Cash In
The Attic - PJ Crook's 'Angel in
the Garden' |
Sunday 24th
February, 2008......................................................Television |
This
fantastic painting, 'Angel in the
Garden' created by artist PJ
Crook, is one of the lots Toyah
is offering up for auction on
Tuesday.
This is
what PJ Crook says: "A
couple of weeks ago I was
approached by Toyah and BBC1
'Cash in the Attic' programme to
see if I might donate a small
painting for them to auction for
the charity Macmillan Nurses
Cancer Care.
So I
have created this work, ANGEL IN
THE GARDEN which measures 8 x 10
inches, especially for the
programme. This size usually
sells for about £1,500.
The
auction will take place at
Chiswick Auction Rooms on
Tuesday, February 26th starting
at 12 noon and the television
programme will go out in May.
At
the request of the director, I am
sending the image out to people I
think might be interested in both
the painting and the cause.
Potential
buyers could attend and take part
in this exciting filmed auction
or alternatively can place bids
by telephone in advance (before
the end of Monday 25th), or bid
via telephone during the auction,
you should find this relatively
painless; the staff are used to
handling both these kinds of bids
if interested parties cannot
attend in person.
All
bidders should simply phone up,
and the staff will fill out all
the necessary paper work."

Lincolnshire
Echo - Toyah Willcox |
Sunday 17th
February, 2008....................................................Press Clips |
Her
jet set lifestyle takes her all
over the world but Toyah Willcox
regularly returns to Lincoln
because of family connections. "My
great-grandfather about five
times removed was the last man to
be hanged in Lincolnshire so I
have quite a connection with the
county," says Toyah.
"Lincoln
is a very rich cultural city and
I really enjoy the architecture
and the character there."
This time
round Toyah will be performing at
Gainsborough's new venue, The
State Club, where the spotlight
has previously been shined on
superstar DJs such as Judge Jules
and Lisa Lashes.
But, as
ever, Toyah is not intimidated by
the list of predecessors.
"My
website gets a few thousand hits
every week so people do know I'm
coming to Lincoln," says
Toyah.
"I do
what I do, I'll be playing for
the fans.
"I'm
not trying to attract a new
audience."
Having
said that, Toyah believes anyone
who attends who is not familiar
with her music will be easily won
over.
"You
get used to playing for crowds
that don't expect what you
do," says Toyah. "What
we do is a high energy rock show.
Our aim is to raise the
temperature and we always win
people over in the end."
Toyah
takes the same approach to her
writing as she does to her shows.
She believes that staying
contemporary doesn't have to take
effort.
"When
I write I don't think I'm writing
for young people," says
Toyah. "But I live a very
exciting life and my finger is on
the pulse musically, so I stay
contemporary."

Derek
Jarman: Curated by Isaac Julien |
Tuesday 12th
February, 2008..........................................................Events |
'Derek', a
new film about Derek Jarman by
his friend and filmmaker Isaac
Julien and narrated by Tilda
Swinton, premieres at the
Serpentine and on More4 this
month.
Through
the docu-film Julien gives us a
unique insider's insight into the
highly respected British
filmmaker who died in 1994 of an
AIDS-related illness.
Accompanying the biopic film is
an exhibition of Jarman's
paintings and Super-8 films
curated by Julien.
Those who
remember flares from the first
time round won't want to miss
Jarman's iconic films including
'Jubilee' (1977), probably his
best known Super-8 co-starring
Adam Ant, Toyah Willcox and
Jordan with cameos from Siouxsie
and the Banshees and The Slits. A
landmark punk era classic. Ten
years later, Jarman made
'Caravaggio' which picked up on
the same theme as his earlier
film, 'Sebastiane' (1976) in its
focus on how "man's
character is his fate".

Toyah
is included in a three-page
feature, on the new BBC1 drama Ashes
To Ashes, in this week's
'Radio Times' magazine (9th -
15th February 2008).
The main
feature is titled "Stand And
Deliver", Toyah is quoted in
an accompanying one-page article.
Karma
Chameleons: Their names were
definitely on the list - the
Blitz Kids recall the club's door
policy and gender-bending scene.
Toyah
Willcox: 80s pop star;
broadcaster and actress:
Toyah
opened her warehouse, Mayhem, for
Blitz pre-parties. "Having
come from punk, where women
really reinvented how we were
treated, what was wonderful about
the new romantic movement was
that it wasn't sexist atall. It
was slightly kind of
'Bloomsbury', in that it
reinvented people's sexuality.
People became very open about
homosexuality, bisexuality, and
tried to redefine everything.
Everyone was an individual, but
also very stylish. And because
the boys were so feminine, it
empowered the women as
well."
Steve
Strange, Rusty Egan, Boy George,
Robert Elms and Midge Ure are
also interviewed.
