Toyah
was interviewed in the early
August issue of 'Venue' magazine,
Bristol and Bath's What's On
Guide to the area.
Since
the age of seven, when I saw
the Sound of Music about six
times in a row, I just knew show
business was the job for me. Even
now I still have a rebellious
streak, I dont feel like
Im a conformist at all. I
think Ive always bucked the
trend. I was one of the first
people to be singing and acting
and have two completely separate
careers. Now thats bog
standard. When I started thirty
years ago celebrity didnt
exist the way it does now, today
its big business. Im
not scared of celebrity but I
never expected it to become a
worldwide industry.
I like
new challenges, if something
is difficult I really like it. It
means your breaking your own
habits. There are times when
thing are difficult. The hardest
thing I have ever done is having
to film on a busy street like
Oxford Street in London. People
always want to know what
youre doing and you
cant be left alone to get
on with it. Every job has its own
difficulties but I enjoy that.
Im still striving to
achieve, for me once something is
done its gone and forgotten.
Its history. In many ways
Im still trying to achieve
the impossible dream.
I
didnt enjoy Im a
celebrity get me out of here,
it was actually incredibly hard.
They starve you, they play
psychological games with you and
no-one ever mentions that its
freezing cold. You go out and
think you are going to have a
lovely time in the sunshine and
the reality is horrible. Leeches
are prolific in the jungle and
they are attracted to body heat.
When we were talking a clump of
leaves would move towards us and
it would be leeches. Really
spooky. But despite being smelly
and dirty I realised this is the
nature of the beast and celebrity
telly is part of what I do.
I
believe firmly that everybody has
a right to work, regardless
of age. I came into the business
never expecting to retire and I
still feel the same way. Pure
pigheadedness keeps me going, I
think Im going to fight
ageism all the way. I have worked
with brilliant people in their
late seventies like Catherine
Hepburn, the legendary Hollywood
actress. Its people like
her that inspire me to keep
going. Im still enjoying
myself and I feel I have a right
to keep working until that
changes.
The
most successful things are the
simplest things. If you told
me last year I would be doing a
44 date tour wearing big teeth I
would have gone mad!
Vampires Rock
has been around for a couple of
years and its building a
huge following. The audience come
along wanting to be part of the
show, and it doesnt
disappoint. It has more
pyrotechnics than the Olympic
games! Its got humour, its
fun and it has really great
music. I initially said yes
because I wanted to enjoy myself,
but since then its taken on
a life of its own and I really
respect the fact its a high
quality show. This is what
theatre does, its about
enjoyment, and this is no
exception.
There
is a lot of people out there
who really romanticise about
being vampires, and thats
what this is about. The audience
can expect a rocky horror-esque
atmosphere, and lots of comedy.
The story is slightly sexist but
its all tongue in cheek
or tooth in cheek! I think
the audience needs to come along
and enjoy the fetishism of being
a vampire. I play the Devil Queen
and will I be using a lot of my
potential for wifely tantrums and
seduction. I have definitely been
typecast for the role and
Im not afraid to say it.
Interview

Punk
legend Toyah Willcox will be
first on stage strutting her
signature vampy style for the
Here and Now 80s concert at the
ExCeL.
"I'll
be wearing a pair of four-inch
heeled thigh boots that come
right up to my bum," the
eccentric pop star and actress
told The Docklands.
Never one
to be shy of a crowd, Toyah is
part of a bill that includes
Bananarama, Belinda Carlisle,
Paul Young and Midge Ure on July
27 for the British International
Motor Show.
She said:
"I love all their music -
the best thing is that we're all
quite diverse. You couldn't get a
more eclectic mix."
Toyah
emerged as a rebellious punk
figure in the late 70s and had UK
hits including It's a
Mystery.
More
recently she's had a successful
acting career playing Billie
Piper's mum in ITV's Secret Diary
of a Call Girl, as well as
appearances in I'm a
Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here
and Living with the Dead.
Toyah
first visited the Docklands area
in 1979, filming Jubilee with
Adam Ant and cult art figure
Derek Jarman.
"We
filmed on the back streets around
Butlers Wharf," she said.
"We were a gang of punk
rockers and at lunch would all
pile into proper old East End pie
and mash shops - the locals
thought aliens had landed!
"Back
then, the area was undiscovered.
All you could smell was hops and
barley from the breweries. Lots
of artists were taking over the
warehouses - it was very
exciting."
Toyah has
been part of the worldwide Here
and Now tour for five years.
"They just keep getting
bigger and the audiences are
getting younger - I love doing
it," she said.
Former
EastEnders actress Michelle Gayle
and ex-Coronation Street star
Sherrie Hewson will be joined by
Vanessa Feltz, Toyah Willcox,
Aggie MacKenzie, Jennie Bond and
Derek Hatton for the new show,
which is set to air in September.
Each
contestant will be filmed on
location showcasing their homes
and their local towns. The
filming will then move to a
studio and the first competitive
heat will see all the celebrities
cooking against each other.
The
programme will hit television
screens in September.

