December 16, 2003: 'Snow White' - BBCi Review
Snow White - @ BBCiSnow White at the Hexagon in Reading is a good, old-fashioned panto - in the best sense of the world.

Our stage correspondent saw kids jumping up and down and adults giggling like loons - fantastic!

If you ever want to explain the peculiar British sense of camp fun to anyone, take them to a good pantomime. And if you want a good pantomime, you need the right cast: a children's TV presenter and Bouncer from Neighbours are not necessarily cut out for the job...

Su Pollard and Christopher Lillicrap, however, clearly are. It takes talent to be able to turn from a simpering cleaning maid to a thoroughly booable evil queen. Christopher Lillicrap has done a masterful job as writer, combining almost every single panto cliche you've paid good money to see into a couple of fun-packed hours. People who complain about the TV generation would have been amazed by the kids' ability to play along with set pieces like "it's behind you!", "oh no we're not!" and the rest.

There was of course all the usual excellent, heart-warming magic and fun (bunnies, the great cake-making scene, gratuitous dancing to pop songs). The older children were treated to that particular brand of eye-popping double entendre courtesy of Mr Lillicrap ("ooh, look at that saucy gentleman - Father Christmas has nothing on you..."), but one thing that seemed interesting was the choice of songs. The musical numbers were slick and entertaining - a rarity in regional panto - but some of the songs hailed from the '60s, '70s and '80s. All very appropriate and enjoyable, but some of the littler ones were getting slightly restless at that point. S Club's "Reach" was the exception and a real high moment, though.

It's hard to fault this production, and it goes highly recommended to any young people looking for fun, or anyone older who needs a smile putting on their face. Four and a half jellybabies out of five.

December 16, 2003: 'Snow White' - Su and Christopher onstage

Su is, of course, the Wicked Queen. Christopher, meanwhile, is Nurse Nora, as well as the scriptwriter of the panto that is taking Berkshire by storm!

But when  Scary is asleep, mischievous Flappy the Bat starts fiddling with the Rock-a-bye Rocker's control buttons. When she turns up the music and speeds up the rocking motion, Scary's slumber suddenly becomes a lot less peaceful!

December 6, 2003: 'IC Berkshire' - Snow White
It's Su!Hi--ho, hi--ho, it's off to work we go

Does the phrase 'skin as white as snow, hair as dark as night, lips as red as rose' ring any bells? No, I'm not talking about Michael Jackson but Snow White.

However you won't find this fairy tale character in your toddlers book collection but instead at The Hexagon Theatre Queen's Walk, Reading, as they embark on their first in-house production.

In association with the Proper Pantomime Company, Snow White is being billed as the most magical pantomime that has ever been seen in Reading.

The show promises to be a truly traditional pantomime with thrills, twists and treats for all the family.

Snow White is the ultimate tale of good verses evil. The story starts when the protagonist is forced to seek refuge with seven quirky dwarfs.

However plagued by jealousy the Wicked Queen tricks Snow White into taking a bite from a poisonous apple, which sends Snow White to her death bed. However as in all fairy tales, good always prevails and the dwarfs take the Handsome Prince to Snow White, where they kiss and live happily ever after.

Celebrity spotters should be pleased to note that the show will feature more star names than dwarfs in its cast.

Su Pollard, who is famed for her national tours with Annie and The Vagina Monologues, plays the wicked Queen. Other actors include Deborah Chapman as Snow White and Christopher Lillicrap as Nurse Nora.

However community spirit is high on the pantomime agenda as local schoolchildren will be featuring in the supporting roles.

Snow White: The Hexagon, Reading, from Saturday, December 6, 2003 until Sunday, January 4, 2004. Tickets: £8.50-£18.00. Times for the show may vary. Box office: 0118 960 6060.
