.Shields Gazette - Toyah Video Interview - Transcript
.Tuesday 21st July, 2009..............................................................Interview
A transcript of Toyah's short 'Shields Gazette' video interview from earlier this month.

Interviewer: Welcome to South Tyneside, how are you finding it?

Toyah: I think it's beautiful. I arrived last night and I texted the band, and I said 'it's absolutely gorgeous here'. I have played here before, two years ago, but I must have just come in, done the gig, and left! But I stayed the night, we went for a curry, had a walk along the beach. It was really, really cute.

Interviewer: You've got a big crowd here for you today as well. Do you still get nervous when you do performances?

Toyah: I do get nervous, yeah. Funnily enough, probably the smaller the crowd the more nervous I get, because they're usually much more intimate. I like big crowds. I really enjoy the atmosphere, and it's always a privilege to play in front of that many people. They think there's going to be over 10,000 today and that's exciting.

I believe in doing stuff that people know, so obviously there's my hits, and not everyone knows my hits, but we do a lot of cover versions as well because I want it to be a really lively event and I like that people can join in or get up and dance. So, with me it's always about energy, and playing songs that influenced my life. I like to do Alice Cooper's 'School's Out' because when I was at school that kept me going. I hated every minute of school, so to have a rock song about school was just great, so we put that in the set.

Interviewer: There's a lot of families out there as well.

Toyah: Well, it's a free festival and I love them because it means that you get such an incredibly eclectic mix of audience. Personally, I think we should have free festivals all over the country, all year round. It does allow people to experience music who, otherwise, think that a concert isn't for them. But it is eclectic, the first 50 feet of people is going to be sitting in deck chairs, and I've warned my band that this is going to be quite an unusual experience because we're used to a sea of faces, dancing, and rioting and stuff like that. There's going to be quite a sedate feeling from the immediate front row. It doesn't mean that we're sedate, we've got to get over their heads to reach the back.

It's a very interesting experience when you're playing to people, some are going to be in their 80's, 70's, as you've said, some will be their with their children. And there's going to be punks there. so you've got to encapsulate the whole experience and not leave anyone out.

Interviewer: So we're gonna get them rocking out their deckchairs this afternoon, are we?

Toyah: I hope so! I think you're gonna have a lot of people with sunstroke. We put in cover versions that I hope meet all the generational needs.

Interviewer: How much fun is it for you?

Toyah: It's great fun. It's astonishing fun, and it's a really privileged way to earn your living. You can't better it because it's a party atmosphere from beginning to end.

Interviewer: Do you still get the same old groupies you used to back in the day, or not?

Toyah: I wouldn't say the "groupies" but there's a lot of the old followers out there, yeah!

Another rediscovered gem, just added to Dreamscape Downloads: Toyah, interviewed in America in 1991, talks about Sunday All Over The World, 'Prostitute', 'Ophelia's Shadow', songwriting, America, love, Mr Fripp & more...

Interview courtesy of Joel Krutt, of WHUS, who spoke to Toyah and Robert in 1991:

"Many moons ago, I received a phone call from Fripp's management at the time of release of the "Sunday All Over The World" album asking if I'd do an interview with both Robert Fripp & Toyah Willcox.

I knew I'd be able to pull off the Fripp section of the interview, but I wasn't familiar with Toyah's work at all, so I spent the weekend before researching and getting my notes and questions together.

Toyah was very personable and gracious. It was a very enjoyable experience.
"

Please feel free to download this rare and interesting interview for your listening pleasure. Joel has, understandably, requested that this should NOT be used in any commercial way whatsoever. Thanks for co-operating with his request.

.South Shields Daily Photo - The Devil Queen in South Shields
.Friday 10th July, 2009...................................................................Pictures
This picture is mainly for the fans, many of whom have been arriving from one of the Toyah Willcox fans’ sites Dreamscape.

The former punk singer and lately actress was the headline act in a free concert at the Bents Park in South Shields last Sunday, and I pictured her as she opened her set with a fine rendition of Lenny Kravitz’s “Are you gonna go my way”, I was a little surprised at the choice but it worked very well as she quickly swung into Alice Cooper’s “School’s out”, it didn’t take her long to have the crowds swinging along and dancing in the rain.

Toyah will be back in the north-east later this year when South Shields’ fans of hers can see her performing as the Devil Queen in Steve Steinman’s “Vampires Rock” on 11th October at the Sunderland Empire.

NB: Thanks to
South Shields Daily Photo for namechecking and linking to Dreamscape.

• Toyah is mentioned in an article in today's Metro, in their "On The Stereo" column: Possessed of a classically trained voice that stuns at 10 paces, Katie Stelmanis creates simple songs shaped by strong piano lines and quirky noises that subtly grow into powerful harmonies. The Canadian singer/songwriter has all the drama of Kate Bush and Toyah Willcox, while her song Believe Me is a real corker.

Times Online mention this morning's repeat of Cash In The Celebrity Attic in their Game, set and match to televised sport online article.

• In a feature on Timothy Spall, Tiscali Europe namecheck Toyah. Timothy and Toyah both acted in Quadrophenia and The Tale Of Little Pig Robinson.

One last thought, Michael Jackson. God Bless Him!  When I saw Thriller for the first time my life changed forever. He set a standard that every artist has been influenced by, young, old, black, white.  But when I was a child in Birmingham……..The Jackson Five taught me about focus, dedication, humility, brotherhood, kindness and the power of belief.  God bless Michael and God bless the Jackson 5, it started long before Thriller.
