Colin..........................Interview
Toyah was
interviewed recently (30th Nov
2009) by, the rather excellent,
'Glasgow University Guardian':
Oisín Kealy checks in with
punk pioneer Toyah Willcox
Does it feel like thirty
years since Its a Mystery?
No, because I performed it six
weeks ago to thirty thousand
people, its remained
completely constant. I dont
really think back, Ive got
too much going on. I feel
absolutely no connection to the
eighties at all. That said, I
think its because for me
Ive never stepped away from
that music, Ive always
performed it. So Im more in
touch with the music than with
the actual eighties. For instance
Im not very fond about
shoulder pads coming back in!
Do you think you retained
your punk spirit as you grew
older?
I dont think I ever grew
out of the punk ethos. It was
absolutely remarkable being
there. It was the first time
where I saw that race didnt
matter, disability didnt
matter, sexual orientation
didnt matter, and if you
had a good idea, you had ears
that listened to it. It was the
most all-encompassing thing that
Ive ever come across.
Its probably the most
rewarding movement Ive
lived through and Im 51. I
never thought Id be alive,
I thought I wouldnt survive
past thirty. I knew that I could
never have family because
Id rather have glass
inserted under my skin, and I
knew I would never stop working.
In a way Ive kept to that
but I never conceived what it
would be like to hit fifty. I
think thats because the
media ignores the power of each
decade, and I feel very critical
about that. I never believed that
there would be value beyond
thirty, and there is incredible
value. Ive moved away from
my roots very obviously
Ive presented the Good Sex
Guide live, Ive presented
Songs of Praise, I do pantomime,
but at the same time Im
working with Bill Rieflin and
Robert Fripp, who are both
legends. So I feel very lucky in
that Ive never been trapped
by any particular type of genre.

Back in the
day... before the interweb
hijacked our lives... there were
fanzines! One of the best was
'Tellurian' (running circa 1986
to 1997), the only way to get
your reliable Toyah news for many
years. A couple of examples of
the wonderfulness of 'Tellurian'
are included in The Toyah Willcox

'Tellurian' was the

.The Humans
Live 2010 - DGM News -
The Humans Competition
DGM News are
currently running a competition
with the prize of 'We Are The
Humans', plus the spiffingly rare
CD version of 'These Boots Are
Made For Walkin':
When did Robert
Fripp last play a non-soundscape
/ King Crimson gig in the UK? If
you know the answer to this
head-scratcher you could win a
copy of The Humans album, We Are
The Humans, and a CD copy of
their cover of These Boots Are
Made For Walking featuring RF on
guitar.
As Robert prepares for his guest
slot as part of The Humans
gigs next month in Leamington
Spa, Cambridge and London we
wondered when he last appeared on
a UK stage where he wasnt
soundscaping, Crimsonising,
Craftyising or even RFSQing!
So the question is
this: when did Robert last play
in the UK where he wasn't
soundscaping? Providing the name
of the group gets you The Humans
booty for your trouble.
All you need to do is send an
email with the answer to competitions@dgmlive.com with HUMANS in the
subject header and well
announce the lucky winner on
Tuesday 2nd February.
NB:
John Young has just been
announced as support for The
Humans on all of their
forthcoming live dates. Visit the
John Young MySpace here.
DSD, aka
Die Shellsuit Die, reviewed 'We
Are The Humans' at the end of
2009:
It would appear we
have the President of Estonia to
thank for the existence of this
band - or perhaps it should be
Robert Fripp, who declined the
Presidential invitation to tour
the country, thus galvanising his
hard-working wife, Toyah Willcox.
Whoever deserves the gratitude;
let us not bow down too far, too
soon - although by no means a
poor effort, this debut album is
far from exemplary. Plenty of it
is self-indulgent, bass-heavy
dribble, with la Willcox
oh-so-serious tones singing of
who-knows-what around the sides.
Quicksilver is a genuine score,
however, with Labyrinth a close
contender. Both capture a genuine
sense of other-ness without
seeming as arch as the other
tracks. I sense that without the
big names, this would not stand
up for long on its musical merits
but who knows where the band may
go next? At least it isnt
more turgid identi-pop.
Local Secrets,
"the lively guide to
everything local", are
offering visitors to their
website the opportunity to win
two tickets to see The Humans
live at The Junction in Cambridge
on 23rd February.
Enter the competition at their
website here. There's no closing
date but they say they will
inform the winner on 31st
January.
Goodbye Pebble
Mill, the BBC1 special
presented by Toyah and originally
aired in February 2004, is now
available to view, in three
parts, at YouTube.
..
Toyah Willcox looks
back at more than three decades
of broadcasting from BBC Pebble
Mill. From the Archers to the
Clothes Show and from Top Gear to
Good Morning with Anne and Nick,
Pebble Mill has been turning out
TV and radio hits since the early
1970s. Cliff Richard, Warren
Clarke, Anne Diamond and a host
of other celebrities pay tribute
to The Mill as it prepares to
close its doors for the last

