Hello
again campers! There'll be
sauce aplenty when Dale Winton reunites the Hi-De-Hi!
gang ...
Nostalgia,
celebs, tears and laughter... what more could you
want? Each morning this week, Dale Winton
presents Stars Reunited, hosting get-togethers
for the casts of five much-loved TV shows.
Of
course, being Dale, he'll want to know all the
behind-the-scenes gossip from each programme.
He'll also be asking the stars what they're been
up to now, finding out about their funniest and
most embarrassing memories, and surprising each
cast with a mystery guest.
All
Creatures Great And Small, Nationwide, Blue Peter
and Tomorrow's World all feature in the series,
but Tuesday's show should provide a saucy
highlight when Dale says a big, camp hello to the
stars of Hi-De-Hi!, the nostalgic Fifties-set
comedy that ran on screen from 1981 to 1988 and
followed the goings-on at Maplin's holiday camp.
We checked out the stars Dale will be meeting...
RUTH
MADOC: Played: Formidable but lovelorn
organiser Gladys Pugh, who greeted guests with
her trademark 'Hello Campers'.
After Hi-De-Hi!: TV roles have included
BBC drama Oliver's Travels and Jack Of Hearts and
she has been on stage in Pickwick: The Musical
and 42nd Street. In 2001, she played widow Mrs
Hans in the film Very Annie Mary. Lives in
Cambridgeshire with her second husband and has
two children.
She says: 'During Hi-De-Hi! my mother, a
hospital matron, made sure I didn't get
big-headed. She'd make me empty the bedpans
whenever she could!'
PAUL
SHANE: Played: Ted Bovis, the gruff,
beer-swilling comic with the teddy-boy quiff.
After Hi-De-Hi!: Comic roles in You Rang,
M'Lord? and Oh, Doctor Beeching!, which both
featured Su Pollard and Jeffrey Holland
(Hi-De-Hi's Spike). He has appeared in Holby
City, as Stan Ashleigh, and the 2002 movie
Heartlands. Paul lives in Rotherham. A father to
three daughters, his wife, Dory, died two years
ago.
He says: 'I look a lot different since I
played Ted - I've lost four stone. I've got a
one-pack now; It's not healthy to haul all that
weight about at my age.'
SU
POLLARD: PLayed: Peggy Ollerenshaw, the
downtrodden chalet maid who desperately wanted to
become a yellowcoat.
After Hi-De-Hi!: Played parlourmaid Ivy
Teasdale in You Rang, M'Lord? and ticket-clerk
Ethel in Oh, Doctor Beeching! She has done
stand-up comedy with The Su Pollard Show and has
appeared in countless pantos including Pinocchio
and Aladdin. Su's single and lives in north
London.
She says: 'Hi-De-Hi! made me - I've not
looked back since. Before I got the part I'd just
lost at Opportunity Knocks to a singing Jack
Russell!'
NIKKI
KELLY: Played: Sylvia, the gravel-voiced,
leggy blonds temptress with the shortest shorts
at Maplin's.
After Hi-De-Hi!: Mainly stage work - most
recently as the Wicked Witch in Wizard Of Oz and
Lady Honoria Dedlock in Dickens' Bleak House.
Also appeared as Janie in The Upper Hand. She's
currently working on a sci-fi film called
Messages. Nikki's single and lives in
Hertfordshire.
She says: 'Shorts weren't fashionable for
the Fifties setting of Hi-De-Hi! I just liked the
way they looked. Each year I let them get shorter
until they almost disappeared!'