Time
Out magazine recently celebrated
40 years since first being
published. In an article in The

stars, was mentioned.
And so
it went on, measured out in Time

through punk and clubbing,
'loadsamoney' and Ken
Livingstone, New Labour, Princess
Diana and Facebook. Gay
liberation in the Seventies was
marked by a giant pink triangle
on the front page and the
headline: 'A mark of oppression
becomes a badge of pride.' Toyah
Willcox, red hair spiking out in
all directions, was hailed as one
of 'pop's new mini moguls' in
1982. Arnold Schwarzenegger,
muscles rippling, stared out from
the cover 20 years ago in August
1988. The face of Kate Moss
dominated the London Fashion Week
special of 2001. The Valentine's
special of 2003, published on the
eve of the invasion of Iraq,
urged: 'Make love not war'.

Hello!
- Toyah 'having the time of her
life' on Eighties nostalgia tour
Toyah
Willcox seemed to have cheated
time when she performed at an
Eighties revival gig over the
weekend. The punk queen once
famed for her outrageous outfits
and hits such as Echo Beach was a
ball of energy at the 'Here And
Now' concert in London.
During the
show - which also featured Paul
Young and Heaven Is A Place On
Earth star Belinda Carlisle -
Toyah pogo-danced and sang her
way through songs from her
30-year career plus covers
including Guns N' Roses classic
Sweet Child O' Mine.
The
singer, who's now 50 and enjoys a
fortune established selling
stocks and property, has mellowed
somewhat. On occasion she's been
known to tell audiences:
"Don't worry, I'm going to
behave myself there are
children here I
realise."
That
doesn't stop the former rebel
"having the best time of my
life" on this summer's
special tour.