Coming
to Dreamscape this week... finally... no,
really.... yes, really, really...
our exclusive interview with
Toyah fan, friend, PA and cameo
star of last year's stupendously
Humans-tastic 'Bootz' video - our
good buddy John Wain!!
Last night was the
first date for Vampires Rock
2010, playing at Dunstable's
Grove Theatre. There are another
nine dates of the show for Toyah
between now and 12th Feb.
Toyah isn't taking
part in the Autumn 2010 tour but
these forthcoming dates aren't
the last for the Devil Queen.
It's been announced that Toyah
will play at the Vampires
Rock show date at the Rock
& Bike Festival, Derbyshire
on Saturday 17th July 2010.
Vampires Rock plays
Barnstaple's Queen's Theatre
tonight and tomorrow night.
The 'BRITs'
are celebrating their 30th
anniversary this year (the first
awards took place in 1977!!), and
they have a shiny new website
with lots of content to view.
Toyah is included, via a great
photo from the 1985 event, and as
a nominee in 1982 - '84, when it
was the 'British Record Industry
Awards'/'BPI Awards'.
NB:
There's always been some
confusion regarding the origins
of the 'BRITs' and the
"History Timeline" at
the new site seems to confirm
that they derived from the
'British Record Industry Awards'
(not televised - industry only -
Grosvenor House Hotel, London)
rather than the 'British Rock
& Pop Awards' (televised,
with band perfomances - Lyceum,
London) . Toyah won Best Female
1981 at the latter (held in early
1982). The photo of Toyah and
Paul Young is from 1985, when
they were known as the 'BPI'
Awards.

Rounding
off our Review Of The Year - We
will all have our own favourites,
and this is Dreamscape's Top Ten
Toyah Moments of 2009. Thanks to
everyone who contributed Toyah
news or info to the site over the
last 12 months.

2010
has some great things in store
for me and my shows. We kick off
the year with Toyah at The Grove
Theatre in Dunstable and we
finish the run at The Octagon
Theatre in Yeovil on the 12th
February. Vampires Rock will be
back in September for the new
tour but Im afraid to say
without Toyah as The Devil Queen.
It has been an amazing time
performing with Toyah, and she
really has taken well to the
show, but I can say it wont
be the last time you see her in
the show. Im hoping for
some new celebrity guest
appearances but will let you know
as they confirm.
Last night saw a
special secret performance of Snow
White & The Seven Dwarfs
take place at the Sheffield
Lyceum.
This was the final
show of Toyahs 2009 panto.
Due to popular
demand, were adding an
extra performance of Snow White
and the Seven Dwarfs. But this
version of our spectacular
pantomime will have a unique
difference you will be
part of the show!
In this final
performance the tables are
turned, with the audience given a
starring role and all the jokes
being directed at the stage.
Better still, the cast
arent in on the joke, so
they wont know what to
expect.

.The Star -
Where There's A Willcox There's A
Way...
A new Toyah
interview, published by Yorkshire
based 'The Star' on New Year's
Eve:
If Toyah Willcox made a
new year resolution in 2009 to be
a queen she got her wish granted
twice
And she begins next year as she
finishes this one, beneath a
brash crown as the Wicked Queen
in Sheffield's biggest panto,
Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs.
"I love it. I haven't
stopped laughing. My voice is
tired from laughing," says
the '80s pop-star- turned-actress
of her regal role.
"Playing the Queen means
that no matter what mood I'm in,
whether I decide to play her
sweetly, play her nastily, or
predictably, it works because the
audience knows she's bad which
means no matter what I give them
they will see me as a bad
person."
While being in panto right up
until Christmas Eve meant a mad
dash back to her home in
Worcestershire to be with family,
Toyah is enjoying working in one
of the country's most
"remarkable, versatile,
quickly- changing cities."
Her character is in stark
contrast to some of her previous
roles in the likes of British
comedy film The Power Of Three
and Secret Diary Of A Call Girl,
in which she played Billie
Piper's mother.
When Snow White concludes at The
Lyceum Theatre on January 10 she
will return to her Devil Queen
spot in the touring theatre
musical Vampires Rock.
Toyah is still making and
performing music of her own,
under her name and with her band
The Humans, which features Bill
Rieflin from REM and her husband
Robert Fripp, formerly of the
iconic band King Crimson. They
released an album late summer
while Toyah's put out In The
Court Of The Crimson Queen, a
tongue-in-cheek reference to
Fripp's album In The Court Of The
Crimson King.
