Theatreworld:
The Vagina Monologues
Tuesday
28 June Saturday 2
July 2005
THE
VAGINA MONOLOGUES returns
to Sheffield this season
and its as feisty
and funny as ever.
Hilarious and profoundly
moving by turns the show
continues to be the
ultimate girls
night out while providing
essential knowledge for
all genders.
Based on author
Eve Ensler's 'Vagina
Interviews' conducted
with women from all
around the world, THE
VAGINA MONOLOGUES gives
voice to a chorus of
uproariously funny and
thoroughly human stories
about women and their
sexuality. The script is
drawn from the
experiences of a diverse
group of women ranging
from a Long Island
antiques dealer to a
Bosnian refugee and
explores the humour,
power, pain, outrage and
excitement hidden in
vaginas. Sex has never
been funnier or more
poignant than in this
collection of highly
original stories.
Its as sharp and
witty as SEX AND THE
CITY, as unmissable as
FRIENDS and as funny as
SMACK THE PONY.
This multi-award
winning show has been
performed by a variety of
remarkable women. This
production will star the
actress, singer, model
and recent BIG BROTHER
contestant Caprice,
HI-DI-HI favourite Su
Pollard and Ellen Thomas
perhaps best known for
her role as Liz in
TEACHERS for Channel
4.

25, 2005: 'Waltham Forest
Guardian' - Evergreen Su
is the Hi-de-Hi surprise |
Su
was featured in the
'Waltham Forest Guardian'
last week... Neighbours
who opened their gardens
to the public were joined
by a surprise celebrity
guest.
Su Pollard, the
actress most famous for
her role in BBC sitcom
Hi-de-Hi, called in last
Sunday to look around the
five gardens in Elmsdale
Road, Walthamstow.
The event was
organised as part of the
National Garden Scheme to
raise money for the
charities, Marie Curie
Cancer Care and Macmillan
Cancer Relief.
Just over
£1,300 was collected
from the sale of tickets,
refreshments and cakes.
Chris Franche,
organiser and Elmsdale
Road resident, said
around 200 visitors
helped to make the day a
great success.
Neil Gerrard, MP
for Walthamstow,
officially opened the
gardens and enjoyed
taking a look round.
Ms Franche said:
"This was the first
year that we've had such
a well known celebrity
joining us. It was great.
"Su Pollard
is a friend of one of the
neighbours and she
stopped by for a couple
of hours, had a good look
round and chatted with
the visitors.
"The day is
really about community
spirit and trying to help
the charities. Everybody
had a good time and we're
hoping to hold the event
again next year."

April
7, 2005: 'Islington
Gazette' - They won't get
me in the jungle, vows Su |
Su
was interviewed by the
'Islington Gazette' last
week. The interview was
also published in the
'Tottenham, Wood Green
& Edmonton Journal': It's
25 years since classic
comedy Hi De Hi! left our
TV screens - but kids
still call at Su
Pollard's home asking for
Peggy.
Su, who lives
off Liverpool Road,
Islington, made her name
as the Maplins maid who
dreamed of being a yellow
coat.
And it is a
measure of the show's
enduring popularity that
so many still remember
it.
"I never
mind people coming up to
me and saying 'Hi De
Hi!', especially some of
the younger ones -
especially when you think
it was 25 years ago
now," says Su.
"It's been
repeated recently on UKTV
Gold, which is how they
know me.
"I don't
like to disappoint them
so when they ask for
Peggy, so I always say
'No, I'm afraid Peggy's
not here at the moment
but I'm sure she'll be
popping back later and
I'll tell her you
called'."
Su has spent the
past weeks appearing in a
line-dancing competition
on Channel Four's Richard
and Judy.
"I'm not
too bad at dancing.
However, I always say I
have trouble with my
balls - the balls of my
feet that is. It's my
weight transference.
Singing comes far more
naturally to me.
"I am quite
slow at learning dancing.
I do get there in the end
but have to go over the
moves. I won't go into
the jungle like Jordan
did - but I will do
line-dancing."
Su, 55, first
came to Islington in the
1980s when she rented a
flat near Upper Street.
"It was what some
people might call a bit
of a dodgy area
then," said Su.
"It was
before it perked up, but
I thought this area had
potential. I liked it
straight away and I've
always loved living
here.
"I love Mr
Patel the newsagent over
the road from my house in
Liverpool Road - they've
got everything you could
want, and I love the way
I can walk to the West
End.
"I love all
my neighbours and the
people you meet here are
marvellous. Everyone has
a nice word for everyone
else and it doesn't
matter if you're on the
TV or not. I'm very happy
to be in the borough and
have no intention of
moving."
Su adds:
"You see some of the
families who grew up with
Hi-De-Hi! the first time
and they've got their own
families now, and they
are enjoying what their
mums did 25 years ago.
"It was
lovely to do work on
Hi-De-Hi! and do
something that was so
popular. In its heyday in
its Christmas special
edition it got an
audience of 26 million
people, which is just an
inconceivable figure
now."
Su signed up for
the line dancing
competition when she
returned from a holiday
in Australia following a
stint as booze-guzzling,
mean Miss Hannigan in a
touring production of
Annie.
"It's all
systems go now," she
says. "I've also got
a new series of Little
Robots with Lenny Henry
and Martin Clunes and a
fashion-shoot coming up
in New York.
"I love
being busy and I won't
close any doors but I'll
only do something if I
like the vibe and feel
the quality of the
work."
Su is also
planning to return to the
stage with a one-woman
show as she did in the
1980s. And she will not
rule out playing in her
very own Islington.
"You've
always got great venues
here like the Union
Chapel, it would be
great," said Su.
"It was so much fun
last time and I can't
wait to do it again.

April
7, 2005: Su in 2005? |
Su is
currently recording yet
another series of the
hugely popular children's
animation Little
Robots. She will,
once again, be voicing
the character of Noisy.
Also aboard again are
Lenny Henry and Martin
Clunes.
This year will see
serious work being
undertaken on Su's
resurrected
one-woman-show. Expect
updates on this exciting
project as and when Su
gives us confirmation.
The "working
title" is Lady In
Waiting.
Su will
soon be flying off to New
York for a fashion shoot.
There are
talks of overseas tours
of A Happy Medium, in
which Su starred earlier
in 2004, including a
visit to Australia. Su is
very keen to reprise her
role as Ellen Small:
"It was a great
vehicle for a female
performer and I was only
off stage for five
minutes - apart from the
interval! - for the whole
show. It was a marathon
but it was
marvellous.