In
a recent interview with Scottish
newspaper 'The Herald' (24th
July) Limahl was very
complimentary about Toyah:
Limahl, who is
appearing at Retrofest with the
recently reformed Kajagoogoo,
cites Toyah Willcox as a style
icon. "Everything was more
colourful in the eighties. Punk
had been dirty, painful pins,
anarchy and almost no melody,
which for me was a no-go because
I love melody. The eighties get a
bad rap but I'm not sure it's
justified.
"We live in
an era now where pop feels like
one culture. All the big record
companies will have style gurus.
We didn't have that kind of help
back then, so people were very
individual and you had great
images of people experimenting
with make-up and hair, like the
Eurythmics and Soft Cell."
Toyah
was recently namechecked in this 'Times' feature on
Laura Marks, the Scottish TV
presenter and member of El
Presidente, who was a regular in Barmy
Aunt Boomerang with Toyah in
both series of the show in
1999/2000. Both Laura and Richard
Madden, the two child leads in Barmy
Aunt Boomerang, have gone
onto have successful adult
careers in music/presenting and
acting.
Toyah
was mentioned in 'Portsmouth
News' (18th July) here, and 'Shropshire
Star' (19th July) here. She also was
namechecked in a 'Guardian'
article here on Melody Klyman on
21st July.
'Norwich
Evening News' (24th July) mention
Toyah in another Vampires Rock
news article here. The 'Exeter
Express & Echo' (27th July)
namecheck her here, and again here on 28th July.
'North East Gazette'
report:
'North
East Gazette' on 31st July
reported:
Speaking of the
darker side, VAMPIRES ROCK,
headlined by Toyah Willcox, is a
musical show with real bite.
Playing on November 28, its
packed with rock anthems,
including Bat Out Of Hell, Sweet
Child Of Mine and Total Eclipse
Of The Heart.
Willcox
blames BBC for her missing out on
Ashes To Ashes success
Singer
Toyah Willcox claims a BBC
bureaucratic bungle denied her
the chance to feature in a hit TV
series.
She says
she discovered by accident that
the Beeb wanted to use at least
one of her hits in the 1980s-set
BBC1 drama Ashes To Ashes,
starring Keeley Hawes and Philip
Glenister.
But the
chance passed her by because the
BBC did not know who to ask for
the rights to license her music.
Toyah is
fuming because her record company
is owned by the BBC!
The
Birmingham-born former punk star,
who now lives in Pershore,
Worcestershire, says: Its
astonishing. The BBC, or at least
that department, is run by
idiots.
Someone
sent me, too late, a copy of an
e-mail that was sent by the BBC
to Virgin asking to use my music
on Ashes To Ashes and the
soundtrack album.
Im not
with Virgin! Its easy enough to
track me down, especially as the
BBC actually part-own 2Entertain,
the record company who has
reissued four of my albums and
released two compilations,
including my new album Good
Morning Universe.
Come on
guys, use your brain power! Its
really frustrating and an
indication of how the modern
world works. The left hand of the
BBC doesnt know what the right
hand is doing.
I hope the
person responsible has been moved
on to another job, preferably
making the tea.
Toyah, who
turned 50 this year, will be
performing her old hits like Its
A Mystery and I Want To Be Free
on August 1 at the Shugborough
Music and Fireworks event in
Staffordshire.
The
entertainer has just returned
from a two-week walk across China
with Olivia Newton-John and
Dannii Minogue to raise money for
a new cancer centre.
Toyah is
used to people doing double-takes
when they spot her, but she wasnt
prepared for the reaction she
received when meeting a Mongolian
tribe.
She said:
We were in the middle of the Gobi
desert when we met these
Mongolians, who had never seen a
white person before. They were
just amazed. It was one of the
loveliest moments I have ever
experienced.
I loved
China, there were no gangs,
alcoholism or homeless people,
everyone seemed happy and looked
after. But its certainly not
without its problems.
The
pollution is staggering and
caused my nose to bleed every
day.
We saw two
instances of the police beating
men up in the street. They pulled
a man off his bicycle and
attacked him but no-one batted an
eyelid at the police publicly
humiliating someone. And they
simply cannot fathom why we value
the rights of Tibetans.
The autumn
brings an appearance as Billie
Pipers mother in the second
series of ITVs The Secret Diary
Of A Call Girl, and then a tour
of the musical Vampires Rock
which comes to Birminghams
Alexandra Theatre and the
Wolverhampton Civic Hall in
October.
Toyah
plays the Devil Queen, complete
with vampire fangs.
It has a
cult following, its the new Rocky
Horror Show, says Toyah, who has
been married for 22 years to
guitarist Robert Fripp.
I wear
very dramatic glam rock costumes
and devils horns. Its not the
easiest thing speaking and
singing with vampire teeth, but
they are quite sexy. I will have
lots of fun terrorising Robert
with them!
A BBC
spokeswoman said: We are not
aware of any communication
problem.
At the
start of the series, general
inquiries were made with many
record companies before decisions
were made about which tracks to
use.
There was
only room for a certain amount of
songs, but for the second series
we are happy to look at
opportunities to feature Toyah.
Ripon
Gazette - Centre show set to have
audience rocking in the aisles
Vampires
Rock, a show like no other, comes
to Harrogate International Centre
later this year.
A twist of
rock, a hint of musical theatre
and jam packed with great rock
anthems, you can catch the show
when it flies into Harrogate on
Saturday, October 25.
Set in New
York in the year 2030, the undead
are livelier than ever,
especially in club Live and
Let Die, where Baron Von
Rockula, played by Steve
Steinman, and The Devil Queen,
his long-suffering wife, played
by Toyah Willcox, reside.
Toyah
says: My husband, the
baron, is on the look-out for a
new bride, but not if I have
anything to do with it! I would
say over my dead
body, but then Im
already dead, arent
I?!
The new
bride in question is innocent,
aspiring singer, Pandora, (Emily
Clark), who stumbles across the
club in need of a job.
Cue a host
of classic rock, played live by
the barons hand-picked
band, The Lost Boys, and a hint
of comedy, as the baron and his
sidekick, Stringfellow (Mike
Taylor), attempt to convince
Pandora to lose her soul to rock
and roll!
With songs
made famous by the likes of
AC/DC, Guns N Roses, Bon
Jovi, Meat Loaf, Joan Jett, Suzi
Quatro, Queen and many more,
audiences should be rocking in
the aisles.
Tickets
cost £24 and £18.50, with early
bird booking offer of £3
discount on top-priced tickets.
