
recent years Snow White
has been one of the most
popular panto's the
Pavilion has ever
hosted.
And this year
should be no exception so
the effort has been worth
it as the theatre
confirmed it has a full
complement of
dwarfs.
'The
company we use has two
productions of Snow White
this year so needed to
find 14 dwarfs,' said a
theatre
spokeswoman.
'But we do
things properly here and
made sure we had seven
authentic dwarfs.'
Away from the
dwarfs the outrageous Su
Pollard heads the cast
list.
Best known
for her role as Peggy in
the BBC comedy Hi-de-hi,
Su plays the Wicked Queen
with gusto and a slightly
crazy hair style.
Rhyl girl
Rebecca Trehearn returns
home after winning S4C's
X Factor-style show Waw
Ffactor to play Snow
White while former Family
Fortunes presenter Andy
Collins and veteran TV
tough guy Shaun Curry
also star.
'We all hope
this will be the biggest
and best panto North
Wales has ever seen,'
said Su.
'Snow White
has something for
everyone, it's such a
colourful and bright
production.
'And I get to
sink my teeth into a
brilliant scary role as
the Wicked Queen!
'I'm thrilled
to bits to be performing
in Rhyl. I was in panto
in Llandudno two years
ago and it was
fantastic.
'Welsh
audiences are so
welcoming, they really
join in and don't judge
you like they would down
South. I love Snow White
and don't mind getting
booed as the Wicked
Queen, you soon get used
to it.'

priced from £5.75-£13

the crazy character at

Ruth is on the

Scene VI
Two people are

that even a chance

death. Fifteenth century

October
13, 2005: 'An Actor
Despairs' - The ultimate
survival guide for
performer |
Su
was recently interviewed
by the 'An Actor
Despairs' website: We
asked a selection of our
best-loved celebs the
same 3 questions. Here's
what they replied...
1. What did
you do to generate income
between acting work
before your career took
off?
Su
Pollard: I was fortunate
in that I was a speed
typist so therefore
worked as a temp. Also I
made sandwiches in a pub
and worked at Godfrey
Davis car hire cleaning
the cars - a sort of
valet service. I also
cleaned houses - very
difficult - no
labour-saving devices. In
short, I CHOSE to pay my
rent so that meant doing
any REASONABLE job I
could find.
2. At what
point in your career did
you get your 'break' and
how did this come about?
Su
Pollard: I was appearing
in a Cameron Mackintosh
production of Godspell
and one night an agent
came to see it. He was
representing Jesus and
had come to support his
client. Afterwards the
agent introduced himself,
asked if I would consider
representation and left
his card. I was so
elated. He was absolutely
instrumental in getting
me the part of Peggy
Ollerenshaw in
'Hi-Ee-Hi', so really, I
consider my first 'break'
was getting represented
by a well-respected agent
who believed in me and my
potential.
3. What do
you feel would be the
best piece of advice you
could give to someone
starting out in the
profession?
Su
Pollard: Believe in
yourself. NOT
COCKY. Just confident
enough. Never expect,
just HOPE, i.e.as in
being given a part. BE ON
TIME!!! Punctuality is
essential. It is a
statement of intent, i.e.
you are committed to the
job and are respecting
what is required of you.
Respect your director and
choreographer. Do not
make the mistake of
thinking they have to
prove themselves to you.
Remember, their
experience elevates them.
Respect them and they
will respect you. You may
even find yourself in
more of their productions
simply because of the 'P'
word, PROFESSIONALISM.
