30, 2005: Toyah newsy bits &
pieces! |
Toyah is quoted
in a recent article at
www.spiked-online.com Body
politics: why are we obsessed
with our flesh?
The cultural fascination
with corpses, plastic surgery and
healthy living suggests we are
objectifying ourselves, by
Stephen Bowler
For
those less able or willing to
persuade their bank manager of
the merits of a 'designer vagina'
- the 'new nose job' apparently -
much the same forces fuel an even
larger industry than that of
cosmetic surgery. This is the
nutty Neverland of 'healthy
living', where policy and
prejudice find common cause
against anyone with a deviant
Body Mass Index.
The
BBC's Fat Nation, timed to
coincide with last year's
Department of Health jihad
against porky people, set the
tone by heaving fridges out on to
the street, where contents were
graded according to their moral
fibre. Following up from this is
the ongoing, online prescriptions
of the Big Challenge. This summer
the BBC developed much the same
format, with B-list celebrities
bingeing on their own bad faith
in order to answer the question,
Are You Younger Than You Think?
'For 30 years I've been
methodical in my diet and
exercise', declared Toyah Wilcox,
who hopes 'internally' to be '40
years old', a condition that will
no doubt delight her many fans.
Viewers are invited to assess the
value of their own internal
condition online.
The above quote is taken from the
BBC1 programme Are You Younger
Than You Think?, which aired
in July on the channel. Toyah's
segment can be viewed at the BBC
website:

was first shocked at her bright
orange hair in 1980.

19, 2005: Toyah newsy bits &
pieces! |
Toyah guested on
Johnnie Walker's BBC Radio 2 show
on Tuesday evening. It was a very
interesting little chat,
including tawk (as well as a spin
for 'I Want To Be Free') about
the new 'Safari Singles
Collection' 2 CD, her facelift,
'Live On The Lawn' last Friday in
Ayr (dunno who brought that topic
up ;o)) and oodles more. Listen
to it for yourself by hopping,
skipping, or even leaping on over
to the BBC Radio 2 website where
it is available for your ears for
a limited time.
You can also leap on over to
Toyah's Official website to enter
a super duper competition to win
advance 'The Safari Records
Singles Collection - Part 2' and
'Minx' CDs. A package anyone
would want popping through their
letter box.
Don't forget that Toyah is all
over the box at the moment. Shoestring,

19, 2005: Toyah is OK! |
Toyah
and John are pictured in the new
issue (with Big Brother's Anthony
on the cover) of OK! Magazine
(Issue 483 August 23 2005). They
were attending the recent opening
of Behind The Iron Mask, a
new musical starring Sheila
Ferguson.
Unfortunately,
according to various reports, the
venture has been something of a
failure and the musical will
close, after only a few weeks,
this weekend.
'The
Guardian' said: The producers of
a West End show snortingly
derided by critics yesterday have
bowed to the inevitable and
announced that it will close
later this month.
Behind
the Iron Mask, a three-actor
chamber musical based loosely on
The Man in the Iron Mask, had its
press night at the Duchess
Theatre on Tuesday.
"It's
so bad that it is merely
unendurable," wrote Charles
Spencer in the Daily Telegraph.
"There's no insane flourish
to its mediocrity, no sublimity
to its awfulness. It is just
relentlessly, agonisingly
third-rate." The cast, he
said, "perform as if they
have been on a prolonged Mogadon
bender".

16, 2005: Toyah newsy bits &
pieces! |
Kim Wilde
namechecked Toyah in an
interview, 'Brief Encounter', she
did with the Glasgow 'Evening
Times' last Thursday (11th
August): "Are
you looking forward to tomorrow's
gig at Culzean Castle?
I
haven't done an '80s concert for
a few months. I've worked with
Carol Decker and Toyah before, so
it should be great."
Toyah was mentioned in an
article, in 'The Independent'
(Sunday 14th August), on Robert
Fripp's solo appearance at The
Big Chill festival:
"On
Sunday afternoon, the guitarist
Robert Fripp (leader of King
Crimson; prog-rock polymath,
hubby to Toyah) played a low-key
solo show in which his delicate
washes of guitar atmospherics
created, through the addition of
digital effects, the sound of a
full orchestra."

11, 2005: August is MINX Month!!! |
It's
Official!!! (Weeelll.... actually
it isn't, though it maybe could
be in another dimension, another
time, place, or space between the
sound?!) August is the month of
MINX! Was it
really 20, yep 20!, years ago
that Toyah swooned her way to CBS
Records and released the
mega-polished MINX? The album
went on sale exactly 20 years ago
this month. No one could have
predicted the look Toyah adopted
for her "all grown up"
album. Hair by Smile, clothes by
Issey Miyake, photography by
Terence Donovan. It was sleekness
personified!
Toyah
was looking extremely fit,
tanned, toned and incredibly
sexy, expecially in the
"second skin" black
rubber dress she wore for the
first single from MINX, 'Don't
Fall In Love (I Said)'. The
entire theme was of expense and
sophistication, far removed from
the punkette Toyah of earlier
albums and images, and in
interviews Toyah talked about
growing up, becoming a woman,
moving on...
No
less than 14 musicians worked on
the album, which was produced by
Christopher Neil. This was the
first Toyah release to be made
available simultaneously on CD
too, albeit with two extra songs.
And the first where Toyah mostly
sang other people's compositions,
though she did contribute some
self-penned songs too. Standout
tracks included 'I'll Serve You
Well', 'Sympathy', 'Space Between
The Sounds', 'America For
Beginners' and 'Don't Fall In
Love (I Said)'. Another was the
b-side 'Snow Covers The Kiss'
from the MINX recording sessions
(which is included on the 2005 CD
reissue).
Promotion
for MINX, and the three singles
taken from it, was intense and
Toyah seemed to be everywhere in
1985. Television appearances
included; Wogan, Razzmatazz,
Pebble Mill (twice), The
Kenny Everret Show, The
Saturday Picture Show, Stardate
AM, Wide Awake Club, Roland
Rat, Pop Watch, Sky
Trax, No. 73, TVAM,
and Pop Around. In Europe
Toyah guested on Musik Convoy,
Goldene Eins and Formel
Eins, in which Toyah
performed 'Don't Fall In Love' in
that famous rubber black dress.
So,
in a way, August IS the month of
MINX. Many thanks to Andrew York
for the beautiful MINX era
pictures.

And
GOOD LUCK to Toyah! Have a good

now been confirmed that Toyah's

Wolverhampton, taking place in
mid-September, the 16th to be
precise, will be filmed for a
future DVD release by Cherry Red

the early Eighties.
The

concert bars, 700 capacity, plus

11, 2005: A rocking, shocking DVD
- Three Of A Kind |
The
first two series of the Eighties
comedy sketch show Three Of A
Kind are being released on
DVD. Toyah is
linked to Three Of A Kind,
through a few (three I think)
hilarious impersonations by
Tracey Ullman. No doubt these
will be included on these DVD's.
Toyah also guested on the show,
in 1982, performing 'Street
Creature' with the band, as well
as appearing in a sketch with
Lenny Henry. David Copperfield,
whose 1987 show Lift Off Toyah
guested on singing 'Echo Beach',
made up the trio.
Series
One is released this coming
Monday (15th August), with Series
Two following on the 10th October
2005.

jewels, she was on T.V. the next
night wearing a huge ring that
shed only just had from
me
I was so excited! Myself
and Toyah have since become close
friends, and she has introduced
me to many more celebrity
